You were fine up until this segment.

Range is a major factor in one's technical skill, along with power, phrasing, control, versatility, and stamina. It would be one of the Four Horsemen if the Four Horsemen numbered six.

What I think you meant was "range is irrelevant when discussing technical skill if it is not applied properly." And even then, that's iffy.

Well said, Gid.

Well, the thesis behind that was range is nothing without control.

I will concede that I am wrong in stating that it is irrelevant [completely], but, as I stated, you can have Steve Perry's range and virtually no control. Range is thereby reduced to irrelevance.

I didn't see it (because eff Idol) but judging from your post (as much as I love RHPS)...

...FUCK NO.

People burn in hades for blaspheming the great Johnny Cash.

If you saw it you would probably like it. Johnny knows what being a unique artist is all about. I highly doubt he would be offended.

Okay, here it is:

What do you think? Did it make Johnny turn over in his grave?

Will he be the next David Bowie?

This is one area that they can't argue. He may win it all.

Btw, Kris Allen did a great job with Garth Brooks. He took that song and totally avoided the country theme. He turned it into a pop ballad. As SC said, it was 'terrific'!

I agree, I really liked his stripped down version of the song.

Again, he sounds pitchy when not singing in falsetto partially because he is singing it outside of its normal range.

I think he may become one of the most unique entertainers of this era if he doesn't self-destruct first. He may be gay/bi or whatever, but he is wild, stirs controversy and drama, and sings great. He's original enough to be the Curt Cobain of the 2010's.

Are you trying to insult the man?

Granted, I detest AI, so I have no idea who you're talking about, but I was never impressed with Curt Cobain. If the public had its way, Curt Cobain would be a far greater singer than Perry, a far greater guitarist than Schon, and a far greater songwriter than Cain, Perry, and Schon combined.

Overrated.

LOL - I'm just saying that Cobain was unique. I wasn't one of his fans though. Rock and roll needs more unique artists. Too many are stuck in a rut and it all sounds the same. His performance tonight shows that he will probably be way outside the box - which is cool to me. That way you don't just get the same old karaoke every week.

The difference is Cobain couldn't sing, he SUCKED. Lambert has Cobain's quirkiness, but with a great voice!

I LIKED ADAMS PERFORMANCE! (I think) :? . It really was different. It kinda made you think. Adam is a bit of a throw-back rocker, not at all like the current batch of cookie-cutter Nickleback/Daughtry/David Cook growlers. He may need to polish that falsetto a bit, but I like it - theatrics and all.

Additionally, I like country music week. Undoubtedly most of the AI contestants aren't terribly familiar with the genre, but, that's part of being a professional. When people say a contestant "can sing anything", well, let's just put that to the test. Most fail. There's nothing wrong with country music, it's very rich and diverse (contrary to popular belief) and country music, in my opinion, is one of the last bastions of great lyrics and story-telling. It should be an excellent showcase for vocalists, if they would avail themselves.

Understandable, Voyager. I make room for Cobain's innovation and unique qualities. The man had to have had a great deal of talent, given the amount of respect he maintains (though I suspect part of it can be attributed to his death, much like the late Heath Ledger or Freddie Mercury). I just wasn't a fan of his voice. Or his music.

You have committed the ultimate sin, however, by comparing Cobain with a decent singer. You shall be punished.

Just saw Adam's "ring of fire"....I freakin' liked it! It was mesmerizing and he definitely can sing. Why the heck did the judges, except RJ, think it was weird? If this guy sang twang it would've really sucked.

I don't watch much AI but my parents HAD to show me Adam's performance tonight after I got home from my chick's place.

And good god almighty, that was SICK. Adam rules.

Before I even heard the judges' comments, I swear to you, I said to them, "This sounds like the half-breed child of Trent Reznor and Robert Plant."

so amazing.

I like that description. I shall now describe him in those terms, only adding "with an emo hair cut." Image

Get the guy into musicals immediately.
I still think he has a great future in that field.

And I liked his version of Ring Of Fire.
Country is obviously not his genre so rather than make a fool of himself trying to sing a country song in the usual style, he twisted it and made it into a rock opera.
I love the guy.

And I adore that haircut.

I thought what he did with his voice was pretty cool. Seemed to be able to do whatever he wanted with it. I wasn't wild about the song. I like that whole Middle Eastern/Zep/Beatles vibe, but I didn't think it worked with that song.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

I think musicals/Rock Opera would be his calling, too...but, I'd seriously buy his music if he did what he did on 'Ring of Fire'. I'm reminded of when Daughtry did his take on Johnny Cash and it was a wow moment!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0VhxGshUdrY
Same with David Cook when he turned "Billie Jean" into his own. These guys know what works for them and put their own flavor to a song that takes it to another level. They stick to their convictions. I hope Adam does, too 'cuz if he lets the judges opinion sway him it will be diluted and boring.

I only watched the show from the season with Melinda Doolittle.
And she was the only one who blew me away. I adored her version of "My Funny Valentine" - that low note she hit was pure beauty.
So I don't really know anything about the other guys you are all discussing.

Any suggestions of the best you tube clips to take a peek at, please?

Here's my favourite .........at 1.16/17/18 that low note! WOW!
