This was never intended to be about Journey at all. They were just the nostalgia act supporting Rascal Flatts, and both were riding the coat tails of DSB's recent resurgence. That's all.
Actually glad it was AP, and not some hyped Perry thing. I mean, if they'd all reconciled just for one night, and Perry did this...well, then it'd be bad press. But hey, who really gives a s#it? It's just the music business selling more product. That's America...and yes (In my best John Wayne), 'why I love her'.

Seeing as Perry was trending Top five on twitter right along with Journey after the performance, it didn't seem to matter if he was there physically or not.

SP just happening to be on TMZ might have helped also.

It's all about PR for the song, and in a small way - to celebrate the band the gave it us. Most probably didn't care about Perry not being there, although, after the fact, I'm sure that many wondered about him & quickly decided that he just wasn't around any more...so they accepted the new guy (AP) as a current singer. I think the school-boy hair cut probably made people wrinkle their eye brows...but overall, nobody cared. DSB has become a new anthem, and everyone likes it for just that. Probably not a whole lot more.
On a side note... I wanna say that Perry now has the onus to get himself back in to the public eye. I mean, the CMT audience doesn't care about AP, and they probably never cared much for Perry either. So, if Perry feels slighted in any way, he will really have to get out there and do some major press...if not prove to everyone that's he's still alive & vocally well.
Does Perry still have an ego, or does he truly not give a s#it any more?
