This was never intended to be about Journey at all. They were just the nostalgia act supporting Rascal Flatts, and both were riding the coat tails of DSB's recent resurgence. That's all.

Actually glad it was AP, and not some hyped Perry thing. I mean, if they'd all reconciled just for one night, and Perry did this...well, then it'd be bad press. But hey, who really gives a s#it? It's just the music business selling more product. That's America...and yes (In my best John Wayne), 'why I love her'.

Seeing as Perry was trending Top five on twitter right along with Journey after the performance, it didn't seem to matter if he was there physically or not.

Fuck me that man had a one of kind voice eh! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NQIPVqLMUg&ob=av2e Every time I watch any of these old clips it just makes me think how lucky we were to witness that chemistry and all that talent on one stage.........lol, whether we knew it/or appreciated it back then or not. 8)

Yeah, I'm always amazed how many people dig the Houston performance of DSB when the one from Japan just totally blows it out of the water. When I saw the Tokyo one on MTV (I think it was the second week of MTV being on the air and only three weeks after the actual Tokyo show) I knew I had to buy Escape.

It totally obliterates tonight's attempt and every other live version as far as I'm concerned but then again, I'm bias as that was the video that really got me onto the Journey train. Vocals, guitar, keyboards, everything was money in that clip.

Meh.
From all the stuff I've heard and owned, Perry live was flawless up until Captured. Then Cain joins the band, Perry unleashes his 5 o' clock shadow, and it's accompanied by unnecessary vocal histrionics and bizarre pronunciations. Live in Houston is overrated as hell, as is that version of "Mother, Father"... though I accept that there is a tremendous difference between a live singer and a recording of a live singer.

It's all about PR for the song, and in a small way - to celebrate the band the gave it us. Most probably didn't care about Perry not being there, although, after the fact, I'm sure that many wondered about him & quickly decided that he just wasn't around any more...so they accepted the new guy (AP) as a current singer. I think the school-boy hair cut probably made people wrinkle their eye brows...but overall, nobody cared. DSB has become a new anthem, and everyone likes it for just that. Probably not a whole lot more.

On a side note... I wanna say that Perry now has the onus to get himself back in to the public eye. I mean, the CMT audience doesn't care about AP, and they probably never cared much for Perry either. So, if Perry feels slighted in any way, he will really have to get out there and do some major press...if not prove to everyone that's he's still alive & vocally well.

Does Perry still have an ego, or does he truly not give a s#it any more?

I still believe that Sony getting that clip up on MTV so quickly and the heavy rotation of it because of the station's lack of American music videos at that time is one of the primary reasons that Escape went to #1.

that clip is orders of magnitude better... diction, phrasing, emoting... drumming by the guy who invented the parts.... and the money note...

Arnel would not have the gig he has now...for some strange reason...

Of course not. As Herbie said, everybody's view of the Perry years are jaded. From Escape onward (and during ROR especially), his performances had shortcomings, and could easily be micro-critiqued to death. If the internet was around in 1983, they probably would have.

Agreed.
Revisionist history is a funny thing. The Schon-Salahi fiasco was a textbook example: in addition to being an accomplice in adultery, Neal could no longer play the guitar at all according to half the overweight soccer moms across America.

I think SP still had his Captured vocal sound at that time of the tour, probably the best he ever sounded. When I saw them open for the Stones a few months, later he was just starting to get a bit rough. Seven months later when I saw them again, he was definitely closer to the Frontiers sound vocal wise than what he had sounded like on Escape.

Captured is pretty much the embodiment of stellar live vocals.
Hilariously, Perry sounded best when the songs were collectively at their worst. Then when Cain joined and the music improved, it was downhill from there. Hmm... I've heard Cain's presence is noxious, but there may be some truth to that after all, eh?

Thinking about it...if Herbie hadn't chosen RF or SP to go with as their singers...
who would have made a good choice for a singer back then?
And what genre would their music have been in?

Who knows? Contrary to what Loons may think, Steve Perry wasn't the only singer in the late '70s. With the combined experience and connections of Rolie, Schon, and Herbie, there's no telling.
Maybe country after all?

I'm with Don on that one. I also think it is better than the Houston version, actually I prefer that whole concert to the Houston one. Absolutely love their set list of the Japan show. And I just thought Perry seemed less polished and more raw and real on that one and I'm all about that Maybe it's just me but I loved some of thems gems on the Japan setlist that didn't get played as often......like: The Party's Over ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_-pcD9W ... re=related and Dixie Highway, Lay It Down, etc.
