Also, I read the whole interview on the Classicrockrevisited site, and it's clear that Luke is talking about his SOLO tour, not TOTO. He's saying this in reference to the fact that on his solo tour HE'S playing rarities, instead of the hits. (Thus, if he WANTED to do the hits. he'd just hire a Bobby sound alike)
It's really a shot at Bobby, as he says later that Bobby'll be playing HOLD THE LINE till he's 90 (or something like that) implying that Kimball has nothing else interesting to play! So the shot is NOT at Journey, but (I think) at an old bandmate.

Interesting take on it...you may be right.

Could be...but from a financial side of things, Bobby has a much higher chance of making money than Luke does at the moment. Full band or not, the music of Toto will draw people. Ever Changing Times won't--mainly because nobody has heard of it. Hopefully, Luke will come towards NC at some point. Would be a fun show at attend.

I'll count myself lucky to have seen Toto when they played in Virginia a few years ago. Despite what they sound like on cd, they knew how to put on a rock concert.

True Dat.

Journey has sold something like 90 million records worldwide compared to about 15 million for Toto.

First off, I don't dispute Journey's commercial success compared to Toto's. I'm the biggest Toto fan you can imagine but will never suggest they are close.

However, you are exaggerating high for Journey and low for Toto.

90 million seems a little high. I thought it was more like 70 million. Ditto for the "20,000 seats wherever they go". I remember a 2500 seater show in Minneapolis a year or two ago. And while the show at the AC Center in Toronto is indeed at a 20,000 seat venue, they have Heart and Cheap Trick to help. Prior to that, they were playing 4000 seaters at Casino Rama just North of Toronto. My uncle has seen them three or four times there ... with many people being given free tickets on the Casino floor.

As for Toto, the worldwide sales are more like 30 million for that band. And the claim of "1500 seaters" across Europe is kind of silly too. Guess you've not seen them like in places like France, the Netherlands etc. Does it look like the DVD they did last spring was in front of a sparse crowd of 1500?

Other than their latest studio album and a few other songs on their catalog, I've always found Toto to be pretty underwhelming.

If we're talking about headlining, Journey has played in front of a 100,000 people. Has Toto ever headlined in front of more than 50,000 people? They've both been playoff contenders but Journey has won the Super Bowl while Toto has a division title in comparison. Both are good but one (Journey) is on a higher tier.

Well, you provide the proof, and I'll acquiesce. I lived in Europe and I am familiar with most of the venues I have seen in their tour repertoire the past five years. They seat between 500 and 2,500 people.

KOD Tour back in '92...

Someone can help me out here with some hard facts, but if you'd just listen to the Absolutely Live album, you'd be mistaken to think they were performing at a stadium instead of a concert hall...

Wow! So even though Europe is a big place with many countries, many venues in many cities, you personally found time to count them all? I'm impressed.

So ... here's a batch of random dates I pulled from here. I added in a quick capacity information by Google Search:

http://www.melodic.net/newsOne.asp?newsId=6950

Let's split em up by country.

UK - not one of Toto's biggest markets. Kind of in line with what you say:

12 March 2007 Colston Hall , Bristol (United Kingdom) - 2000 people
13 March 2007 City Hall , Newcastle (United Kingdom) - 2000 people
14 March 2007 Apollo , Manchester (United Kingdom) - 3500 people (uh oh)

Germany

17 March 2007 Porsche Arena , Stuttgart (Germany) - 7500 people (uh oh)
18 March 2007 Philipshalle , D?sseldorf (Germany) - 7500 people (uh oh)
21 March 2007 Olympiahalle , Munich (Germany) - 14,000 (uh oh)

Netherlands
19 March 2007 Heineken Music Hall , Amsterdam (Holland) - (5500)
22 March 2007 Olympia Halla , Innsbruck (Austria) - (3000)
24 March 2007 Galaxie , Metz (France) - (2700)
26 March 2007 Zenith , Paris (7000)
27 March 2007 Zenith , Dijon (France) (7000)
28 March 2007 Zenith , Nantes (France) (8500)
30 March 2007 Palaruffini , Turin (Italy) (4500)
01 April 2007 Palabam , Mantova (Italy) (2000)

So far, none as fallen into the "500-1500 seater" realm. A few came close, but all are bigger than you suggest. As for your claim of "Journey can sell out 20,000 seaters wherever they go":

I grabbed a random sample here too, from Journey's euro dates from 2006:

June 2nd Edinburgh, UK - Playhouse (3000)
June 5th Manchester, UK ? Apollo (2000)
June 7th Oberhausen, Germany - "Rock the Nation" at Oberhausen Arena (9000)

In short, you're exaggerating on both ends. I don't dispute Journey's popularity relative to Toto's, but you're understating Toto's and overstating Journey's.

I just found some old newsletters the other day from (sadly) around the time that Jeff Porcaro passed away. They talk about the creation of Absolutely Live and it sounds as though it's not actually "one concert" but rather recordings from numerous shows in numerous venues pieced together.
