Straight from the horses’ mouths. Jon said it was a quick, effortless writing/recording session. Neal said the album was mostly live … “hardly any overdubs” … WYLAW recorded in 3 takes.

By the way - nice find....they all sound happy to be together again! It's so sad that it has ended up the way it did :(
They should all listen to that interview again...maybe it would make them think back to the good old days!

You're right. Steve and Neal even joke about the size of their noses! It IS sad that it's come to this. Lack of patience fractured the stone, and I don't care if they had to wait 10 MORE years. If you're friends, and with the legacy they had, you would wait. You just do. Especially if someone is leary of having life-altering, major surgery. It's not like SP was saying "I just don't know if I really WANT to tour". But now you have a Franken-Journey out there sounding good, but will never, ever be the same.

Sad indeed.

Friends? Are you kidding? He left ROR tour and acted like maybe for a few years. They never heard from him all those years, ten years. He began work on the defunct CD and the FTLOSM CD and tour. He also did the memorial and contacted Herbie about it and asked him to get the Faithfully lyrics. He didn't ask Neal or Jon about it. Strange. There was no friendship. They were lured into thinking this time would be different, but he didn't want to tour. They all went their own way. Perry retired and Neal kept on keeping on. .

Someone hand Jana the pom poms she is doing the NEAL cheer again!!!!

Hell, yeah.

The bigger question isn't about Steve with Journey as that isn't going to happen. It was effectively over since '86 for all intents and purposes except for a brief reunion album pushed for by Sony.. It's why Perry, who coveted a solo career so much, has done nothing for 12 years. Someone who loved singing and was so emotional about it and the music-making process, I don't get it. That's what I wonder about.

I thought I would get the smackdown for that comment....I don't know why someone who was so passionate about it does not do it anymore...I think we all wonder why.

Maybe he just snapped....and that is the answer

SP's voice was or i should say should have been around the same in all levels including texture, control, tone and velocity. FTLOSM was awesome in terms of all the above and all reports from the sessions for recording on TBF were negative and a term used is (THE DIRTY DOZEN). What's up with that?

He records FTLOSM, he then tours, then they write and record TBF. Obviously the tour took it's toll before recording TBF...

But there was time in between he had some rest.....and I still think Missing You and Somewhere There's Hope are great vocal perfomances. I mean they are not rock songs, but the vocals are there.

and WYLAW is a great song and he sounds fine to me, yes it is different than 81, but it is a good different.

Maybe there is truth to the story that Perry got bronchitis near the "end" of the FTLOSM Tour. But we know he cancelled the tour and immediately entered talks with Journey. I don't know how long the details may have taken, but the writing of the album supposedly went very fast. So there wouldn't have been a lot of down time. It certainly would take longer for him to recover. And the "damage" (for lack of a better word) would be more obvious on the some songs with more edge, or with different ranges, than on others. Maybe that is why WYLAW sounds so good? It fits into Perry's "comfort zone" more than others?

Heres what I think. Perry heard they were going to look for another lead singer and he didnt like it so he shortened his tour and went after Journey. He is the voice of Journey and he knows it. He planned on touring and making albums with them into his twilight years and slowly fading out like the Stones did/are doing. Then the hip thing happened and and they refused to wait for him. He felt betrayed and hurt so he "Started the Divorce" and the rest is history. If he ever decides to sing it will be strictly for his fans (Which he knows are out there.) Because he doesnt have to sing anymore he has proven himself many times over. There thats enough talking.

I know Sony was pushing for Perry to return, they offered to promote another single from FTLOSM if he would rejoin (which they didn't do). Perry cuts his tour short figuring he will actually get more play for FTLOSM. Neal has always considered the money, I am certain Sony's money was substanial. We have already heard about the advance for the tour which they had to give back. Neal opts to the reunion/cash and loses Gregg and Kevin...a sad day to be sure. Perry goes to Hawaii and ends up getting out of touring. The band waits nearly two years and decides 'enough is enough, we were going to move forward without Perry before, we can again'.

Hysteria. Pyromania and Slippery When Wet are the holy trinity of Arena Rock albums, they just crushed everything before them.

I loved those 3 albums when they came out - would not even want a free copy now.

I wish I could find the website, but I read a quote from Moyes Lucas (FTLOSM drummer) where he said the Steve told the Strange Medicine band that he had "to go do this Journey thing and then we'll pick up where we left off". Apparently, according to Moyes, Sony wasn't going to release the next single from FTLOSM unless Steve got back with Journey, and once he did, they released it but did no promotion for it.
