It could go either way....really. Jack Blades said quite often, that he never listened to the Mojo album, while he was out of NR. He's completely believable with that....

Perry might not give two shits about Journey now (and subsequently Arnel) or he could secretly want to know everything they're doing. Frankly, I am inclined to think that Perry is the type that will protect the interests he has control over and ignore the rest....and to that end, not give two shits about Arnel....so to me it's believable that he's never heard Arnel at all.

But, I was refering to Gregg not knowing a thing about Arnel. He travels in much different musical circles these days...plus, it's sorta like Ancients in stargate not caring about 'lowers'.... ;)

I thought that too. I also thought it was kind of funny that neither Rolie or Arnel seemed to acknowledge each other as Rolie left the stage and Arnel came back out. Not that they should have, but even Friga was clapping for Rolie. I could understand no acknowledgement if Arnel was passing Perry or Augeri if they made a surprise appearance for a song or two, as there will/would always be comparisons and competition, even if friendly competition.

Maybe Arnel has no clue who he is

Or maybe it's really simple like the band was moving rapidly from one song to the other to build momentum and excitment. Does there always have to be dissection of every move? Arnel just shot back onto the stage for the next song. Some of you guys should work for the National Enquirer.

I got the feeling that they just squeezed Rolie into the set; I don't think they dropped any songs to make room for it. It was one song to the next all night, almost no talking, and they cut some of the instrumental transitions short.

Look, folks, there are no negatives here .... every member of the band acted gracious and looked happy to have Gregg up there ... we complain that Journey never does anything like this, and then we bitch when they do. Try uncomplicated joy on as a concept; you might like it.

Here's my Youtube of the first minute and a half of Just the Same Way shot from the front row. Video is bouncy cause I was hiding from the security Nazi; audio is pretty good. Deen's beautiful voice comes through loud and clear.

Of course Perry has heard of Arnel but actually hearing him sing? Totally believable. SoCal radio is all about Classic Journey, really nothing past 1983. Judging by the Stuff Perry shows interest in (NIN), i'm sure the Sirius/XM stations he listens to don't play adult contemporary music either.

After watching the short clip you put up Linda, seemed to me Neal looked at Gregg in a happy, meaningful way when Deen held that note for so long just like Perry did in the old vids I've seen of this song... Thanks for taking the chance of getting caught and sharing this with us!

hmm....perhaps they can just get rid of Arnel and Friga and have Dean sing the necessary Perry songs....and they can do the whole prog/abraxis thing....

Who would sing their Survivor covers for them or represent them as the homeless youtube star on the talk show circuit?

Deen has a wonderful voice; I was amazed when I heard him hold that note that long. My mind wandered over several scenarios after listening to it.

The ACL festival is this weekend and I'm wondering if Neal et al will hang around for it... Neal, if you are staying here and planning on playing somewhere in Austin, will you please say so on your blog? :D

I'd have killed to see that show, even if Rolie did only play/sing on one song.

Sign him up, record an epic final album (make it a double with all original material). Get some writing from Perry as well. Hell, bring him in on the production. One last big ass tour and close the book on Journey.

Sounds like a plan.

Good post, Dr. I wish I would have been there next to you on the front row. You're a very lucky lady to see that. Reminds me of the time when I saw them do the Santana set at Konocti in 2002. That was awesome! I wish I could find some audio of that!

If I remember the story correctly... JC OWES his gig in Journey to Rolie... cause when Rolie told Herbie he was leaving the group, he suggested JC as his replacement....

Does anyone think that Gregg Rolie could be part of this "conceptual album" that Neal referred to? And could that "concept" be past and present members? :)

That brought a tear to my eye, too. I was only lucky enough to see Journey live when Gregg was in the band a couple of times and this video sure brings back memories. I got to know Gregg & his wife Lori back in the 1980s when we had the Journey softball team. Gregg was the team pitcher and we'd hang out at games. He and his family are the best. I'm sorry we lost touch.

Rolie sure as Hell didn't sound too good in this clip. Granted he came off the bench cold, but he cracked a few times. A hoarse Rolie is better than a healthy Cain, but Cain lips his EG song anyways so it doesn't matter.

Hmmm, I thought it was me but I didn't think Greg sounded too great either but reunion wasa nice and deen kicked ASS!

It's probably like when you have an ex with a bad split. Some people want to know who the other is fucking now and what not, some people would just rather not think about it as if it never happened. I think Perry has to have heard Arnel at least here and there, if by nothing else other than sheer accident. But it wouldn't surprise me if he was pretty nonchalant about the whole thing and didn't actively try to figure it out. More like running into the ex with the new guy/girl at the mall or the movies than asking mutual friends about it...
