I didn't know that. Strange they didn't put it on "Ride The Lightning". In the UK at least it was originally on the B-Side of the "Creeping Death" single. And it's now on the Garage Inc covers CD over here.

Just listening to the San Diego boot and right at the intro for Who's Cryin' Now you hear someone say "Deen sings this one". JSS starts singing and then you just hear from the same person "Oh".
I found it funny.

There were a lot of funny comments on that one. Have you heard them before Jon's solo? "Where's your lighter?" LOL!

Kansas - The Preacher. I realized how great Kansas were even with Morse on guitar. This is one of his best solos...

I love the version of that song on "Device Voice Drum" with Steinhardt adding his signature violin.

In his prime, Steve Walsh was every bit the singer that Steve Perry was. He had an incredible voice.

and Queen + Paul Rodgers live... love the 2nd CD in that set...and how Paul starts the into to all right now... It was all right then---well its all right now.. Loved that concert when it came to the US this last spring...

I love this Kansas track too...

Dust In The Wind - Kansas

I'm less sure about their 80s AOR period though. Not bad - but does anyone agree the qualities which made them special were ironed out a bit in the 1980s? Or is this unfair?

I agree. Though both "Power" and "In the Spirit of Things" are awesome AOR albums, the lack of violin and those classic Kansas arrangements really made them seem like a whole other band. Unfortunately, it was also the era where Walsh's voice started going downhill due in large part to his substance abuse and also using bad technique.

Here's a clip from the "Vinyl Confessions" tour doing "Chasing Shadows", which is kind of a "Dust in the Wind" Part 2. It's a great song, with John Elefante as their lead singer. His vocals were actually just as good as Walsh's.

So true.
But these 2 records contain some unnamed gems like Musicatto (a great instrumental) or Rainmaker (the middle instrumental section is nothing short of spectacular).
While different, it's also good hearing bootlegs with Morse playing the violin parts on his guitar, it sounds special. 8)
