LOVE this one :D

I was reading an interview with Yngwie Malmsteen in a guitar magazine I had at one time and they did this segment where they played some random songs for him and asked him to comment. They played him a Pearl Jam song and he said it was horrible. Actually, I found the text of the interview...

"PEARL JAM
"GO"
Vs., Atlantic (1993)

I am going to dig my own grave right now. I think the singer in Pearl Jam should go eat some Pearl Jam! He cannot sing to save his life! And the guitar player needs to seek help. The guitar solo is terrible -- it's just wank-off, wah-wah pedal bullshit! That's the most disgusting thing, so tasteless, so common, so blatant -- the worst! There are a couple of people like Clapton, Hendrix, Angus Young, Ritchie Blackmore, even Jimmy Page, they played pentetonic -- the regular stuff -- but did it with taste. But the guitarist in Pearl Jam, and the lead player in Metallica, they've got no taste what-so-ever. I don't want to comment on that song anymore."

That whole segment of the interview was hilarious...

That was great, Mindy. Did you know this was Bon Scott's last ever TV appearence? It was filmed for a Spanish show a week before he died.

Here's AC/DC in the UK...also from February 1980...

Okay..the guitarist in Pearl Jam is no great shakes but Kirk Hammett? Kirk is WAY better than Malmsteen...and perhaps more crucially in Malmsteen's eyes...much more successful and influential too.

Interview sounds like a real laugh though....will read the full version now.... Thanks Dave.

Sorry, Kirk is not way better than Malmsteen. Most guitarists would tell you that Malmsteen is the better player, technicaly speaking. Whether someone likes one player over the other is another matter.

As for Metallica, I actually prefer Hetfield's playing to Hammett's. He's the one that usually plays the more melodic bits and he also is the monster rhythm player of the two.

I don't doubt that in terms of pure technique Malmsteen is the flashier player. But Hammett plays with much more soul and melody...and his solos are much more memorable. So it depends on what criteria we're judging them by.

But yes...as you say...it's totally subjective...

I disagree that Hetfield is the one who usually plays the melodic solos in Metallica. He's certainly the monster rhythm player of the two though!

I believe Hetfield is the one who came up with and plays the melodic solos in "One" (intro soloing), "Nothing Else Matters", and "The Unforgiven".

Me, too, and I'm not really a huge Def Leppard fan. But they were huge when I was a junior and senior in high school. I was also a big VH fan at the time.

I'm not saying he has never played a melodic solo...I just disagreed that he "usually" plays them. Anyway...this conversation is getting a bit nerdish isn't it?
