OMG, he covered Sam Cooke!!!! An acquaintance gave me 2 Sam Cooke CDs. I haven't had a chance to listen to them yet. Nor have I watched the whole Washington video yet. It's either very late or very early where I am now depending on your perspective. Wow, he must be very comfortable with them and them with him. This is the most publicity The Eels have ever had. At this rate, they really could score a talk show appearance or a story on ET or That Metal Show.

Well, I guess it's time to troll every one of The Eels tour dates for Steve Perry videos  Or bite the bullet and actually go to a show. It seems like Perry has unofficially joined The Eels. Who needs Journey?

It looks like The Eels will perform in San Francisco at the Palace of Fine Arts Theater on June 10th. Will Steve Perry come so close to his former stomping grounds? He'll be six months late for Neal's wedding. But as they say, "Better late than never" .

Here's the video- "It's A Motherf!@#$er, Only Sixteen, Open Arms, Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'". I'm not familiar with "Only Sixteen" was that a solo song or was it from Journey?

Okay, now Neal, Jon, and Ross will have to give a statement. Once could be ignored as a fluke, twice is now a thing. Steve Perry joining The Eels tour is officially a thing.

I'm a loon, but a realistic one. I loved the first performance, even though I didn't necessarily like the first performance... It was rough in a lot of ways, but it was SP getting back out there. So yes, I give it a pass because I love SP.

Last night's performance was MUCH improved. Of course it wasn't Live in Houston, but hey, neither will you see that tonight in Bristow. And if I had to choose between last night's version of SP singing the Journey catalog or Arnel's version tonight, SP gets my vote any day. You guys can criticize him all you want, but I'd be willing to bet when it came down to it you'd be right there beside me, Bic lighter floating overhead...

On another note... I really enjoyed the interview with Arnel with respect to SP. I hope he's sincere in his sentiments, and appreciate that to him there are more important things in life than being on the road 300 days a year. It almost seems like he's ready to call it quits, but is hanging in there because of a sense of duty to the band. I wish him well.

Steve doing Cooke almost a cappella , wow. Does not get much better.
He nails Mother efer again as well.

The Journey tunes sound a little better. I know the crowd eats it up, but wish he would do R&B covers or his own tunes.
But will take anything! :D

He sounds a bit rough on the Journey material, but still does a good job, the Sam Cooke and EELs song he did I thought were fanfuckingtastic. I wish he'd come out with a new album of material in that vein.

I agree. It is so good! ...Hubbard's the author but he says and I do so agree..the best way to prepare for life is to live!

I don't care what any one else has to say about any thing that I do. It's not that I want to hurt the feelings of others but I truly want to live my life and be as happy as I can possibly be. Don't get in the way with any harsh words judgements or criticisms it's just the reflection of who it is you are; I understand that. I want to be bold. I want to smile. I want to be happy. I think Mr. Perry is exactly where it is he should be.

Good luck to you Mr Perry. Sing your heart out and be happy. Do it because you like what you're doing.

much improved! Nice to hear a bit of Sam Cooke too. Can't argue with it. Too bad about the crack in OA, but hey, it's live. Still, that freaking tone. man...
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Ditto! Perry has that "IT" factor and charisma that is sorely missed in Journey. The guy has one heck of a gift and knows how to connect to a song. His voice is sounding better and he seems right at home up there on stage. I would be perfectly happy seeing him on a solo tour and hope he puts out new music in the near future. Would be great to hear him sing "Why Cant This Night Go On Forever".

Seems he is becoming more relaxed and commanding on the stage. Where will this lead? Who knows. Interesting to watch it unfold..

"Well, as I have said in the past, Steve and I have been talking. It's all been very friendly and nobody has been holding any grudges or anything stupid like that. One thing we all do agree on is we sort of missed the boat when we had our reunion. We gave the fans an album but no tour. So, Steve has been out doing some singing and he came up with the idea of giving the fans a late 40th anniversary tour. I have also talked to Gregg Rolie and he's willing to join us as well. We will keep Arnel to do all of the songs after Trial By Fire. Arnel and Deen will help Steve out on the older songs...and Gregg will do some of his songs to give everybody a break. We are planning to schedule it for next summer/fall to give Steve more time to get in shape and for the rest of us to finish our current plans."

Hey, may as well fan the flames :D

While he sounds different than he used to I still find myself thinking....."Damn I wish I could sing like that!"
He needs to record a new cd and tour. Play most of the new cd, stuff that's easier on his voice and play a handful of Journey tunes.

He certainly looked a lot more relaxed on the DC video than he did on the St Paul. One could imagine if he does a third or a fourth, it'll be easier for him still. It's two appearances more than I ever thought I'd ever see him perform again.

http://classicrock.teamrock.com/news/20 ... st-for-fun

Former Journey frontman Steve Perry made a second surprise guest appearance with Eels over the weekend – but he's underlined the stage stunts are just for fun.

And he's reiterated that there's no chance of a reunion with Neal Schon and co – despite current frontman Arnel Pineda saying he'd be welcome to reclaim his "righteous place."

He last week led a song in front of an audience for the first time in 19 years when he guested with Eels, and repeated the escapade over the weekend, performing four songs with frontman E and his band in Washington. He's also released a self-shot video of his earlier walk-on in Saint Paul, Minnesota – view it below.

Perry says: "People have been putting two and two together – but this wasn't about a reunion with Journey. There is no reunion. I was just having fun."

In Minnesota he performed Journey classics Open Arms and Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin' along with Eels track It's A Motherfucker. He explains: "I've always loved It's A Motherfucker because it's about loss and pain. We played it together in rehearsal, and the next thing I know I'm in Saint Paul. Someday I'm going to record that song.

"In a world where it's hard to keep a secret, it felt so much fun to walk out there to an unsuspecting crowd."

E, real name Mark Oliver Everett, introduced him by explaining he'd walked away from Journey because "it didn't feel right." Perry says: "I couldn't have put it better – that's exactly what happened. It had run its course."

He says of his moment in the spotlight: "When E announced me I thought I’d take the piss and hang back a while. But finally I’m out there; the audience saw me, and I hadn’t experienced that kind of emotion in quite a while. It was beyond exhilarating.

"I was so grateful that they were so loving and happy to see me. I was just as happy to see them. I had forgotten how much I’d missed it.”

Asked if he was happy with his performance, he replies: "Well, I hadn’t sung in 20 years – I sounded more like Otis Redding than I did in Journey; and I love Otis, so that’s not a bad thing. But after twenty years, wherever you hit that golf ball is where it lands. I just wanted to go out there and hit the ball. I was pretty pleased with what I pulled off.

"I’m not the person I was thirty years ago; that person is gone."

Perry recently confirmed he'd been writing material with a view to recording a solo album. He says his Eels experience has made him more determined than ever that his latest songs should be heard, adding: "it's very important for me. I wrote a new song just last week."

"Personal attack?" After all the shit-slinging we've all engaged in, you count that as a personal attack? Hardly. If I wanted to "attack" you, I'd be much more overt about it (as I've done in the past). The only one offended here is you.

and like I said in another earlier post in this thread... he needs to work his voice into shape... after a 20 year layoff it takes some time..

And like I said in another earlier post in this thread, if Perry's performance sucked, why should I give him a standing ovation? Speaking of cups, I've never been one to sip from the Loon water fountain.

Why don't you stop jacking off for the next 20 years and see how good you are when you resume...

Do you often fantasize of me jacking off?

Forum version of thinking out loud here... Would anyone be interested in a 'Steve Perry of today' rerecording of some of the Journey material? Kinda like the 2-disc package that was Revelation...? Old favorites with his new material - or even a few "bonus tracks" on a new album.

I'd love to hear Stone in Love, WCTNGOF, and Faithfully to name a few.

Nice thought. I'm thinking people are taking this waaaaaay too seriously. I'd love to hear him sing WCTNGOF! Or, sing a tune with Adele. Something different and something worthy of his talent. I don't think he'd want to put any pressure on himself but people can't help but think of all the possibilities! Fun. Love and Happiness. Nothing in the world can beat any of those things.

WCTNGOF?

As to Stone IN Love, I think that would be a huge stretch for him to rerecord and do it justice. Some of the FRONTIERS, ROR, TBF absolutely.

As to Stone IN Love, I think that would be a huge stretch for him to rerecord and do it justice. Some of the FRONTIERS, ROR, TBF absolutely.

I'd love to hear Stone in Love, WCTNGOF, and Faithfully to name a few.

I'm brain-dead... I'm thinking Still They Ride and typing Stone In Love. I'd love to hear "Jesseeee riiiiiidessss...."

Why would he need to redo Journey music at all? It's not like he is in a karaoke bar and has to choose from a selection of songs already done before. Perry is 65 years old. I don't think he should waste one second of his life trying to relive the past or try and do again what was already done. I don't want to hear him sing any Journey song ever again, but would love to hear him do some new songs we never heard him do.

2-disc set... Best of both worlds, new take on an old love.... or for people like you a collectors edition coaster for your favorite frosty beverage. It's all good! :-)
