I'd want him to go into the Sam Cooke direction, too. Don't know if he'd ever tour, but he'd have to do some Journey.....but the way he's doing Open Arms and LTS is fine.

Good Grief! I really truly thought I'd never see the day! Good for Steve and I hope he keeps singing. I thought he sounded great.

I've mentioned this before, but:

If Perry has the itch to perform again, but doesn't want to go on an actual TOUR, here's a great option for him:

Do the Garth Brooks thing. Have a Vegas show. Play 2 nights a week, like Thursdays and Saturdays. That's what Garth did, when he was not touring but wanted to keep performing. He flew in, played, and went back home. And he lives farther away than Perry does.

You can do stripped-down versions of a few Journey songs, some Perry solo, and some oldies that you like, such as the Sam Cooke songs that you love so much. (as do most of us) And maybe some new stuff, too, if you like.

It'd be a great way to work your voice back into shape without committing to a tour all over the country and the travel and all that goes with it. Work up your show, then fly in on Thursday morning, and roll back home Saturday night or Sunday morning. Or hell, play Friday and Saturday, and you have 5 other days to yourself.

Then if you decide you want to really tour, you can. If not, I'm sure the place will be filled every night and you can get your rock star on.

After showing the DC video to my sister-in-law (who is a much younger Journey fan), I then showed her a clip of Sam Cooke, who she wasn't familiar with. She couldn't believe the similarities and nuances, and to my surprise and delight, is really interested in checking out more of Sam...and seeing Perry continue on the soulful road. If Perry does decide to continue on with his career, that's the direction that I really hope to see. Last week's performance is proof that the soulful road is where he can be the most creative, and like others have said, build an even stronger fan base. He can still have fun revisiting some of his songs from the past, adding a soulful and bluesy feel like he did with LTS, without having to strive for the soaring high notes. He's set the creative bar and paved the road already for the Journey material, and Arnel is doing the best job possible keeping that signature sound alive. If he does ever have the itch to revisit Journey, my wish would be to see it done realistically to match his current vocal styles...unplugged with Neal on acoustic guitar and Smith on percussions.

Compare it to Steve's rendition, and it really shows what a great singer like Steve can do for a song. The Eels version is good. It is a nice musical arrangement, and the lyrics are thoughtful and emotional. But Steve just makes it ooze with heartfelt pain and emotion. Unbelievable how good that man can interpret a song after doing nothing all these years.

Haha.... I thought for sure SP must be ad-lipping (as he in the past like to do.. always changing up on songs) in the YT video (the one with over 1M views). This is a real song... but who is The Eels? Never heard of them ...are they a regional Band?

The Eels are an alt-rock band that had some hits in the 90's, some soundtract stuff to I think. They're still making lots of music today. I was into them for a while. Kind of like Ben Folds Five. Definitely not from the same genre as Journey...but that's not a bad thing (although I'm sure many of the classic rock die-hards on this board may disagree  ). There's tons of music and musicians out there that do not fall anywhere near mainstream, many of which I enjoy more of these days. Nice to see a band like them get noticed once in a while.

Well, I guess it's time to troll every one of The Eels tour dates for Steve Perry videos  Or bite the bullet and actually go to a show. It seems like Perry has unofficially joined The Eels. Who needs Journey?

It looks like The Eels will perform in San Francisco at the Palace of Fine Arts Theater on June 10th. Will Steve Perry come so close to his former stomping grounds? He'll be six months late for Neal's wedding. But as they say, "Better late than never" .

Here's the video- "It's A Motherf!@#$er, Only Sixteen, Open Arms, Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'". I'm not familiar with "Only Sixteen" was that a solo song or was it from Journey?

Yeah... I'm a card-carrying Loon ... stayed up all night catching up ... finding this link to the DC video ... wow.... spine-tingling performance. You guys (not you, FF) put down his performance in St. Paul all you want .... this one at DC is simply sensational. The Man just commands the stage (even at 65) ... the guys in the Eels seemed like his backup band.... like WOW.... he didn't sing or move around like an old man. I can die happy now.

My opinion is that he needs to stay away from Journey tracks. For a guy that's continuously tried to get away from that whole thing to go back there, to that catalog, would just be wrong, hypocritical, and I think boring.

Do his solo thing, as it was, more R&B, whatever... but he should just leave the Journey renditions for live shows. Why record what's been done already?

I mean seriously, after waiting THIS LONG for the guy to SING, to have him do stuff that we've already heard a million times... for me, that'd be a HUGE letdown. Let's hear all this stuff he's been working on for the last 20 years. Let's hear the Nuno Bentencourt stuff. DOES ANYONE HAVE THAT STUFF?? - I would LOVE to hear THAT.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

I don't post very much, but I read a lot.
I'm in remission from cancer, and I think what Mr.Perry did was pretty gutsy. He came back on his own terms, in his own time, having just lost his woman to cancer, and going through it himself.

That's rough, especially back to back like that.
If you've gone through the disease and come out, it changes your perspective on life.
I'd be willing to bet some of that change in perspective had something to do with him hitting the stage again.

Anyway, I thought Perry's rendition of Open Arms was the most soulful rendition I've ever heard.
It's not my favorite Journey song, but I'd rather hear him do it with such passion than hear someone else singing it trying to sound like Perry in 1981.

Become the person you were meant to be, light your inner fire and follow your Heart's Desire~~~leon brown...I think he is doing so well. You see the smile, hear the laughter, see the grin and hear that voice! As a friend of mine described...there is such tenderness when he sings; it makes her cry. It makes me smile because it is his heart's desire.

Agree with this.

I would like to hear him record that Eels song. He sounded good on that and it suits him. Much more interesting than revisiting the Journey stuff.

Journey, "Journey's Greatest Hits" - No. 46 - The band's former singer, Steve Perry, made a surprise return to the concert stage (with the eels!) on May 25, after 19 years. Video footage of Perry singing Journey oldies made its way to YouTube, and perhaps spark the 19 percent gain for "Greatest Hits" (up to 6,000 for the week). It jumps from No. 62 to No. 46.

Is anybody here actually planning on going to an Eels concert? There's a couple of people on tumblr who are going to the Seattle and San Francisco shows. Tumblr is a hot bed of young Journey/Steve Perry fans. They are fine, fine loons in the making :P . The Eels aren't coming to a concert venue near me. But would anyone else here go?
