I think that's his real voice. His normal speaking voice sounds the same way. There is a video of him talking to Cyndy Lauper when they were recording We Are The World and when he demonstrates a falsetto ( or something along those lines) to her, it sounds completely natural as he sings it at the end of his sentence.
