That's interesting...because before Jonathan joined the band, Journey hardly had any hits at all.
The evidence is the exact opposite of what you say....Jonathan's songwriting infused Journey's songs with hit-making potential...something Perry could not do.
Talk about being off a rocker.
Pre-JC JOURNEY spent 4 years building a fan base after bringing in SP. Not an easy task. JC came in after all of the tough work was done!
Furthermore, HH's plan was to create an "evergreen" catalog - lots of hits but no #1's. I agree with this because as he said, once you hit #1 then you've got nowhere to go but down. When Gregg left more control started to shift towards SP who was (along with JC) hungrier for a major hit.
Of course, the #1 hit was held off by Michale Jackson however they did manage #1 album with E5C4P3 which is held up as THE JOURNEY album of all time.
There you have it. Ultimately, E5C4P3 doesn't diminish the music that came before it. As far as Billboard standings the pre-JC music is lower however they weren't necessarily trying for high ranking hits.
HH was right and JC came in at JOURNEY's peak. I'm not diminishing his contributions at all. I'm simply saying that he didn't bring any more hit potential into the band that their previous touring and recording didn't already prime them for!
