I think the re-records are absolutely fantastic. .

Hey Matthew, they are raw and for the most part completely unedited. They were cut in less than a week and done mostly in a take or two. I love the fact that they're basically as close to being "live" as you can get.

Saint John...yes...I guess so...but I'm wondering why they didn't just do audio versions of the Vegas show? I've never been a fan of bands going into the studio and knocking things off...reminds me of the punk and grunge ethos...whereas I prefer the idea of mad obsessives like Tom Scholz spending five years on a lead guitar part.

Journey are one of the bands where I expect a big, overproduced sound and I think there was an oppotunity to surprise us just a bit with the re-records...or at least to make us feel they were taking it seriously rather than spending as little time as possible to fulfill an obligation to Wal-mart.

Awesome points...but I think Neal and Jon got a bit too excited and saw the window for them to tour this summer closing rapidly and they did as best a job as they could to make them good and be able to tour in support of a new album. And they needed the re-records to get the Wal Mart backing. It's been a huge success, though I do wish they could have taken a few more weeks with BOTH albums and polished them up a bit more. All in all, I'm a pretty happy camper with what we got, though.

Do you really think the new stuff needed to be polished up as well? I think it sounds pretty smooth actually. Might be a bit lightweight and lacking in edge but it still sounds reassuringly expensive....

I just can't listen to Disc 2. But I have played most of the new songs a lot recently...but I'm already feeling they might be getting rinsed out.

Agreed. Neal has to tour and play in front of people. It's his "drug." God, I envy a motherfucker that can do what he loves to for a living and get paid loads of dough doing so. More power to him.

Not disputing that he doesn't have righteous bucks, but there are a lot of people that say some in the band need the cash. Maybe it isn't Neal but some of the other guys then? If it's just about performing then Neal could do a solo tour and play anything he wanted instead of many of the same songs.

Do me a favor and give my boys in Triumph the same drug Neal has so they get their buts out there on a full world tour.

I'm sure like the rest of the world it's likely that the guys either live outside of their means or very close, but Neal has made a shitload of money over the last 10 years...a fucking shitload. Between Nocturne, the back catalog, touring, and the new album and tour, the man is loaded beyond belief. I think Friga learned his lesson and is pretty frugal these days. Ross and Deen seem like they could be wild spenders. I saw Ross drop a few bucks in Vegas on the roulette table.

Matthew I understand that. As a musician myself I was just thinking that if he doesn't need/want the money then just follow your artistic instinct. For example Rik Emmett did a few years where he only played jazz and avoided the cash in of a Triumph reunion, and sort of still is. I got to hear one of my favorite artists expand his horizons in a variety of musical styles rather than hear Magic Power every summer. Don't get me wrong, right now I am salivating to hear Fight The Good Fight live from the power trio. But Rik resisted the temptation for many years and my music collection is much the better for it. Neal Schon is great, but if he really is set for life, why not explore the guitar more instead of banging out the same old songs every summer for the most part?

Greed of course is always a plausible motive...and if we feel nostalgic for the glory days can you imagine how it felt for them to be the biggest band in America at one point? Hard for them to let go of that period of their lives.

But you're right...how he isn't going completely insane playing the same limited selection of songs from his career...and with such little re-interpretation..is puzzling given his immense talent.

I would LOVE to hear Neal take some of the styles he's employed in his solo career, and use them in Journey music.

The distinctly 80s touch of "Late Nite," the clean groove of "Beyond the Thunder," the electro feel of "I on U," the gritty grind of "Piranha Blues"....

Neal's solo career is a fully satisfying rainbow of guitar.

Mine is almost falling apart.What did they use recycled potty paper to make the case? they didnt print the songs on the Cd .I have to try to remember what order the songs are in,thats hard for a dude with ADD [mild}

It's certainly missing an ending. You feel like you're right in the middle of the song, and bam, it ends. Strange. I like the melody though.
