Do you remember when "encores" were more or less sponteaneous? Journey has been playing almost the same encore for years now. Sometimes it is "Faithfully" but most of the time it is "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'". When did encores become "scripted"? When did bands start to save one of their hits (that get one of the biggest responses) for an encore. When I go to concerts nowadays, I can usually guess what the encore will be because I can pick out the biggest hit that is missing from the set! Encores used to be a unique experience filled with some magical performances due to their "jam" nature! An encore used to show off 'influences" of the band, or what members of the band were listening to at the time. They gave a little more insight into the band. Now they are merely calculated ends to the shows. And many times, it takes away from the rest of the concert experience.

Last year I read a review of a Duran Duran Reunion show. Apparantly the band was not in "return to form" shape yet so the show was pretty lackluster. As the band left the stage at the end of their regular set the audience was apparntly completely willing to let them go. There was reportedly little 'fanfare'. But the band returned to the stage shortly after, made comments like 'Thank you so much' 'So you want some more?' or some such cliche crap. And then they proceeded to play one of their biggest hits. The audience didn't care and it was painfully obvious that the band had 'choreographed' their encore.

I would like encores to be real again. If the crowd cheers, the band comes back out and plays something "off the cuff". Play all your songs during the set! I am not a fan of cover songs, but in concert, as a part of an encore, they could be magical!

Bring back the real encore.

(Angie, if this were the case, would it have been acceptable at "your" show? The band played, were not happy with the actions of the crowd or did not feel the crowd 'wanted' an enore, so they left? Just hypothetical...since they did play LTS, which is almost always their encore)

Since we're on the topic....I seem to recall during my attendance to a Journey concert during the Frontier's tour (mind you I was only 5 years old, and had no idea of what that "funny smoke smell" in audience or the latter implications of "Stone in Love" would have on my life)... an extended "Jam Session" by the band, sans Steve Perry....Do any of the "old school" fans remember something like this? I don't know if it was due to Perry having a hissy fit or what...but there seemed to be some more spontaniaty with the band with the two Steve's in the band vs. today....BTW, I watched the 2001 Live in Vegas "Direct TV" tape I have (never picked up the DVD) and have to say, the performance was a bit lack luster, especially when compared with the Houston DVD and what I recall about the show I saw a couple of months ago..

Arrival 2001 was about I think, getting the hits out there and recorded. It was for Direct TV, and it was important that the casual fans hear Augeri sound good. He did, o boy did he. As for spontenaitey, I believe right now, at the comfort level they are in, they have plenty of impulsive playing.

Again, this band right now today, is better than any other lineup, Period.

I remember the Powerstation record....good stuff - right around the time of "Live Aid"....Ohh yeah, and Phil Collins playing drums with Led Zepplin....yeah...and later hearing Phil was disappointed in his playing because he'd been out of practice....yeah..woah...rambling....ok...back to Andy Taylor - wasn't he in Missing Persons? Anyone catch the "Hit me 1 more time"? No Terry Bozio and no Andy Taylor....lame!

I don't think Andy Taylor was in Missing Persons. But he did play for Belinda Carlisle's first solo CD.

See, this is the thing. No band is ever going to play a "deep cut" or "album filler" or whatever you want to call it. If it's not been on the radio, it's not going to be an encore song...or at least not the last song of the night. I don't think I've ever seen a band that has played anything but a hit for their encore.

Eh, in '04, Journey brazenly chose to play the largely unknown "Party's Over" as their encore. Granted they dropped it in a matter of weeks, but still...

I've never heard it on the radio. I think it was a mid-charter when it debuted. Still, it's not a big hit and it's not widely known (at least not around my area).
The fact that Journey was so swift in removing it from the set list confirms this.

Because I remember the public uproar over at BT when the band decided to pull it. I'm sure Dave can confirm. Party's Over did not remain in the setlist for very long in 04. Neither did other rare cuts such as Happy to Give or Opened the Door. Glad they kept in Dead or Alive, Suzanne, Mother Father etc. They were the highlight of the show for me.

The guy who replaced Andy Taylor in Duran Duran had been in Missing Persons. His name escapes me at the moment, I read sometime back that after the original DD reunited, he started doing porn. ??

Now I remember, its Warren Cucirullo (sp?).

Warren Cuccurullo - 8 inches and not hard core porn (I'll leave it at that) - LOL

Warren and Terry Bozzio are working in the studio on new music, it's only been 20 years :)

Yeah, what ever happened to the two or three song encore?

I know in Waukegan they didn't have enough time for another song. The show stopped at 10:57pm and they were "allowed" to play until 11:00. It depends on the timing and venue.

I saw them 5 times this year, mostly in venues where there were no time constraints or noise issues. LTS alone was always the encore.

Said it before. Taylor is a speedballing hard rocking guitarist squatting almost undetected in a pop band. Criminally underused. Timmy Farris of INXS also comes to mind, though INXS rocks more.

Sounding a bit like Perry here.
If you read my entire post and the original post by journeyman, you would know we were talking about a time when bands used to play two to three songs for their encores, many times including a more "off the cuff" song; as journeyman put it; before finally going into that last hit.

I don't think I've ever seen a band that has played anything but a hit for their encore.

That's too bad. As I said, there was a time were bands used to really jam out their encores, playing more obscure stuff, jams or brand new songs. The crowd going crazy with anticipation. Pure magic.

Why do you think that is now? Is this with most bands? Playing the same old set list, coming back for 1 or maybe 2 encores and calling it a day?

Deano, what other music do you like?

I have their greatest hits. And I saw them live with a girlfirend in high school. Met the singer. I love Deeper and Deeper, Red Skies at Night, etc.

It used to be a game, make the crowd beg for more. The harder you beg, the more you get. It got a little old.
Haven't seen a lot of other bands lately. I know Queen and Paul Rodgers play 3 to 4 song encores and Santana too.

Very cool. They have a lot of great stuff outside of their greatest hits. Might I suggest Reach The Beach, Phantoms and Elemental? I never got a chance to see them live in their heyday, but have seen them several times in the last couple of years. In fact, drove through a nasty snowstorm to see them on St Pat's day...but it was worth it! They are sounding better then ever.

I like a lot of the "80's preppy" music, too. U2 used to be considered that way in the early 80's. Don't hate me, Deano. I can still rock with the best of them.
