Just my taste, I wish the vocals were more of a presents up front.

Yes, but I like the vocal more up front. You can tell, by looking back how I graded the cd, I think very highly of it. #2 on the Journey list. So I am not downing the cd, or Augeri's voice.

So, here's the good, the bad, and....Ross:

1. TFITH - Nice synth chords in the intro; almost sounds like "Enigma", IMO. The opening melodic phrase on guitar is a direct crib of U2's "Pride (In the Name of Love)". Neal's tone is crystal clear and SINGS!! However, SA is very much in the background, IMO. At 7 minutes, it rivals a song length on OUR CD.

2. TPIYH - Opening chord progression is a crib of Foreigner's "That Was Yesterday". Again, Neal's guitar sings.

3. ABL (Deen) - NOW we're talking! IMO Deen captures the SP sound....intentional? Who knows...but it's what I picked up on. Personally, I think they should have him sing everything. Nice "driving" beat...the "aahs" kill me in a good way....I REALLY LIKE THIS SONG...my eyes bugged out at the high note he hits 3+ mins. in....nice reverb on the guitar...This is the first song that really grabbed me...."We were allowed to flllyyyy...."....beautiful.

4. EJ (Jon) - Walked around to find more writing paper.....nope....1:40 mins
in....NEXT...

5. Butterfly - Trying too hard to be "dramatic"....again, SA fades into the background...I didn't expect to hear a GUY sing about a Butterfly....1:25...NEXT...

6. Believe - Is this trying to be a "progressive" song??? BOR-ING...1:40 mins. in....NEXT....

7. KTYLM - 1,2,3....2,2,3....3,2,3....and Waltz....SA again in background....losing attention....2:15 mins in....NEXT....

8. OOHW - Driving rock....Neal doin' his thang....SA again in background....well, he CAN hit the higher notes with strength...slams on the brakes at the end...well alrighty, then! 8)

9. ISD (Neal) - Nice "80s Rock" bounce...SA's "answer" vocals are nice!...Neal & SA harmonize well...Neal (again) SHREDS!!....3:05 time - just right.

10. BT - Can't understand SA...again, he's in the background....nothing stands out...2:55...NEXT...

11. GC (Ross) - HARMONICA?!...Nice "Rock Swing"....Oh LORD - ROSS SOUNDS LIKE IGGY POP!! ("Ya gotta lust for life...")
Well, it's......uh......different...

12. BTC - Pretty, but uneventful....2:30...NEXT...

13. NTL (Deen) - Deen's voice really grabs me....this is the 2nd time he's on lead vox, and I'm very interested - at 55 seconds in. It reminds me of "80s Pinnacle Journey".
Ooh....flange effect on the vocals...very nice! Neal's great, as usual....this song is somewhere between "Escape" & "Frontiers", IMO. Nice "counter-melody" on background vox....5 min. duration.....I was hooked every second.

14. TPOTF (Jon) - Jon has to follow DEEN?! Ack....too "Hallmark Card" for me....1:20 in....NEXT....

15. SSB (Neal Guitar solo) - NIce tone, but the melody gets lost between the ambient sound of live concert and his 16th note runs....kinda confused me.

Well, there you have it.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

I'd play tracks #3, #9, and #13 only, and skip the rest.

What a half-hearted effort.
You could've at least listened to the songs in their entiriety.

Interestingly, I recall a year ago or so, Nora gave "Arrival" an F-rating because she said the album was trying too hard to factitiously re-create that *Perry sound*. Now, in a strange turn of events, it seems Nora only likes the Generations tunes that have Deen intentionally emulating Perry. I don't get it. :?

RD, there is away to go off on someone and not. Cussing is one way, not the way I usually do my business. You can go off without cussing.

I could go off about what we were just talking abut, but it would do no good. I could go off on you, and it would do no good.

Go watch the kids in church reenacting the Nativity. All the meaning is there for them. At Toys r Us it's all about the toys for them, they're kids, but whether they realize what's Christmas is really all about is up to us.

Sometimes during the last few days before, I think it's all about how much cooking I can get done.

Nora gave it a fair shake and had both positive and negative comments. You guys are giving her shit because the report wasn't 100% glowing? What happened to respecting other's opinions?

 OK. Listening to part of the songs and skipping right through with the flourish of "NEXT!" is a fair shake....
The "positives" (gimme a fuckin break) are 2 Deen vox and a Neal voc. It was not a respectful "review" (preview would be more apropos) so it deserves no respect or credence wether the individual writing it thinks they are a singer or not.

You'll never get it, will you? It was just some first impressions based on listening to a minute or so of each song, not a review. I don't care if she listened to each song in their entirity then hated every song. Her "review" made it seem like some homeless guy on the street gave her a CD and she popped it in out of curiosity. That cavalier attitude rubbed us the wrong way.

All of us have criticized certain things about every Journey CD. Did you see our ratings of Frontiers and Gens in another thread? There are songs rated F and C, hardly glowing praise. But we know that our criticism is based on listening to the songs many times.

Even one genuine listen would not give someone a real impression of this album. Someone not willing to give at least one honest listen doesn't deserve to discover how great a big portion of this album is.
After one listen to this cd, my reaction was "wtf did I just hear?" This was my first impression after one listen to Frontiers years ago as well, as I was expecting to hear Escape part 2 I guess. Like Frontiers, Generations has grown on me to be possibly my favorite overall. There is absolutely no room whatsoever to criticize FITH, TPIYH (similar to a couple of Journey songs and sort of the sequel to SW but nothing like TWY by Foreigner imo), OOHM, or BTC for anyone that has appreciated anything Journey has ever done. Only if you have a Pery axe to grind or like nothing but ROR.

My only gripe with Generations is that, I wish Steve had more songs on it, or performed all the songs like on Arrival. If Steve did that, I would love Generations. If you take all the songs off Red 13 and all of Steves songs from Generations, that makes a pretty good CD.

I could live without Every Generation, but In Self Defense, Gone Crazy, and Deen's tunes kick ass. I think they add a different personality to Gens, a refreshing change from Arrival.

Cmon PF, you can't really be that naive to boil this down to "we don't like her review, we don't respect her opinions". The fact is, she did not take the time to form an opinion. She gave a first impression. I understand that a song might not affect a person or move a person right away...but she should have at least ridden it out. The review is an uneducation opinion....

As for the Xmas thing, I am not a particularly religious person, so we do tend to "buy into" the commercialism for the kids. We want to be able to give the kids whatever they want! We want to see the joy on our kids' faces on Christmas Day. But this year, given the finacial straights we are in, I htink the kids will realize just a little more about this time of year and be more thankful or appreciative for what we do have. Maybe it is unfortunate that we have to go through such difficult times to get a little closer to the real meaning of Christmas....but I do not apologize for wanting my children to be more than happy. And I think we have done a decent job with them, they do not beg for Xmas gifts, they do give us ideas of things they want. But they always seem pleased, no matter what we do.

And the biggest part of Christmas for us is family. I wouldn't change that for anything. This is the one time of year when we get everyone together and share. We are expecting 15-20 people for dinner, family and close friends. That is what it is all about for us!

Faith can be a hard thing to come by and I admire those of you who have it. I prefer to build my faith in my family. Without them I am not sure where we would be today!

I'm not particularly religious either Dave. We tried to raise our kids with the behavioral values that Christian beliefs teach, but we were never faithful practitioners of any particular denomination.(In fact, I have issues concerning organized religion, but that's another subject)

I guess what I was trying to do is agree with NIG that you make it what you need it to be for you. If you want your family to appreciate the religious origins of the holiday, you can make that happen. Our house is more like you described yours at Christmas. It's all about the family.

So she gave her first impression then. How about just leave it at that and say thank you very much but I have a different feel for some of these songs? Maybe ask her to go back and listen to certain things again, point out some specifics. Whatever! BUT Instead she is met with hostility and another round of this "must be a perry grudge" BS. I do not think anyone would have been happy unless she came thru with a glowing report, even if she had listened to each song 10 times on 10 days.

She didn't have a chance

Post after post, this 'Loon never fails to take top honors for sheer mind boggling stupidity.

PF- I have loads of friend in bands. I get demos/cds all the time. Some are really really intolerable. But, you know what? I always have the decency to listen to the whole album before making a judgement call. Nora didn't even do that. By her own admission, she did not listen to most of the songs on 'Generations' in their entiriety.
You honestly call that a "fair shake"?
