I guess I'm the 2nd type, too. I don't notice missed notes - my ears aren't good enough for that. If I hear a missed lyric, I cringe for them, but don't criticize it. I enjoy the music, the experience, all of it.

The earpieces allow for more control of the sound. I've heard some singers improved their pitch quite a bit after switching to the in-ear monitors. The band has a sound man that mixes the monitors so Jeff might hear his voice prominently and the rest of the band not so loud or louder if he likes and Neal might hear his guitar a little louder than the others etc. Much more control than the old on stage monitors.

Interesting.. Makes total sense, too!

I'm not a musician so I wouldn't hear imperfections the way I'm sure musicians do, unless it's just something really awful, which I'm sure I'd never hear from Journey, lol.

Funny though, in between bands I'm fascinated by all the equipment, wires, & the other TONS of things up there! Holy crap how do they put all that together & tear it all back down & pack it all away, & take it all back out & set it all back up.....over & over.....amazing.

And what does each member actually hear with those ear pieces in? Any musicians here know? I really do wonder how all that works!

:)

Melissa, you want to see amazing equipment (No Crazie Scarab, I'm not talking about what your thinking  ), get a hold of the Pink Floyd DVD called Pulse. Damn if that is not the most amazing stage & light setup I've ever seen! Must have cost an absolute fortune. I remember reading that they had duplicate setups of everything that would drive to the next show and setup while they were playing the current show!

What a show that was. One of the best experiences ever!

Thanks! I figured each member heard something a bit different & it had to help with control so they could hear themselves. It's amazing how technical it all is, yet they make it look so easy! :)

Unlike myself who can barely hear my friend TRY to talk to me (well scream actually) while they're playing, it's so LOUD!!!! And I LOVE it, lol.

Thanks for the explanation! :)

Now this is interesting for me, because I just bought Stree Talk with the additional unreleased songs on it. When I heard two of those tunes - "My, My, My" and "Don't Make No Difference," all I could think about was "These could have been Journey tunes!"

So, I guess for me, it's going back to this - Steve Perry's singing style and sound had a big hand in making the Journey sound. Anything else is really just a close second at best.

So, that brings me to this - when I go to a Journey concert, I expect to hear the music sound the way it sounded when Perry was in the band. He's not, so that sound is gone. Who knows, but maybe that's why my interest in Journey is waning.

My feelings are VERY similar to yours Fred. I'll reserve judgment for now though, as I'll be seeing JSS front the band in Moline 1 week from today. And I can't wait!!!!

Melissa, they hear a mix of the instruments and vocals so they can play in time with each other. JS your the one of a kind musician though, that actually cares about the music aspect 8) ...... i know lots of "musicians" most of them have to be told what happened the night before after 8pm,,, not saying they would be too intoxicated or anything  ,, these musicians show up,, ticked if they have to pay to get in,, heck they know the guy running sound for crying out loud,, smoked a bowl together the night before,,, ,, they show up with "yea,? SHOW me " accross their foreheads trashing the band the entire time,, "calling them pretty boys",, and "clapton can play just one note to get his point accross, and your guys has to play fast",, they are their just to meet young chicks and get away from their wives for a few hours.................  all written in fun 8)

I'm the kind that goes to enjoy what I paid to see. I stand with my arms crossed, look out around at everyone else, enjoying the show, listen closely to the new music, but not very critically. I just am there to have a good time, and mostly I do. There are always exceptions, but rarely do they include the band. Obnoxious fans are a bitch, especially when you attend the concert with them.

I can't stand people who go to a concert to scream and whoop it up, especially if the vocalist is someone I really admire and want to hear.

Yeah, yeah, yaeh. I get what you're saying and I agree...to an extent. I DO TRY to make sure I'm not drowning out the actual performer. I try to sing just loud enough to NOT ruin the show. I don't try to ruin anyone's show. THAT would be grounds for an ass beating.

depends on where i'm standing or sitting; if i enjoy it and am feeling great and i'm not in the way of someone just listening to the music then i'm screaming my head off and dancing. i don't mind having fun just don't want to be an assclown and stupid when someone is just wanting to llisten. given them their respect.

HOTS........
I was just telling you what I am like and being funny.
Guess my humor is lost on you, tough crowd.
Like you can hear someone screaming a song
over the tons of amps and speakers at
a concert....stay home if you want studio.
Concerts are for shaking ass and wailing pipes.

I didn't think I was asinine in my response
to you, just honest.
While I am loud and have fun at concerts
I am never rude or selfish and have never been
asked to sit down, shut up or leave.
Again, just my two coppers

Ms M I'll go to a concert with you anytime.

The last Journey concert I went to, these two (forgive me) "hippos" were behind me and all they did was TALK during most of the concert, or they got up and SCREAMED at the top of their lungs. Then, they went for more beer and came back and talked MORE and screamed LOUDER. Eventually, they got tired out and sat down and just stared. Yeah, that's why I paid $100 or more for two tickets, so that these two could drown out the band in my ear.

The problem with the Sleep Train Amphitheater in Marysville is that it is OUTSIDE (obviously) and because of that, acoustics can be weird and the sound can play tricks on you. I'm sure the sound had something to do with the two seats I had (though they were really good seats as far as proximity to the stage). The really strange thing was that I could actually hear the conversations people were having around me in spite of the fact that the band was playing.

When we pulled UP to the amphitheater and then parked, the music was incredibly LOUD and CRISP. You could hear just about every nuance! It was incredible. Then, we went inside and it was like someone put a muffler over a PA. Just plain weird.

I don't think there is anyone who can give the band the sound they had with Perry. That's one reason I've never been interested in seeing them without him. The other is that nothing about seeing Augeri interested me after watching the Free Per View. I am interested in seeing Jeff for his showmanship, but not to hear him do the classics. I want to hear something new. That's why I think they need to reinvent themselves and use the classics just for paying homage to the legacy. If that doesn't happen I might go to one show just to watch him perform, but I doubt I'd go to anymore than that.

I don't know what catagory of fan that puts me in.

Definately the 2nd type. I just love the concert feel and never really see any bad parts of a song unless it is serious! I an a Journey Concert Junkie. I have seen them so many times with all three singers and have loved every show!
