Guilty as charged, Marty, and I make ZERO apologies for it! I stand by my comment that BT is a complete and utter disgrace to Journey fans. I was a fairly active member of BT for nearly 6 years and NEVER EVER uttered a profane word on that site. Your assertion that CJ is this "fair" person is laughable. CJ was the only mod I ever received in email from on that site in 6 years. The jist of the email was that I shouldn't dare express that I don't believe "Generations" was Journey's greatest work. For the record, my exact quote that prompted Ms. "fair's" email was "Generations is the worst piece of Journey work I've heard". Nothing vulgar...Nothing profane, AT ALL! It was simply an opinion, and an honest one, at that!

I think it is completely unacceptable for ANY mod on ANY site to be emailing members, telling them what their opinions should be! What is the point of having a forum if people are being told how they should feel? I agree with Knox that any threads that are ever worth reading on BT are usually shut down as soon as one of the self-important mods sign on for a look. That site has turned into nothing other than "We love Stevie Awesome", "positive vibes", and "H2H". While on its surface, there is really nothing particularly wrong with any of those threads, they are mindless, boring, and contribute nothing of interest to most Journey fans. I mean...come on...How many freakin' threads do we have to read from 40 year old women in heat for a man in red leather pants? It's nauseating, and frankly, I don't want my children reading this nonsense any more than I want them reading some of the vulgar language on this site!

Finally, with all due respect Marty, I'm not sure any of us is buying into your "impartiality" claim. The reality is that you're married to one of the mods, and have just stated you have become a mod, yourself. I would say that is anything but impartial! That's like me bragging about how great the company I run is!

I have heard little good to say about BT among fans since tapegate and i fear the damage is done,at the end of the day the fans want to talk about and watch all things Journey if BT is trying to control that then people should go elsewhere i think. :?

When people mention "BT" they immediately associate that title with the General Forum. I've personally contacted the Mods and voiced my support in the elimination of that forum and the creation of other forums that prompt certain dialogue. They've actually recently breathed life back into the deleted forum for fan art so I must not be the only one voicing these thoughts.

The problem with the general forum is that by its name it suggests "anything goes". When people find out that that's not the case it instantly becomes discouraging.

If the intent of BT is to PROMOTE the band then delete the general forum. "General" discussion serves no purpose in the promotion of JOURNEY.

Really! That opening thing is so outdated. It takes a week for the audio to load. I've seen bar bands do much better w/that. Web sites had that kind of crap 5 yrs ago but it went out of style. I've seen homemade fan sites that are better than that thing.

Dinosaur...? Well, considering that JOURNEY is perceived as a dinosaur act then it's fitting to have a dinosaur site!

If they're not careful they'll turn into a FOSSIL!

The splash page is truly exhausting. It's a MISERABLE site in dire need of a facelift.

Your post pretty much said it all, during the tapegate scandel mods dismissed anyone who so much as thought it could be true, this did divide people. In a nutshell Andrew has just spent 4 days with the band and has some great interviews on the way. This never happens at the official site ...why? work it out people. When the band dont evan bother with the site it says a lot belive me.Its tragic how many people on there have no idea about what has been going on with the band and never will have, yet have the arrogant attitude they are part of the Journey camp. Fyre...

I stopped posting on that abortion of a site several months ago, so I can assure you that I don't take it personally! I simply voted with my legs and walked away in search of another place to voice an honest opinion! In terms of calling Generations their worst piece of work...It's an opinion that should be allowed to be expressed on a fan forum, if it is done without vulgarity (which it was!). Journey can still promote their band and their music, while still welcoming honest opinions from fans! These are not mutually exclusive concepts! If that site is really only in existence to have syrupy nonsense and no honest opinions, close the damn forums down to the general public, and let the genius mods post fluff all day long about how we should all hold hands and sing "We Are The World"! I think what you're (and many of the people on that site) forgetting is that we are all Journey fans. That's why we even bother to express opinions. None of us wants to say we hate Journey or their music sucks. That said, if they put on a less than inspiring performance or record a CD that some of us think isn't superb, we should be allowed to express it without some dopey mod telling us to go stand in the corner for 30 minutes for not kissing Journey's ass on EVERYTHING they do!

knox wrote:With due respect, that is another one of those "canned" responses. What is wrong with constructive criticism? Does it have to be all or nothing? Can we not offer ways to make BT more enjoyable to the masses instead of the same 15 people who post there regularly?

That means between MR and BT we must have ...ooh a total of at least 30 people posting regularly. I think both need to think about how to attract people to want to contribute, instead of lurking or occasionally whining.

I think labeling BT "The Promotional Forum For Journey" is being a bit optimistic and clouded in judgement. The site is nearly obsolete, hardly ever being updated with news, let alone even SOME SORT OF MULTIMEDIA. I have seen Bar Bands with better websites than Journeymusic.com.

I agree the site is a little stale in format. Technology moves on and eventually everything starts to look dated.

If you want the real story, instead of the canned "Official Statement", which most at MR know is generally worthless anyway, you come here. This site does more to promote Journey than their own website does.

Now, which of the 32 variations on the 'real story' are you referring to? The truth may be there somewhere, but its clouded in speculation and subterfuge on BOTH sites. As to promoting Journey, most posts I've seen here seem hell bent on tearing the band apart.

All I am saying is give the thing some life. Surely there is enough money coming in from the tour to hire a web designer to make it a much better place. Whoever is in charge now should have been fired years ago! Put some videos up of the current tour - even if it is from Arrival or Generations so Perry doesn't have to give his o.k. Do SOMETHING!!! It is not that hard. As is stands, it is a dinosaur of a website.

It wouldn't surprise me if there were moves afoot to do something like that. However, this sort of thing takes time to get right. I've seen many, many sites that look very flash to start with but become irritatingly complex to maintain or even navigate. I've always felt websites should be more about content than looks anyeay. However I take your point about putting up some visuals (video or photos) from the current tour.

MartyMoffatt wrote: CJ is one of the fairest people I’ve come across in this respect.

This is very true. I am truly impressed with her through our e-mail communications. She is one of the few people I've encountered on Journey boards that I would like to meet. Dean-O, Monker, Meanie and Ohsherrie being the others. NC and CPC too after having recent political arguments.

MartyMoffatt wrote: You would have to agree that MR is not a site suitable for children, and some of the xenophobic and bigoted comments make it an unwelcoming site for many others too. Probably around 80% of threads here on MR comprise in-jokes, vulgarity, baiting or open hostility between maybe a dozen posters. Some may live for that friction, and others enjoy the entertainment that comes from seeing individuals picked on, but many more don’t. Many people come here for the 20% of posts that actually mean something and are actually about Journey – you know, that band in the title of this particular forum.

I think your over-empahisizing the "negative" and under-emphasizing the "positive". The positive does make this the best Journey site...at least for now.

MartyMoffatt wrote: As to the Youtube policy, it is a management policy that bootlegs (including Youtube) are not allowed on BT. This is not unique to that site. Many official bands have similar policies on their official sites. Bootlegs are notoriously poor quality, and the band has no artistic or technical control over their quality. In addition, there used to be a culture of trading bootlegs for money and that is obviously not something anybody associated with the band would want to encourage. Youtube also enables illegal downloading of commercial content, for which, obviously, the band do not receive royalties. Maybe it is time to review that policy, bearing in mind that Youtube in particular as a means of distributing fan made recordings is a very new phenomenon. Not so long ago, cameras were almost always banned from concert venues, but this year they seem to be more relaxed about letting ‘non professional’ cameras in. However, it isn’t something the band or management are likely to be concerned about while they’re on the road.

I'm glad you are knowledgeable and open-minded to this. This is one of the places where Backtalk, the band and Management are just NOT working off the same page. It is illogical to have the lead singer - JSS - posting positively about boots and then having mere discussion about them being attacked on Backtalk. In the year 2007, which it soon will be, concert-goers should be able to post their review AND their photos+videos, as well as watch. It is what it is.

MartyMoffatt wrote: MR doesn’t have to conform to any management guidelines and people can and do post Yootube bootlegs here. That’s fine. I like to listen to them too, although I am surprised that so much emphasis is placed on them. I’ve yet to hear a bootleg recording of good enough quality to truly represent what the concert actually sounded like live, and of course they are rarely of a technical quality that comes anywhere close to a professionally recorded album track.

Except when the band allows someone to post soundboard recordings... that is :D Actually, any band can help itself out by releasing more live material. Everyone of us buys up anything they release.

MartyMoffatt wrote: I really don’t understand why there is always such a venomous animosity towards BT here on MR. I can understand why people don’t like the general ‘positive spin’ atmosphere there, but why is it necessary for certain posters here to continuously try to put the boot in? The anti-MR posts disappeared from BT a long time ago, so why do the anti-BT posts persist here, in the form of open criticism and/or sarcastic one liners almost every day. Why can't we call a truce and let each forum operate as it sees fit? Aren't we all supposed to be fans of the same band and music?

HUH? You just lost some of the A grade I was about to praise onto you. The anti-MR posts have disappeared? Really? When? The jealousy that some posters on BT seem to have towards MR is just ridiculous. They dis-credit the entire site when Andrew breaks a scoop sooner on something. They stick up for BT like its their dying Grandma. I believe even CJ finds this confusing. They don't want to take advantage of MR.....they blindy support years old statements from moderators like they are paid too.

Whether or not you buy into my 'impartiality' is of no interest to me. I am at least discussing the positives and negatives of both sites which is more than the one-sided stance you seem to be taking. I have no say in the running of BT, and mentioned my Mod duties purely in the interest of disclosure, not for any bragging rights. I am trying to be impartial, but of course I accept there will be a small element of bias. I openly admit that - however I sometimes feel there are posters here who are not nearly as open about their motives.

A big problem i see over there ,especially in the last year is the lack of individuality. Also, In any given week there are the same 3 threads at the top of the page day after day with maybe 10-15 posts a day, even Rich's H2H is taking a hit ,I remember when that thread use to have a huge following-similar to MR's what song are you listening to.
When i first went to that site it was full of info now its come to a standstill--theres a lot of disappointed people and it has an" invasion of the bodysnatchers" feel.

There are gonna be many panic attacks today, followed by some full blown myocardial infarctions next week. They just won't face the truth, will they. I think there are some who would go give Augeri a freakin bed bath every day if he would let them. Perhaps Jeff will step over and put his foot down again over there.

You are joking, right? Do you really think that today, 11/10/06, that it is hard to put together and maintain a website that is at least TWICE what Journeymusic.com is?

You don't surf much, do you? Take a look around, and you will see a miriad of websites created, maintained, and regularly updated by amateurs with limited funds.

Please don't pretend that Journey couldn't hire someone professional who could overhaul that site and make it great IN THEIR SLEEP.

If you really think what you posted then I am not sure I can take anything you say with much worth or value. I understand you have to have some sense of loyalty and diplomacy with you and your wife being mods, but please don't think that "Non BT Mods" don't have any sense or intelligence.

Yeah, I noticed that. If the usual history occurs, it will simply pop back up into another thread. Some are not going to let this one go. They think Steve is in an incubator getting the latest speed healing recovery meds. and should be back any day now. :?

True. I didn't have any real issue with your original post, other than it's covering ground that has already been done to death. My comments were aimed more at all the other posters who immediately jump on such a post to stick the boot in, and it happens any time the word BT appears in any thread.

Marty. I certainly am not trying to put the boot into BT. I joined that site when it opened, and was even a member there on the old site they had years ago. Was even a member of the old Journey Force fan club in the 80's!! I only wish the site would ease up a little, and allow people here to go there more freely, and vice versa. It appears some there simply will not accept what is now IMO undeniable proof that Augeri is out, and are now even starting to bash current band members because of who they hang out with in their free time. Perhaps some should wonder why they are hanging out with people from here instead of people from there. Likewise, it should not matter. Maybe they just want to hang out with 'normal' people, instead of the constant wiggles and lovefest. Hopefully one day both sites can merge, and be one big happy family. I don't forsee it anytime soon though.

What I don't understand is why they care that Ross and Jeff were there. It is easy to gather from a majority of the posts that a majority of the people over there resent Jeff for taking over for Steve. Why wouldn't he want to go somewhere where the people are supportive of him and have interacted with him? And they wonder why the band never posts anymore...

They are jealous because it was a get-together of mostly MR folks, not BTers. Jealousy.

Whatever, Why not be super Dick and make it 5,609 months you DON'T post here.

I am in favour of mending the fences and uniting the cause, but you are one sorry sack of flaming shit I want to see being left behind. Don't you have an official something or other to be waiting for?

Because Journey is its own worst enemy. They have a good singer now, thats true, but they have done a lot of harm to there base because of censorship and mismangagement at their official website, and they really have hurt and probably lost some fans because of it. Even if JSS sounds great, and he does, the fans who hang out here and at the other site are the ones who have the deepest pockets for Journey. If they just want to be a nostalgia act and rake in tourning bucks, why waste the money on managing a site that serves no purpose other than losing your fan base? Its rediculous what Journey does with its official website. It is without a doubt the single worst Journey site anywhere on the Web. Way to go Journey, you stupid fucks. Maybe JSS can knock sense into them, he has a decent site. I wonder how he'll like being silenced by stalinistic Journey. Welcome aboard JSS! :?

I have been on BT for many years. I have been here for many. I have walked the line between them. On BT I have openly criticized the band, the website, the management and the mods from time to time. For some I have received answers or explanations, for some I have received a certain amount of sarcasm in a reply. I have even felt very close to being banned for a time period where I was almost crusading for BT to fix what they had screwed up. Am I special? Am I the only one who can get away with it? I doubt it.

HOWEVER, in the last year BT has lost it's way. There has been a very large elephant in the room and they have been given nothing to work with to take care of it.

Knox made a very good suggestion that the band and management could stand to rethink their stances on some things. Like Marty said, YouTube is new. Journey is not exactly savvy in this digital age so they stuck by their previous model of thinking. When they released the Live 2001 DVD management wanted to remove the bootleg demand. They thought they were going to be able to give their audience the quality recordings they deserved. Turned out to be more difficult than that. But they had to try and remove bootlegs to create even more consumers for official product. They didn't understand that the bootleg fans would still buy the official stuff as well. After a couple years of the rule being there, the die hard fans on BT took to policing bootlegs and so the rule took a life of it's own. Then comes YouTube...a new way to share boots, and without money changing hands. That money was what made bootlegs illegal and it was the band's primary defense. So now they are using "creative or quality control" as their reason. They still do not understand what fans want. Finally, from what I have heard YouTube has made concessions to Warner (I think that is the company involved) to pay a fee for liscensing. So yet again 'legally' YouTube is staying ahead of the curve. Journey needs to get ahead of the curve.

If Journey were to provide these clips, ANY clips on a regular basis (much like Perryville does/did) you would see a positive response from their users. And the main site would certainly get more hits. If they had revamped the website to truly reflect Generations then they probably could have driven more sales. www.journeymusic.com is a promotion site for Journey. The forum is a bonus, but not specifically there for promotion. If you go to www.journeymusic.com you see very little promotion for Journey. And I have seen better MySpace pages than the site Journey has. We are talking 15 year old kids putting more thought into 3 pages on a free space than this band does. And they are changing them and modifying them, adding content more frequently...almost daily. Put one person in charge of regularly updating the main site. Every Monday there should be an update.

As for the mods at BT, I actually think they have a good group in place now. Most times CJ leads very well. I know John had a problem, but it appears to me that is the exception not the norm for CJ. Marty and Cathy and Sarah do fine. Miles is a bit long winded and toes the management line a bit much. Rusty...fits in too well with the love-fests. I think the main problem is that some of the mods no longer participate on the board, they only moderate it. Probably why I like Sarah, she still participates regularly. It keeps her closer to the 'little people'. The last problem is the psuedo-mod...those regular posters who feel the need to carry out the moderation of a post or thread instead of simply accepting that the mod staff can take care of things themselves. That grows into a mob mentality and THAT is when most of the problems occur.

(BTW, the thread that got closed for talking about a YouTube clip was closed because it had the link in the thread. it wasn't the discussion, it was the physical content.)

Very good thoughtful post jrnyman28. And, I want to say I am not trying to 'poke' the official Journey site when I speak of fire, mass suicide, and myocardial infarctions. I truly believe there is going to be shear meltdown there when/if the news is ever broken. Those who are hanging on to a miracle are going to fall off the deep end. I truly fear the BT forum may perish shortly thereafter. It is already pretty dismal now. What a shame. That used to be a fun place to play. Some there can also not stand the fact that Andrew gets the Journey goods first. Instead of coming here to get it, they just bitch, moan and whine unless it's exactly what they wanted to hear all along. What a shame.

They THINK BT is a promotion site, but I'll bet that stink hole does more to harm the band than anything I can think of.
