Not sure....at some point during the confused hysteria which was TapeGate.
Apologists for the band clung to it as an official refutation of Deano's wild allegations.

Yeah. Deano's wild accusations. What a rollercoaster ride. Deano says it, everyone fights, Augeri goes live & sucks, everyone fights, Augeri is replaced, everyone fights. There is one constant there. Everyone fights. Hmm.

Ok Susie, so now I am throwing around wild accusations. Got it.

For the record: I met up with Benson and discussed this. He absolutely told me I was full of shit. Shows how much he knows.

Hey I didn't say u were. I was laughing at the absurdity of anyone saying they were wild accusations. Well ok for a lot of people they probably did seem wild at the time. But all they had to do was listen to the proof.

U should have gone back to see UJ when SA was replaced & asked him who was full of shit then.

Thanks for those clips Susie. So far I've only downloaded Perry's "Wheel In The Sky" from the ROR tour, but I'm gonna give 'em all a listen.

I just wanna be clear on one thing: I'm not trying to convince anyone that Steve A's live delievery is better, even though I feel it is, and I'm not trying to turn anyone against Perry or try to alter their perspective towards him in any way.

I'm just pointing out specific examples of why I feel the way I do, and I readily accept and believe that since music is completely "in the ear of the beholder" that we'll probably hear different things after listening to the same song.

What I hear as "warble", you hear as Perry "feeling it" and that's cool.

What I hear as Steve A. being more "smooth" and having more "warmth", you hear as him "just singing" and that's cool.

That's what's so great about music. If everyone heard everything the same way, and had exactly the same opinion, life would get preeetty boring.

We're still friends and if we ever met in real life I'd give you the biggest hug ever.

And that's how I feel about everybody here.

Now, on with the friendly discussion.

You know, one way to look at this is that UJB has always been supportive of both Perry and Journey. He's been a friend to all of them. Maybe he just couldn't believe it could be true, or maybe he was just helping them try to keep it under wraps until they could do something about it. When he made the statement about Perry being in the studio and sounding great he had no reason to say anything about it unless it was true.

I can't get Yousendit to let me download any of the other files, so I'm gonna wait a little while and try again.

I do know that the ROR tour boots have been sped up slightly, like "Lost Angels" was, giving the effect of Perry's voice sounding higher in pitch than it really was on the night. It also makes the performances sound a bit tighter, which is why Led Zeppelin used it on a few of their songs. (No Quarter...there's more but I just woke up and can't think clearly :P )

I'm gonna bring the speed back down to the original level and post a a thing which I've been wanting to do for a while, which is make a complete song comprised of perfomances from Perry, Augeri, and JSS. Like, have one guy sing the one line, and then switch to another...that should be interesting. Might sound like a trainwreck, I don't know. lol

As to the Vegas dvd being doctored, all commercially available live product is. People throw the word Pro-Tools around like it's some magical fix-all, but it's really not. The fact is, there's no way to know for certain if Augeri's, or Perry's vocals have been pitch corrected or not. If you have access to the isolated lead vocal track, then it's a possibility. They had access to it for the Vegas dvd and the Houston one, and GH live, and the GH dvd. That's why there's slightly different mixes of the Houston songs on the GH dvd. They were able to use the multitracks to do that.

You can listen for a difference in vocal tone, as has been pointed out on this website, during "singing only" parts and parts where they address the crowd and say things like "C'mon!" and "Let me hear ya!"

If their voice sounds deeper or more raspy while ad-libbing those things than it does when singing, it's a safe bet there's been some fix-up work done.

To me, Perry and Augeri's voices retain the same pitch and character during the ad-lib adressing the crowd moments as they do during the "strictly singing" parts. So that's why I'd put the Houston dvd, GH dvd, and the Vegas dvd in the same category and compare them on their own merits. If it was glaringly obvious that one had more fix-up work than the other, that wouldn't be the case, but it's not. They're both polished, commercially available product and the only way you'd know for sure is to get an audience boot of the shows in question.

That's cool Jeremy. It's still friendly & I would give u a hug too. I would appreciate if u would listen to all those samples. They won't take long to d/l. Just listen. Hear Augeri live. Hear Perry live. Hear Jeff live. Then tell me what u think. If u still think Augeri is better I will give u no more grief about it.

Thanks Susie :) (e-hugs you)

I'm definitely gonna listen to all the boots you provided.

I've been looking for an audience boot of the vegas shows forever!! Is there any way that you could upload a couple of songs from them? I'm dying to hear them.

I seem to remember someone involved with the band (either AlienC or the Banana Allen guy...i can't remember how to spell his screen name) saying that they recorded audio and visual performances of the songs before the show (at the venue) "for sound and close-ups" i believe were his words, and then during the actual show "for sound and audience" and then mixed the two together.

I don't have a version of Jeff singing Faithfully. Except for 1 or 2 shows, Deen has sang it this tour. I'll put up a version of Deen doing it. He has a beautiful voice. It's interesting to compare these singers like this. If anyone has Jeff singing it, maybe they would put it up.

Perry:

1983: http://download.yousendit.com/5F6311917FE78863

1986: http://download.yousendit.com/24CAE29D69334871

Augeri:

Jesus...That 2006 recording from Augeri was actually uncomfortable to listen to! That's about as bad of a version of that song as I've ever heard. You could clearly hear he was struggling, mightily...even on the low notes! Too bad nobody can find a recording of Jeff belting out Faithfully with Journey! I'd really LOVE to hear that. Perhaps someone has it somewhere stored away in their audio vault. We can always hope!

I'm still not able to download the 1999 version of "Wheel In The Sky" but I was able to hear the others. Here's how I rank them.

Early Perry: - Great Job

ROR Perry: Sounds rushed, and is ever so slightly sped up (prolly from it being originally recorded onto a cassette tape) but - Really Good Job

Early Augeri: - Stupid Yousendit Won't Let Me Download

2006 Augeri: Obviously Struggling. Remeber when I was talking about the "warble" I heard in Perry's voice? Steve A. has it here. - This Guy Needs Some Rest

JSS: "Wheel" is one of my favorite Journey songs and you can tell that JSS likes singing it. - Great Job On Both Tunes.

It downloaded!! Thanks a lot!

Yeah, I still prefer Steve A's delivery. His voice is just more pleasing to my ears. A lot less vibrato than Perry live. More warmth and less shrill-ish. I like the tone of his voice better live. That's just me though.

I do think that most of Perry's studio performances were nothing short of amazing though, and a lot of his live performances were the same.

Almost forgot:

I did think that the clip of "Wheel In The Sky" from '99 was just as good as the Vegas version though. (Thanks again Susie, I don't know why yousendit hates me)

If u thought that 99 version was as good as the Vegas DVD then there is no point in me posting the boot of that song. U will surely say the same thing. I am surprised Jeremy. U are a musician. I expected ur ears to be better tuned.

Here's Escape a boot from that show. If u tell me this is better than Perry, I give up:
