Should Journey play any Soul SirkUs songs

No SS songs for the time being...Jeff should settle into his role as Journey's lead singer before introducing any "outside" material.

In a couple of years I'd be interested in hearing one SS song in the set...maybe...just because there is never enough time in a concert to hear all the Journey material I want to hear.

Just a little comment on this...
Not arguing but, you do know that
SS's failure had nothing to do with the music?
That was all politics.

Anyhoo, to answer the original question, I don't think
the SS stuff would be appropriate right now...
Maybe a few years, albums and tours down the road
but not yet.
However, and I've said this before, I think Jeff's
solo jam "Believe In Me" could easily be a staple in
a Journey set, not mention a killer single if the band were
to re-record it :)
Personally, I would LOVE to see Jeff do Sacred Eyes acoustic in every show. Just stick his ass up on a stool, give him a drink, and let him connect on a different level with the fans.

Great idea Catherine! Sacred Eyes is awesome. 8)

If it's true that Jeff said they would consider Believe in Me or Coming Home, those would be amazing! Do BOTH!! lol :)

I agree completely. :D I think Jeff needs to become established as the voice of Journey and some new Journey music needs to be introduced and accepted before any other music should be included in the concerts. Until that time, if they want to use the good SS songs, or Jeff's solo material, they should be rerecorded by Journey and given the full Journey sound treatment before they're played by Journey. IMO

Make it a new Journey tune and go for it. Jeff's ability to connect with the audience is impressive to say the least. I've said it before and I'm gonna keep on sayin' it- I'm so excited about Journey right now! 8)

If the band had a full 2 + hour set, why not throw in a Soul Sirkus song just for kicks to introduce Journey's fans to that kind of material? After all, Jeff was put in a position where he had to drop ongoing projects to join Journey on tour, so there is fresh material out there - especially songs co-written by Schon. The arguement that Journey never did a Tall Stories song is kind of moot, since Tall Stories was a long-past project for Augeri, who had closed the door on the music industry at that point, and no one else in Journey had anything to do with that material.

If Journey goes out and does another opening/co-headlining tour in 2008, then the set lists will probably be limited once again, so no room for Soul Sirkus material then...I see it as the 25th Anniversary of the Frontiers record, their biggest selling album, maybe it'd be cool to do another retrospective-type show promoting a brand new CD.

I'm beating a dead horse, but without Steve Perry none of the major players in the industry wants to touch the current band that is calling themselves 'Journey'.

Ive listened plenty to JSS, he DOES possess TREMENDOUS talent. Ink Ross & Jonathan and call yourself Soul Sirkus. Neal wanted this band to succeed before, why the hell not now?? If Neal, JSS & Dean dont think that Ross & Jonathan fit the Soul Sirkus idea then try..... The New Soul Sirkus, The Tribal Talismen, The Perry Loons, Neal's Diamond...... whatever.

Neal & Jonathan along with Jon Waite got a major lable for Bad English. They have 100 times better chance of succeeding in todays market by NOT using the Journey name.

If the current band went out by themselves they would be lucky to fill 3000 seat gigs in most areas. Someone out there has to be smart enough to figure out that the Journey name is hurting them now. Change the name and dont limit themselves to just Journey tunes.

Give JSS a chance of making a name for himself, instead of being the new mouthpiece for someone elses voice.

Consider the fact that Journey with Jeff Scott Soto has performed in front of nearly half a million people this year. You think that no one wants to touch them? I think they've got the attention of quite a few people out there. Are you going to hear Journey on terrestrial radio? Without Perry, the answer is a definitive fuck no, and with Perry, maybe a chance at a top 20 AC charting. But you can't discount the kind of promotion and excitement they've built for their live shows this past year. You won't see them selling 20,000 seats in the outdoor sheds by themselves again, but there's certainly a renewed interest in Journey with Jeff Scott Soto.

They played the Butts & Guts circuit. And were a warmup to boot.

If JSS has the chops give him a chance with a GREAT band. Dont saddle him with the Journey name.

This is not a slam on Augeri, but his departure will have zero effect on ticket sales. None.
By and large, the casual masses come for the catalog.
I really don't expect that to change.

Journey is a brand name that equals a certain amount of money, and that money will be made TOURING.

No band with members over the age of 30 (much less 50) is going to succeed as a start up act with a new name. You cited Bad English awhile back, but - what year was that? Ancient history and the music industry has changed. Some of you just don't seem to get that.

If you are older = "No hits for you!" PERIOD.

Now as for Journey playing an Soul Sirkus song in concert, that would be fine with me if it is something they would like to do. Hell, they did a Santana set in 03 (that I could have lived without). Whatever is in the setlist is their choice.

What exactly is the "Butts and Guts" circuit? They played the largest venues of their kind this past year, and yes, Journey was in effect an opening act, but Def Leppard couldn't have filled those venues on their own either.

True.

I'm thinking by "new excitement" I'm meaning that with Augeri on this tour, it would have likely been the last of it's kind for Journey. With JSS at the helm, I do believe there's a renewed interest and energy that can keep this band busy.

Let's not needlessly muddy the waters here.

Fresh or not, after Jeff was dicked around by Azoff Mngt. SS seemed finished.
Jeff even released a message on the official website saying as much.
Maybe he would have continued to tour behind some of those songs with Talisman or on his own.

I'm thinking a throwback to the Frontiers days of yore where they would play a HSAS song during the concert, or even on ROR where they did "Don't Fight It." Who the hell needs to hear Lovin Touchin or Who's Cryin Now or even Open Arms (who am I kidding - They are forever cursed to perform that song at every show). The point is if they had lots of time, it'd be something different to shake things up a bit, especially since Neal and Deen were a part of the project.

Butts & Gutts? I don't know what you are referring to here, but they played amphitheatres and arenas. Not just this tour with Lep, but previous tours as a headliner. Arenas/Amphithearters are as big as you get these days. The only people playing stadiums still are The Stones and U2, or maybe a Country Music Festival in Texas. Hell even Ozzfest (which I know has lost some steam recently) is held in amphitheaters now. And that has alot of young popular bands everytime around.

I just don't know what type of success you think a 30year old band that has no promotion or radio airplay of new music is going to have. If your not the Eagles or the Stones its just ain't going to be huge like the 80s. Even Aerosmith, still succesfull and popular, only play arenas and amphitheaters. There has been so much member turnover and hiatus time with Journey that I am quite pleased with the success they do have as a touring band. Where are some of their contempories from the 80s at these days:gone, big only in Japan, or back to hitting the club scene (not that there is anything wrong with that). Considering it all, Journey has done pretty damn well I think.

They ABSOLUTELY could get the promotion and radio airplay because Neal IS a guitar god ala Carlos Santana. Deen is a GREAT and fairly young drummer that can also sing. JSS is young, energetic , with a GREAT passionate voice and he possesses a good rock look.

Butts & Gutts means look around at the majority of the crowd. Outside of about 7 or 8 acts a Butts & Gutts act takes a minimum of two good acts to fill up an 8000 seat venue.

The players in 'Journey' COULD make it in today's market, if they would drop the Journey name.

With Steve Augeri no way. With JSS WAY.

Shi t, I am their biggest fan here. None of you believe they can make it without coattailing on their past Steve Perry glory. I believe they could.

Now, if they could only find someone in the music industry with sack enough and jack enough & stroke enough to prove me correct.

You obviously just don't get it or the state of the industry. Turn on the radio once. Melodic AOR rock does not get played. Add to that their age and it just will not happen.

They can make money by touring as "Journey". New music can and should be an outlet for them artistically but that it is not where they will be earning a living.

Carlos Santana is a different animal as he is accepted by the Rolling Stone hippie crowd. He is considered "acceptable". Even he though has burned out the gimmick of getting some current, hot act to guest on his albums.

Also, he is still billed as "Santana". Lets see him form a band under another name and see what he does sales wise.

Isnt that what 'Journey' has now with JSS & Deen to boot????

Nope.

They are two talented guys but they don't bring crossover power.

Rob Thomas brought his audience with him to get Santana a hit. Totally different.

Anything else you'd like to be straightened out on?

You are wrong. They could survive and prosper now with new material & a new name.

They have got the talent to make it TODAY on their own merits.

They way it stands now is that all they are is a glorified lounge act that will drift from shi tty lable to shi ty lable playing the songs that a different Journey made.

BUTTS & GUTTS tours until they call it quits.

It doesnt have to be that way.

I have merely presented the facts that you choose to ignore. Your comparisons of Soto and Deen coming in to Rob Thomas with Santana are ludicrous as they are not the same.

Others can judge for themselves. I think you will find yourself out an on island with your opinion.

Any hope of a "hit" single or CD for Journey rests with a Perry return.
Even that would be debatable. I think it would result in one more hit album and tour, but follow ups would not fare as well. That's the way reunions tend to work. Once the general public has been fed, they tend not to care as much after repeated offerings.

Neal and Jon know how to make money. Cash is spelled J O U R N E Y. Can't fault them for that. Dropping the name would be career suicide.

The great thing is now with Journey having JSS, is they have a new energy and it is not just going through the motions.

Looking forward to a stellar new CD down the line. It won't sell. But if it keeps them interested in music, that is the most important thing. Concert sales and T-shirt sales will keep them in business though. That is the way it is for virtually all veteran acts. The Stones don't even sell records anymore.

I agree 100% with your paragraph as to Journey & Steve Perry.

That is why they HAVE to make the name change. They could be a force today with the current lineup. The name is killing them.

I have spoke what I believe true.

As stated earlier I just wish someone in the music industry had the stroke, the sack & the jack to prove me correct.

I'm done on this topic.
