Yeah, that was 2 days ago....they say it could only be the coastline that stops the fire if hell breaks loose today!

BTW - In that image, that's top part of Tasmania in view...

Andrew,

Hope and pray that you all get some relief soon!!

I can't imagine having to deal with that. Let alone breath all that smoke.

Stay safe mate!

Rain is falling here in Tassie. 25 fires were burning, 1 house destroyed in the North of the state.

Both Tasmania and Victoria got a little lucky with the weather - very hot, but no winds, so in Victoria, they only lost 2 houses so far...but no rain there.

All in all, still underway, but much better than it could have been.

I spoke too soon.

THe rain did not penetrate inland and near hurricane force winds hit the state late yesterday knocking out power supplies, but also fanning existing fires.

Sadly I must report that 23 houses and a hotel were destroyed on Tasmania's East Coast (2 hour NE from here).
Victorian fires still burning frelly too - but currently without too much damage and cooler conditions.

Still going to be a long summer it seems.

Yeah, just about everyone does living here....but there are no fires in the greater Hobart region at this point. Still 3 months of fire weather to come though!

Last hairy moment for me personally was 1998 - had the car packed that night!

Stay safe Andrew and don't hesitate to evacuate if it looks necessary...

My family evacuated from Houston ahead of hurricane Rita about a year ago and we waited too long and were caught in the rush of people. It took us 8 hours to travel a distance that normally took us 45 minutes. And there are worse stories than mine, I know. Try to be ahead of the crowd if possible and make sure you have plenty of gasoline/petrol in your car.

Doesn't look good at all... :(

Hope you are doing OK,Drew.
Between the heat of the nature and the emotional heat of the Journey board, you must feel like being between a rock and a hard place.

Hopefully everything will end soon. :)

Stay safe.

Not much happening close to me. The whole city is covered in a smokey haze and it smells to high heaven...but no trouble here.

However, a bad day ahead for the residents of some East Coast towns.

I think there should be a limit on how much brush fire smoke there should be allowed in Australia. Perhaps the good ol' US of A can be of some help to ya all. Yeah. I think the California Air Resource Board and the Environmental Protection Agency could help you folks out bigtime! Hmmm.. Maybe they could mandate the Australian population to pay for the installation of Catylitic Converters on all bushes standing taller than 24 inches above the ground. It won't cost that much, and besides, you don't need the money anyways.. Right? And, if that doesn't work, I'm sure they'll think of other ways to suck money out of your pockets.

Aww.. summertime. Summertime is when the arsonists go to work around these parts. Is it arson that started the fires down under? I hope not.

When I was a kid, there was an occasional fire.. every couple years maybe. Nowadays, whenever it get's hot & dry, there's at least one fire, set by an arsonist. It's quite sad.
