It was all about Perry's vocals. That's what set Journey above the rest, and if Augeri had been singing in 1978 Journey would have been just another struggling band because he's just another singer.

and if that bolded statement is what you believe then so is JSS "just another singer".

Well, no that's not exactly true. Jeff is an outstanding singer. Augeri was average at best.

Neither of them is Perry on the songs that Perry recorded, but Jeff does a hell of a lot more justice to them than Augeri ever did and he brings something great of his own to them too. Something that Augeri never had, IMO.

I warned ya...

Postby 7 Wishes » Mon Feb 26, 2007 4:11 pm

...way back in 2001, I started posting a lot of messages stating that Fraudgieri was already tanking vocally. I came right out and said that Journey made a HUGE mistake by not hiring Hugo or Hunsicker as their new lead...and that was a toss-up...if any of you haven't seen Frontiers, by the way, do...and for those of you who never saw SP live in the 80's, you'll finally understand why us old-school hardcore Journey fans could barely tolerate Augieri. Anyway, a lot of you tore me a new a**hole for doubting SA was the correct choice...

"Hugo has a tinny voice!" someone would retort, without actually having ever heard one of his recordings. Yadda, yadda, yadda. Well, here we are, and the Journey legacy has been tarnished by tapegate. For one, I was done with Fradgieri's Jeri Curls and his fruity, hip-wiggling karaoke-lounge-singer routine. THANK GOD JSS is in the fold now, because if I'd had to listen to Augieri crucify "Send Her My Love" one more time I would have had to set a Q-tip on fire and poke out my eardrums.

I disagree with you. To each his own It is hard for any singer to sing the dirty dozen for 8 years, shit Perry didnt even sing that long without breaks in between. I thought he was right for Journey and so did alot of other people. You can only sing them high notes so many times night after night for so long, unless you 21 or a girl. The lipping was wrong ,I agree, but he was good for Journey for the first 6 years,If he was that bad, why would we be still hear talking about Journey?

Perry's vocal acrobatics during almost every live show I've ever heard previous to Frontiers, were other worldy... I like this clip, and think Augieri was at the top of his game here...still distant from Perry, but good enough to get it done.

That is Steve Augeri's voice - flaws and all.
Take it or leave it.
Just don't believe he is the second coming of Christ like the pro-tooled 2001 dvd would lead you to believe.
I think he sounds good here.
Dallas can't be released because it's tape, maybe Neal should throw the fans a bone and release this one instead.

Thats a good idea at least you could remember him as a live vocalist as opposed to mime. For most people when Augeri joined the only time (at least) in Europe we had to here him live was on the 2001 dvd which was good, though by all accounts doctered!
So here he is undoctered and live,so for me it was a chance to here him in the raw and i found his voice very week and it sounded like he was at the end of his game IMO. I did catch the Oakland benefit show a few years back which by all accounts was one of his last LIVE shows and he was pretty good but always lacked the strength of Perry.
What comes to mind is why go with a singer in his late 30's who is just getting by covering the songs but having to work his arse off when there are guys like Jeremy who sail through the songs effortlessly?

Steve Augeri's voice average at best????? That would be an opinion. Not fact.

I'm a big fan of all the incarnations of Journey and I don't think Jon and Neal would bring aboard an 'average' singer.

But then again, that's my opinion..... :D

Still he did keep the Journey flag flying which is no bad thing :) I dont think Jon and Neal would bring on an average singer, then again i didn't think they would let a singer with a throat condition not rest and mime shows..so who knows :?

I think good music is totally in the ear of the beholder. Just because the Augeri line up was good enough to make me a Journey fan without ever hearing any of the previous material, doesn't mean that everyone's gonna like that lineup or, like me, become a Journey fan because of it.

I prefer Augeri's take on a lot of the live material to Perry's, just like some prefer JSS's....ect.

We all hear different things that appeal to us differently...different strokes for different folks.

Can we not just let it go folks?

Whatever actually did happen (not gonna get into that), he's gone and they've got a replacement who seems to be popular.

What's the point in going over and over whether his voice was knackered years ago or not?

Sorry.
Any aspect of any member of the band is fair game.

Steve did a great job on this one. I can hear in his style of singing that when attacking the tougher (higher and more powerful) material, could have possibly damaged his voice if he wasn't able to adjust his technique.

I'm afraid of what might happen to me if I told you what I know about that video.

Puffy microphone.......

That one is very suspicious.

Augeri is though the only one who has ever sang that song live. I do not think this version is one of those instances though.

I think it is, when he sings normally, he moves the mic away when he pushes for the highs.

Exactly. Look at the post of Ask the Lonely which is live. Totally different way he handles the mic.

Some guy at work did something similar. We have these biometric time clocks where you have to type in your employee number and then place your hand on a flat surface which is scanned. The folks at work were complaining about it passing germs, so they put this liquid gelatinous hand sanitizer by each time clock. The major component of that stuff is alcohol. Well a guy clocked in, sanitized his hands with that stuff and then lit a cigarette. That stuff went up like it was gasoline. He had first and second degree burns on both hands. The pictures were grotesque looking.
