Kevin Chalfant's new cd

Now that KC's project is out,I think I know why I'm not so thrilled about Journey re-recording the classic songs...
I consider Chalfant's Journey CD as a kind of an homage paid to a band he admires and loves.

Now...Journey doing the same kind of project,re-recording the classics with JSS,that is,would seem like an attempt to alter their own history (legacy? )...

I love JSS singing the classics in concert, live, full power, etc.

I dunno,it's just how I feel about this as a fan of both old and new Journey.

Ultimately,it's the band's choice.

If the forces of evil had aligned and Bolton had been made the lead singer of Journey, my head would have literally exploded, or I'd have been put away for 35 years, because there is NO WAY IN HELL anyone would have allowed that balding lounge act to take the stage with the likes of Neal, Jon, Smitty, and Ross.

Scratch that, date was 1987 - So it was Jackson/Baird instead of Smitty and Ross. The feeling is the same though. HE was happy to have "Journey" as his backing band for the album. That said, NO WAY would Bolton have been the front man. It was more because Cain produced the Album, and the other guys were available.

Whocares,

You have a good post here. And to your point, I'm one of the folks that are very interested in what it will sound like. I was quite surprised when Steve got the job over Kevin. I agree with your sales note as well. This CD will have zero impact on Journey's record sales. It will be all incremental sales to hard core fans. I think the point of folks being pissed was that Kevin's CD may sound more like classic Journey than their current incarnation which, based on Journey's current support of tribute acts, would suggest they don't appreciate it. I seen Journey at the IL state fair a few years back. Chalfant and Two Fires were there doing a free concert there earlier in the day as well. Kevin did a few Journey covers and they sounded better than Journey did with Augeri singing later that evening. The results of Kevin's CD will be interesting in any case. I can't wait to get it.

L8r,

Aaron

But why can't some people accept the idea that it POSSIBLY is a chance to let the fans who have stated numerous times that they want to know what the Journey with Kevin would have sounded like? Kevin is in effect pleasing a portion of the fans that were/are interested in this idea. I seriously doubt (and could be wrong) that this is a calculated measure to steal sales away from the "Actual" Journey band, anymore than Michael Bolton in 1985 elluding to the fact that his last "rockish" album was him fronting Journey.

At Kevin's my space account above he talks about his new cd of Journey covers, and shows the art work for it. At last we can get a chance to here what it would have been like to have Kevin at the helm of Journey. Hopefully the songs will differ a lot from the re recordings of Journey hits with Soto. If not, I'll buy both :D .-ERIC

Has there been a commercial CD with Soto doing Journey songs, or are you referring to the various covers he's done over the years? I would like a full CD of that!

There is suppose to be released a commercial cd later this summer (?) with Journey and Soto redoing the classic Journey songs.-ERIC

Say it isn't so.....

Yep!!! Can't wait for it either. I was one of the few that want this done back before, and right after Arrival was done. But a lot of people was against that. Both journey's and Kevin's should be good!!-ERIC

BTW, Chalfant is an amazing singer with an amazing range...no one will ever duplicate Perry nor should anyone, he has his own deal & although he can probably imitate quite well, he's better doing his thing in the end. I love The Storm album, never saw him as a Perry clone though although the immediate comparisons were there because the band comprised of 3 main members. Perry was certainly more a crooner with the R&B vibe & I felt Chalfant was more a great AOR singer, maybe not so much with the Motown flavor. Kudos to his new recording, looking forward to hearing it myself :)

The first Storm song I heard was I Want You Back...in the first 30 seconds or so..I thought Journey had reformed with Rolie...but a little later I realized that it was just a Journey sounding band.
And Jeff would be right...he COULD probably imitate Perry...but he DOES put his own stamp on things. Even from the boots I've heard from The Storm (Anytime and Just The Same Way)...he does add a different flavor while staying perfectly in range. KINDA LIKE JEFF.

WHAT I'M TRYING TO SAY IS...I gotta check out the new cd.

And I said it 4 weeks ago. What's your point? And no, not because I have "inside" coonections, rather the idea was just so stupid that I knew in the end it would be voted down.

Shania, glad to see you've come around to my way of thinking...

Am I the only one that sees Chalfant's Journey covers as being a short of cheap cash-in (perhaps sounds more negative than intended), a way to sell more albums than he ever could with his own material? Despite that opinion, I'm interested to see how it sounds...
As for Journey, I think the live route is a much better option than the studio re-recordings would have been.

Nope, that's exactly what when I first saw this thread. It might be interesting to hear, but I won't be buying one.

I'm probably one of the few who's fine with Jonathan doing Rolie's parts in those songs.

Agree. I'm one who's very in step with past precedent like this.
Songs like Feeling That Way/Anytime and JTSW should have Jeff trading off with Cain, who would be covering the old Rolie parts.
Same as I'm in favor of sticking with that format on future dual vocalist recordings.
I can't get in bed at all with the concept some call for of having Deen cover a Perry part while JSS covers a Rolie.
Just never been the way it's worked. I'd keep Deen and exclusively Deen on a song or 2 per night and 1 song per album.

And why the hell NOT? Who was Rolie, Andrea Boccelli or something?
Cain's been covering the old Rolie parts since '98 and I've never seen ANYone bitch about it until last year.
Is it "we got rid of AugHackie, now we need to skewer Cain?" :?

There is NO precedent for a frontman/drummer duet.
