Damn! JSS coming in and puttin a smack on AR :D Jeff you must have cabin fever or something. When's the Talisman tour kick off? AI was an alright show in it's inception but has really lost a lot of credibility in the last few years. Reuben Studdard is where now? Livin it up at the waffle house maybe. Bo Bice? One album and gone. Justin Gaurini (who is my neighbor) Lost on the show, put out a fuckin shit ass movie with Kelly (only because he was bangin her at the time) Now he's where? And last but not least the little homo that could Clay Aiken. I believe he's back teaching special Ed classes. At least until someone asks him to do yet another Christmas song. Sterling credentials for the show eh?

Journey needs to steer as far away from this cluster fuck as is humanely possible. IMO

Whether you like the show or not or care to hear the contestants, you can't deny that Journey being
showcased on a show with AI's viewer numbers can only do GOOD for the band. That kind of exposure
doesn't come around often.

So you're neighbors with Justin??? Show him a pic from Journey's last tour and
ask him, "How come you didn't tell me you were fronting Journey now?"

It's pretty much the same show just with a whore judge, a fat bass player and a rude Euro fuck.

I have to agree with you Ed. I can't stand AI. (or any of the reality shows come to think of it) No doubt that it has spit out some talent singers. I think Kelley Clarkson has a killer voice. But I just don't like the premise of it. And I'm not trashing Paula Abdul but I'm not sure she is qualified to judge. I know she had a lot of hits back in the 80's but I don't think she has a good voice at all.

American Idol
Weeks of watching psychotically idiotic people make fools of themselves progresses into watching mildly talented assholes make fools of themselves. Paula Abdul sits on Simon Cowell's face.

Have to agree with ya Barb, I have only seen a couple shows this season and not impressed with any of the singers. I think they let a couple good singers go by keeping that Sanjaya in there. What made last night worse was that there is NO rock vocalists left on the show, so I wasn't impressed with any of the performances, except for maybe the girl that sang "This Ain't A Love Song", who at least kept the soul in that song. IMO probably the worst batch of contestants to be singing Bon Jovi. That could have been a great show with some of the last year or two's contestants instead. LOL and for Randy to compare that Phil guy to Steve Perry singing a Jovi song, was a real stretch.

LOL, but who knows maybe my Journey/Bon Jovi bar is set a little too high for mere mortals.  Have to check out Jovi's performance tonight.

Chris was on season 5 -- this season sucks ass. Melinda is the best voice they've got, but nothing I'd ever buy.

Carlitto, Yup he lives two streets over from me. He knows who Journey are because I throw all my cds at him to listen to. He was however under the impression that Perry was still fronting the band. This is exactly why I see a Journey appearance on AI as a no win. Huge viewership not withstanding, how does it benefit them if every a: doesn't know who they are because they are too young and b: If they do know, they think that it is still the original lineup with Perry.

The only logical solution in my opinion would be a massive ad campaign two or three weeks prior to the appearance so that the viewers are ready for Journey with JSS as the new kick ass frontman. And then Journey would need to play something brand new that would knock everyone right out of their fucking chairs. Not the tired old dirty dozen songs. Even us longtime diehards are growing weary of those (at least I am) Give me something new and fresh the bowls me over. I have no doubt that is what is on the horizon and cannot wait for it to arrive.

Dude, u realize u keep hitting the old 'race' card with every Guarini dig don't you? I know u mean well but your comparisons to me & Guarini racially isn't far off the Imus card...not all Puerto Ricans look African-American or Mulatto, to say I do is kinda insulting bro. This is not a diss on Mulatto's or AA people but I'm all Latino dude, & during last year's Journey tour, the hair was straight, not curly as it is now...sorry for seeming oversensitive on the subject, it just gets tiring over & over.

Wow. My 'joke' had absolutely NOTHING to do with race, skin color or any other ethnic trait.
I was strictly being silly with a 'hair-style' comparison. And not in a "Nappy-Headed-Ho" way.
Nuff said, though. The bad joke has run it's course and I won't mention it again.

Getting back to the subject of AI, my thing is that it would probably help mostly to sell Journey's back catalog, because those songs would be mostly featured on the show..UNLESS...the band performed a new song on the show! Like you said Jeff, I think it would be kind of an awkward situation, because Perry would probably be Randy's first choice for an appearance, but for a guy who doesn't want to be in the spotlight anymore, it really is a wasted effort for him to appear and not the actual band who is trying to once again, make a name for themselves. Does that make any sense?

At the risk of having what I'm saying misinterpreted, I'm gonna say it anyway. Image

If they were to have a show featuring the music of Journey like they have with the other celebs that they've had as "coaches" it would have to be Perry because he's the one that sang the songs that they'd be featuring. These people are singers, not musicians. It wouldn't make sense to have another singer coach them on songs that Perry's vocals are famous for.

As far as Journey appearing to market a new album I think it would be a great idea, but I'm not so sure about the coaching on the classics. Of course Jeff could give vocal advice and coach these kids and it would be invaluable to them, but it wouldn't quite fit the pattern of what they've been doing with the guest coaches and I'm not sure the producers of AI would see it as being as big a draw without the voice of the classics doing the coaching.

Jeff isn't known to the general public as the frontman for Journey to the general public yet.

It really is a no win situation for Journey at this time.

Perry could do the show without Journey easily enough, but it wouldn't do anything but promote the GH. No help there for the guys now.

Of course, Journey could go the INXS route. Just picture:

Rockstar - Journey

They could have picked their new lead singer that way. Competition between Jeff, Hugo, Jeremey, Kevin Chaflant, and some young up and coming unknowns. That is the one sure fire way Journey could have placed themselves on the national radar. Throw in the Perry question - maybe pay him to be a judge and you have a mega prime time hit.

INXS did manage to briefly sell out some venues on the tour that followed their show as well.

Yes, this is what would have gotten the band noteriety. Moreso than an American Idol appearance.

Leaves a bad taste in your mouth just thinking about something like that though doesn't it? However, that is a way Journey would have been right in the public eye again though. That is how the music business is these days if you want to get noticed beyond your current fanbase.

Not the kind of attention I would want to see personally. But it would have gotten them attention. That is the new era of entertainment, so to speak. The public eats it up.

as the newbie here - forgive me if I step on any toes!
I am not a fan of the show and not a real fan of people that want the easy road into the business when there are people like Jeff that have busted ass for years and have earned their place -BUT smart business is not selling out.
Fact is, that show has millions of viewers, fact is, that show sells records. Like it or not, love or hate - it's in the mainstream and it could only serve Journey well to be on there - as much as I cringe to say it.

Hey Carmen, who got you to come over here to MR?

Sorry, the way Journey is now, it cannot be possible. You can't have these "singers" belting out DSB, Faithfully, OA, SW, AWYWI, or WITS, and NOT have Perry there. I hate to say this, but it would work for Perry, but not for Journey.

It's hard to believe that Bon Jovi is 45. He has aged well. He must have led a good life.

Two will go tonight and my guess is Cris and Jordin.

Melinda has got to be this years Idol.

That is a good question.

I know he did for a fact last tour. Look and listen carefully. He could be doing the KISS version, where he recorded the songs prior to going on.

Fuck, now I have to watch this shit program to see if he lips.

Get your vibrators out ladies. I know Deb, and others will be buzzing right along to the songs.

I don't know, Ed.
I've heard alot of rumors that KISS routinely uses pre-recorded
guitar tracks in their live performances to "beef" up their sound.
It wouldn't surprise me if they've added vocal elements as well.

I know exactly what they do. There are some enhancements, but they are one of the least offenders in hard rock. Hell Gary Corbett played keys and sang backing vox on the Hot in the Shade tour. He wasn't visible on stage but it was no secret or anything. And certainly they never had a mime front the band for a full tour.

When I first heard of tapegate I didn't believe Dean and assumed all Journey was doing was the things I was already familiar with through Kiss. (Hidden keyboards, speaker cabinets only on stage for effect, etc).

Virtually all hard rock bands have some sort of vocal elements added into choruses live. Hell I saw Yngwie after Joe Lynn Turner left the band, and Turner's vocals were still all over "Heaven Tonight".

Jovi clearly uses backing vocal tracks...very obvious on songs like "Its My Life" and "Livin on a Prayer". However, lately they have been singing their new single "Make a Memory" which I'm sure they will do tonight. They have been performing it live on a number of different shows, such as the CMT awards and it's live vocals. I've never heard of Jon lipping the lead vocals though.

I can tell you unequivocally, that present day Journey uses NO Backing vocals whatsoever. None.
