Hey Deano...I'm curious....aside from Journey, Bryan Adams and Stevie Nicks...do you actually have a record collection? Or are you a typical member of the "older audience" described below in the Wikipedia entry for AOR?

"In Europe the term AOR actually has nothing to do with its historic roots; it is used to describe the music of rock bands that don't sound as heavy as hard rock bands and pay more attention to melody. It is also sometimes used as a derogatory reference to a sound aimed at an older audience who arguably have limited individual taste in music. Examples of that sound are...Journey......Bryan Adams...etc"

I can see how Slayer could do that to someone! It's funny, though - You can kind of get away listening to those kinds of lyrics at 15-16, but from an adult perspective, I've really felt bad listening to it so many years ago. Not good stuff, and I don't necessarily mean the blood imagery.

Funny thing about Priest, though - It was the music that would keep me up, the songs would just race through my mind nonstop, and I would be unable to relax or sleep!

I can kind of see that! I think that is the reason why i never really started listening to anything metal until I was about 17 or 18. Actually, the first metal album that turned me on to the music was Metallica's black album. It used to be with me that if I heard an Iron Maiden song or anything like that, I'd be like "wow that sounds so satanic!" I don't know if that is a good thing or not now, but it doesn't bother me as much nowadays, I'm just back to mostly AOR type of stuff now.

Even the satanic imagery doesn't bother me in a comic book sort of way, it was the glorification of Nazis that really turned me off....

Technically a good singer but emotionless, in my opinion. The only song I really like listening to on the debut is the instrumental, "Ytse Jam".

My fave off of the debut is the final track,
"Only A Matter OF Time".

Here's aquestion for ya, Dave.
With DT, who do you prefer:
Kevin Moore, Derek Sherrenian or Rudess?
Me, I'm a Kevin Moore guy.

I would probably choose Moore, though Rudess is certainly the better player, technically speaking. With Moore, the keyboards took more of a back seat. It was more for textures than a lead instrument like it is with Rudess, with the possible notable exception of "Train of Thought", which is right up there near "Images and Words" and "Metropolis: Pt. 2".

Yeah, very blinkered view. I find it impossible to be so narrow minded as to only appreciate a handful of artists? There are metal elements of Schon's playing and Castro is definitely a metal drummer, he could jump right into Dream Theatre etc.

I got dragged to the first Monsters of Rock in the UK in 1980: Saxon, Judas Priest, Scorpions and Rainbow amongst others; fucking awesome, got me right into metal. Still love MOR Journey, Boston, Kansas blah blah. Adore Bryan Adams, seen him probably 10 times from 84 on. Got dragged to a night of progressive euphoria trance with Oakenfold and Van Dyk; a glimpse into another world. You gotta love it all!

Top 5:

Queensryche - Mindcrime
Judas Priest - British Steel
Michael Schenker Group - Michael Schenker Group
ACDC - For Those About to Rock
Gary Moore - Corridors of Power

It looks like it's out and I'm embarrassed to say that I wasn't aware of it. I knew they were working on a new album but had forgotten that it was due out fairly soon. Anyway, it's called "Systematic Chaos".

Even the satanic imagery doesn't bother me in a comic book sort of way, it was the glorification of Nazis that really turned me off....

Except their most notorious song about the Nazis - Angel of Death - is one of the all-time great metal tracks, I reckon.

As for the lyrics...well, Slayer always argued that Angel of Death was simply a 'documentary' of Mengele's crimes rather than a glorification. Except they did seem a bit confused about it all. On the one hand they seem to admire him - "a sadist of the noblest blood" - and on the other they condemn him by saying his crimes were "a sickening way to achieve the Holocaust." As if there was an unsickening way to achieve the Holocaust!

Oh...I don't know...probably best not to read too much into such a bone-headed song or to take any of it seriously - but the music is superb. And what a drummer they had in Dave Lombardo.

Monsters of Rock was something else, wasn't it Marc? I first went in 1984 and what a line up that was too...Motley Crue, Y+T, Accept, Ozzy Osbourne, Van Halen and AC/DC. Great stuff.

Me too! I got given a Ecstasy tablet for my birthday back in 1990 and we all went to a trance night...and I saw the light! For about a decade I never looked back. My rock records just gathered dust. But the moment I sobered up...then back came the 80s AOR...and it sounded great all over again. :)

Angel of Death IS one of the greatest metal songs ever. The whole Slayer mystique they presented though, with the "satanic wehrmacht" Nazi symbolism was a deliberate appeal to that culture. I appreciate the music and Tom Arya's vocals, but the lyrical content is morally appalling.

Do you think it was an appeal to that culture? Or did they just borrow from that culture to shock and provoke in the same cartoonish way they used the satanic imagery? I agree though that the satanic stuff is much easier to laugh off. Although Dave might disagree with me.
