This is not a Perry bash. Time is just going by too fast, and this makes me feel even older. I feel really bad for the guy - the best voice ever (in my opinion) only to have it sound like sand paper later.

Are you shitting me? Have you actually LISTENED to Trial By Fire, FTLOSM, or the boots from the FTLOSM tour? Sandpaper? Give me a break.

The Only The Young clip was in context of a Live show....you have to put yourself back in the day (you may or may not have, so I apoligize in advance for assuming here)....Journey was huge....huge...the energy of the evening was extremely high, there were typically 30,000 screaming fans (thats's the indoor concerts...outdoors were 70,000-90,000 fans) and most songs they performed were increased in tempo just feeling off the night.

I've seen Journey live from Infinity to ROR...several times each tour...and the one thing I still can't believe to this date is how insane Perry was. Having the highest expectations from the studio recordings...he even blew that away in a live setting. I didn't think that was even possible....but he did....every fricking night I saw them.

Obviously there are some nights he's tired...not feeling well, etc. But like someone said earlier, this guy on his worse night is still unbelievable. Keep in mind, Perry's at this time is in a league all by himself, he sang for the crowd and for his own personal approvals ....some songs he would get caught up from the feedback of the fans, standing on their feet....cheering....screaming....singing along....

I'm sure if he saw that specific cut he would say, "sure...that wasn't a clip I want to be judged on...but that wasn't the intended purpose"

My point...I saw him on the ROR tour...and that clip (although great) wasn't a fair assessment of the performance I saw during the ROR tour. And I remember it like it was yesterday. Why? Magic! (I did miss Smitty big time though)

I've always been a fan of Perry's melodic tone and soulfulness over the aresenal of high notes.

Just my blabbing thoughts

This isn't Perry's best live vocal by any means but it's still a high energy performance from the band.

Has to be said though that Journey have never done justice to Only The Young live...whether it's the ROR tour or any of the tours since Perry left.

I think Perry set the bar so unbelievably high on the studio version - in fact, it's my all-time favourite vocal from him - and every live version I've ever heard has fallen short.

Knox - there are still some great performances from Perry on the ROR tour though. Have you heard Take Me Back To Ohio? That's as spine-tingling as anything from the previous tours.

My thoughts exactly. And why in the crap are we comparing it to PATIENTLY?

That video is a BALLAD that Perry was crooning out, while standing still on a fucking tv show.
The other one is a faster than crap rock tune with Perry on a real stage running around like his ass is on fire.

Hardly a fair comparison. You want to compare show-opening rock songs, compare it to Escape in '81.
AND THEY'RE BOTH GREAT.

Oh good grief. It's a good thing all of us are not put under a microscope, examined, and dissected the way this band is, I dont think we would last as long. If this is an example of one of the worst performances by Perry then it just goes to further prove what an amazing talent he was. Amazing, but after all, only human, not a machine. 8)

A great, high energy performance! I can't say I really dig Perry's extra beat there in the verse that he throws in, but I loved the way he took everything to a different place live. Perry's voice during ROR was at it's peak, in my opinion. It's a shame the emotional trauma he was experiencing took it's toll physically as well, but fuck - Could you imagine running two marathons a night, 4-5 nights a week for 5 months straight?

A. I never said the guy didn't have incredible energy.

B. If you think that this performance is on the same level as Escape from the '81 DVD, then we are definitely on two different pages. Perry singing Escape live in '81 blows Only The Young in '86 off the planet.

C. I didn't realize what I started when I wrote this. But, at least there is SOMETHING going on here worth talking about again, right?

Haven't heard it... I love the song, though. I think Perry sounded good in the studio on FTLOSM. I especially like the word he carries out toward the end of Somewhere There's Hope ("No One", I think...).

I even like the Studio sound of Trial By Fire - Just The Rain, Easy To Fall, Lion, and When You Love are my faves. Also, I go against the grain and like Baby I'm A Leavin You. This song reminds me of the beach, a woman dancing in cut offs and a string bikini top, tropical drink in hand.

You can download the live version of Missing You for 99 cents on iTunes, Knox! It's probably even better than the studio version....

The Hell you didn't. There is nothing wrong with that vocal. It's different than 81, 02 77, 0r 83 or 96 or whatever.

Stupid fucking post. Absolutley fucking stupid.

But, at least there is SOMETHING going on here worth talking about again, right?

We were doing fine without this garbage. Yes it's slow times here, but a thread like this serves no purpose. You just gave those Loon Bitches a reason to come in here.

Oh, well then maybe he was just warming up or maybe he was not feeling well.
