I'd say you hit the song about as well as Augeri did. That being said, I didn't think Augeri had the talent level to be in Journey. JSS has better pipes than Augeri. Just more sophistication in his delivery (which comes with the better chords).

Don't get me wrong, you're hitting the notes, but it feels lifeless. You have no vibrato in your delivery, no subtle feathering to your vocals (like perry). Just hard, on point notes. I'd cheer for you at a karaoke contest or in a cover band. But being in Journey? Sorry brother, it's just not there. They need someone with some serious vocal talent to front that band or it's over.

Sounds harsh in the written word, but I'm not trying to slam you. Just being honest.

Man does he know how to convey them through his voice. Listening to sweet and simple just rolls my joint ! Wish there was a karaoke track of that one because I would love to take a stab at it now that my voice is getting back in shape.

I couldn't agree more...

Steve Perry IS Steve Perry... just like Ryan Chistopher IS Ryan Christopher...

I just hope I did the songs enough justice to keep ANY member of Journey from holding their ears and screaming... LOL

And THIS is EXACTLY what I was looking for... Constructive Criticism... Thank you for sharing your opinion...

And I agree, the "subtle feathering" and "vibrato" are two things I am working on...

Just for the record, I've never had a vocal lesson in my life... what you are hearing is years of tested and tried experience in various cover bands from Top 40 to Alternative, to Classic Rock, to Journey tribute... I have a lot of work ahead of me... :)

Although, I also believe that a lot of the delivery of a song has to do with who wrote it... I can't hold a candle to Perry because those words he's singing are straight from his heart... A good example, to prove my point, is to go back and listen to the music that Steve Perry didn't write and simply performed. It too is lacking, from that emotional delivery standpoint... imo.

Again, I appreciate your criticism and hope to improve as time progresses... Perhaps with future recordings, you may change your mind...

Thanks again!

Dont take that last comment too much to heart. You are better than the singers in a shitload of bands out there making it big. Journey fans are all insane and suffer from OCD and like Rush fans they notice every little nuance of everything. If Ross farted on stage during Chain Reaction someone would write a review of the show and then a review of the fart !

if you want to be considered, then the first thing you have to do, is stop communicating with us, and not post at all on this forum. (you'll figure out what it means)

Oh, I understand where you're coming from... although I come from a different 'school'. I've never been a 'holier than thou' type and if joining any band (pro or not) means screwing over family, friends, or fans, I'm not interested... and I'm not afraid to communicate this.

Lead Singers need more than good chops in a band... they need heart, soul, conscience, and devotion...

I enjoy this site and it's opinions but I can handle RAW opinions and it gives me perspective on what fans of Journey are looking for...

Thanks for the reply!

np, I'll have a listen to the songs in a bit. But i trust that if a few other people here liked them, that they must be decent.

And even if they aren't (in your opinion), don't be afraid to let me know...

I'm open to all criticism... you never know what you may learn about yourself...

But I don't take ALL of it to heart, only the views that I find are shared among the MANY or those that I've seen while looking in the mirror and reflecting... :)

ok, so after listening to Oh Sherrie and Seperate Ways, Admittedly on low(ish) volume, because i didn't want to wake my daughter, I'd have to give you props for doing a damn fine job. I wouldn't audition for the band, if you wnat to keep your dignity and or voice, but good job. Will listen later when I can crank it up louder.

Thanks WC! I know the routine, btw... when my daughter's sleeping, I have to pull out the trusty headphones and resist 'singing at the top of my lungs'... :)

I'm looking forward to your 'full-volume' review... :)

   :!: :!: :!:

Actually go record this with Nora's lyrics and post it here!!!!!!!!

"Lame Reaction" (to the tune of "Chain Reaction")

I bet you, Neal's the one
'Cause now his, Band is DONE
Those changes
He puts you through
Down 3 Singers?
Oh Man, they're SCREWED!

I bet you, Frig likes to say
"Make phone calls? Not me; NO WAY!"
He's not sure
If the Band is done:
But, Steve Perry sang "Lights";
From Journey, he runs....

Lame reaction, to Singers with Passion
They won't surrender, or lose control

So now it's, not a mystery
Jeff Soto is
Their latest casualty
They mumble, "You'll take the fall
Just like the last time
But, maybe we'll call..."

In motion, it's on its way
Neal wants The Spotlight;
Somebody's got to pay!!
Those changes
He puts you through
Down 3 Singers?
Oh Man, they're SCREWED!

Lame reaction, to Singers with Passion
They won't surrender, or lose control

Lame reaction, to Singers with Passion
Jon's "The Friga"
And Neal's "The Fro"

So now just where will they go?
Tell me where

Down down
down down down down down down down down down
DOWN!!
DOWN!!
DOWN!!!!!

Lame reaction, to Singers with Passion
They won't surrender, or lose control

Lame reaction, to Singers with Passion
Jon's "The Friga"
And Neal's "The Fro"

I think you sound good enough to audition for sure, I like your voice. You sound a bit more like Augeri than Perry--the strong version of Augeri from his Tall Story days, not weaker one who fronted Journey for 10 years. To be honest, to me its more important what you sound like doing your own songs to hear what you could bring to the future music rather than just doing a decent job covering the hits. Do you have any samples of your own stuff?

Nice, dude.

Wanna come sing in my band? I've been looking for 3 years in Chicago for one non-geezer motherfucker who can actually sing like a rockstar, and all I've found is crappy indie rock.

Ryan I think you have an incredible voice. I doubt that Journey is open for auditions, but don't let that stop you from finding a place to use your talent. The way Journey has been going, there are much better gigs out there for someone who can sing as well as you.
