Not to mention a few less teeth...

Our 7 year old daughter has recently expressed an interest in playing soccer. I'm not sure why, and she'll probably get over it soon, but we're gonna sign her up for the youth league this year. We don't currently have a soccer team at our high school, so I don't see it going anywhere. We don't have hockey here either. We stick pretty much with the basics: football/volleyball, basketball and baseball/softball. My favorites I guess are college basketball and college softball. I suppose I need to start getting familiar with college football too as my son hopes to play somewhere in a few years. Anybody know any secrets to getting recruited??

Sorry, I just don't believe that.

Also, hockey IS worldwide, more so than football, baseball and basketball. Hockey is prevalent in Sweden, Finland, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, Russia, Czech Republic and of course Canada. The NHL has more international flavour than any other sport.

*cough* You are joking, are you not? *cough*. That's nine countries, including the US. Meanwhile, the 2006 World Cup was watched in 213 countries, and is actively played in ALL of them. And basketball has more teams competing in the Olympics that Ice Hockey.

I know many people in the US don't recognise anything that happens outside of their borders, but as a Canadian I thought you were more worldly wise than that Deano.

Marty, when he says hockey is more worldly than football, he means US football.

Oh it's on now Marty.

Dude, seriously, a bunch of yahoos walking around, sometimes running, and sometimes standing still, is fucking retarded.

I made a comment about hockey being global and you missed it. Look at the NFL, NBA and even baseball. Hockey has players from SWE, FIN, GER, RUS, CZE, SUI, Latvia, Canada and the US.

NBA might have a few Germans, and a few Croatians. and an obnoxious Frenchy.

MLB has Mexicans, Peurto Ricans, Venezuelans, Japs and maybe a guy from Guam.

NFL has guys from the US, Canada and a couple gargantuan Somoans.

You are wrong on that comment.

Also just because 260 million people(I won't refute you, because you are standup guy and I believe you), watch a World Cup game, doesn't make it any bigger than the Super Bowl. Ask anyone here who the reigning Soccer champ is. Aside from you and Beshad, no one will answer correctly. Can anyone answer this? Ask anyone here who the Super Bowl, Stanley Cup, World Series and NBA champs are and they will most likely know.

I am SO happy the US and Canada suck in soccer. Keep that shit off my television.

It's that parochial view again summed up in that last sentence. Outside the US and Canada I suspect very few people apart from sports statistitians know the answer to your second question. A much greater number would know the about the World Cup champions.

This is another of those issues I'm afraid we will just have to accept we'll never agree on.

No. I am 100% right on this. I am not an isolationist Marty, and I do believe the world should know no boundaries, BUT...when it comes to soccer, it is laughable. It's a junk event that takes up time and by the way, I just love how soccer fan is so passionate, that he feels the need to riot after a match. A hockey fan, baseball fan and football fan is every bit as passionate and can drink as much beer as soccer fan, but you never see NHL, NFL or MLB fan's riot.

Oh I am so enraged writing this, I want to go punch a Mexican soccer fan for the Hell of it.

The world get pissed at the US because a lot of us know very little about what goes on outside the borders of our country. It never occurs to the rest of the world that we couldn't care less. We're a self contained, self supporting country, with the exception of oil. We don't need to venture outside our borders for anything pertaining to art, music, sports, food or theater. All of our products in those categories are the best anyway, with the possible exception of art. No disrespect intended to Marty or any other person foreign to the US, we just kick major ass! :D

See Rick, I don't feel that way. I believe that the world is important and that we DO need the world and also it is important what the world thinks of us. The United States strength is it's allies. The last thing I want to see is this thread go political, because I am enjoying bashing soccer fans, and winning, but I am game. I have all afternoon to brawl politics. Where are those close minded conservatives at? I will slay their asses.

Jim Rome= Legend. I used to call his show daily, (800) 636-8686 ( I ahve in embedded in my brain), and if any of you see a resemblance in my writing to his speaking, you'd be correct. I love Romey.

By the way, did you see all the soccer players falling down when no one else was around? And being carried off via stretcher? Pathetic.

Thanks AR for the backup.

PS- Larry, Mexicans here in LA would come up here to the Rose Bowl for a "friendly" with the USA team. Of course, the Mexicans living here, some if not most illegally, decided to piss in Ziploc bags and chuck them at our US players. Nice touch.

Just say the word :) Seriously, your comments about soccer and LA are classic.

Regarding Jim Rome. I don't hate him nor like him, frankly I can care less. He's a talented and wildly popular sports broadcaster so I give him props for that. Anyway, here's my favorite Jim Rome clip:

Don't soccer fans usually have stampedes in the stands and crush each other to death? They have huge fences (in some stadiums) to keep the fans out of the field and from killing the officials.

Why would you watch a sport that requires 3 hours of endless running and ends up 0-0 or 1-0? Total bullshit of a sport.

Hhhhmmmm....Canadian football league? NFL Europa (even though this was it's last season in operation.) And the NFL will be playing regular season games outside of the US this coming season and seasons to come. Sounds to me like there is plenty interest in American football outside of the US.

MartyMoffatt wrote:It is a mystery why, of all the countries in the world, it seems it is only the US (and maybe Canada) that doesn't have football as one of its most popular sports. I'm sure that if you were able to play it to a level where you had a chance of actually winning a major competition its popularity would suddenly soar. That time will come as, despite your best efforts, Dean, to prove otherwise, the sport is slowly growing in the US, and your players are getting better. Beckham's presence will only help that, as he is a world class player, even though he's at the end of his career.
Marty

And again. Any reason why soccer might become more popular in the US than what it is now is because of David Beckham's sex appeal. Sure, he might be a world class soccer player, but if he was ugly as sin, his coming to america to play soccer wouldn't be news to anyone.

The reason there is so much violence in soccer crowds is because it is the most boring thing to watch on earth. The ONLY interesting thing that happens are the crowd throwing buckets of piss on each other and the riots. The NFL blows away anything else.

Our country is the the only place on earth I'd want to live. Ok, maybe Canada or Australia. Yes Bush is an asshole, but overall the rest of the world still owes us a debt of gratitude. WW1, WW2, we bailed everyone's sorry asses out. If terrorism breaks out in Europe on a large scale who do you think the Euro's will come to for help?

The French are pussies. That always needs to be said. I'd still like to fuck a French chick though.

Oh also, Islam is a gutter religion. The Middle East needs strip bars and alcohol. Drop a fucking TGI Fridays and Scores gentlemen's club in downtown fucking Baghdad. That is what I would do. Fucking women covered up and can't show their titties, hell I'd blow myself up too.

We should have dropped pictures of naked blonde chicks and cases of beer in Iraq, not bombs. Maybe parachute in some hookers.

My son's quarterback coach, in addition to coaching at the college and professional levels, also was a coach in Europe:

McGregor has extensive coaching experience at the professional, collegiate and secondary school level. He spent the past three years as running backs coach at Boston College under former Eagles' head coach Dan Henning. McGregor was also an assistant under Henning with the Atlanta Falcons in 1986. More recently, he coached professionally in Europe as head coach of the Berlin Fire and the Helsinki Roosters and he was also an assistant with the National Team of Finland in 1991. McGregor also served as an assistant coach of the Albany Firebirds of the Arena Football League in 1990 and as head coach of the Richmond Ravens in the Continental Football League in 1987 and 1988.

This is from an old interview, but it shows that there is interest in 'American Football' in other countries.

Soccer is popular worldwide because yoou don't need anything execpt a ball. Most kids that grow up with soccer are in impoverished nations. Not ALL kids, but most kids.....you just need a ball.

Most kids couldn't afford american football equipment, or baseball stuff.

And I second Dave's emotion......BORING.

But I WILL say this. I've added up the PLAYING time in american football. The players only play around EIGHT to TEN minutes a game(per team). The rest is the time just ticking away. This, to me, is BORING, as well. Imagine getting paid 10 million a year for just 160 minutes of playing time?!
