I have small, square hands and my fingers are pretty stiff, too - as is my wrist. I really haven't played much in the last few years (too many children to look after!) however, I find that I have to move my thumb around a lot in order to get the proper positions for my stumpy, stiff fingers. For me the most comfortable position generally is with my thumb pointing stright up to the neck. I don't know if this practice has been discussed here but it works for me.

If it works for you then technique be damned. That position would make it difficult to play certain things, though, like bar chords.
