Leave the guy alone...

Postby roknroseville » Sun Oct 21, 2007 7:01 pm

I can't understand how JRNY fans can bash Steve Augeri??
The guy stepped in to refill the spot of one of the greatest & most beloved singers ever!
He perform for 8 years at least 500 - 600 shows released 3 cds & this is the thanks he gets...
I'll take ARRIVAL over TRIAL BY FIRE anyday...
When he chooses to release a solo or Tall Stories cd I will get it!
Same with JSS & JOURNEY...

PS
Anyone see the article in BLENDER magazine this month on JOURNEY & DON'T STOP BELIEVIN?
All this press & what are they doing with it?

I never cared for Augeri because his voice was always stressed. He never sounded comfortable singing the Perry songs, but rather like his throat sounded on the verge of cracking - which it did from time to time.

I understand he was a nice guy, but his voice didn't have that "stand out in a crowd" attribute to me. Very generic.

Of course, this is very subjective, and I am not bashing Steve himself - just stating the fact that I never liked his voice - Tall Stories or Journey.

Soto? I LOVED his voice in Journey. And he had the stage presence that Augeri didn't. Where Augeri had no stage presence or energy, Soto owned it.

Of course, there is nothing that compares to Perry from 78 - 81.

You both talk as though Augeri 'came up' with Arrival...and that he helped Journey out the kindness of his heart like some aid worker in Africa or something.

This thread isn't about bashing Perry either.

Many like Trial By Fire and many like Arrival. Some of us like both, as each singer stands on his own merits on the albums.

back to the topic of the thread, "Where is Augeri". Probably enjoying downtime with family and friends and working on his solo cd. :D

Hey Journey69! Don't be knockin the man now!!!!Yes AR is good but TBF is good also maybe not as good.Mr. Perry as you should call this man was and is the voice of The Journey. He is the voice that got them to their world acclaim. Now Mr. Augeri, yes he was able to keep Journey going on and on and on.I will under no circumstances put this man down.I have been told by a close friend of his he is a very kind and caring person. And I wish him all the best in the world. But,he is good on AR but does not do it for me as a Journey fan.Not to the callipur that Steve Perry put the group on.So as far as TBF don't knock it,it was just another journey they took us on,maybe not a good one but hey we went.Besides 69 you do not want all us loons after your ass.

I love both albums, but if I had to make a hard choice between the two, it would be TBF. I wouldn't give up "Message of Love", "Still She Cries" or the title track for anything.

Fave tracks on Arrival of course are "Higher Place", then "Kiss Me Softly" and "World Gone Wild". I remember when I first heard "All The Way" as the 2nd track, it to me sounded like a clone song of "When You Love A Woman" and gave me a bad first impression about the album, like they were recycling songs. I've grown to like the album much more now, though.

I am in no way or form speaking ill of SP.. Who do you think got me into listening to music? I love the guy,and I'm sure he is a very personable guy..But as much as I love TBF,Arrival in my opinion is better..I will easily swap out,any song on the TBF ,maybe except easy to fall(because it sounds so much like my favorite Journey song, sweet and simple. ) But I would swap out any other song on TBF for half the songs on Arrival.. Augeri didn't write the songs..Schon,Cain and Jack Blades did.. But Augeri did a stellar job of singing them..I Love his style and it really reminded me of Perry, style wise.. Just listen to We will meet again..Love that song!

Ah, Kiss Me Softly - my favorite song on Arrival because Steve gets to sound like Steve and not like Steve, if that makes any sense....actually nothing in Journeyworld makes sense anymore!

Agree about Kiss Me Softly. If he would have sung in that lower register more often, I think it would have been better all around. His voice sounds so much better, much more relaxed in that song.

I would Take TBF over the two. Can't Tame The Lion just plain Kicks Butt, and Easy To Fall is a fave of mine over all the albums.

That is actually my #1 favorite song on Arrival, and was also the first song where I heard the uniqueness of Steve's voice. Most of the other tracks, or at least the ones I'd heard to that point when I first bought it, sounded like he was trying to retain the Perry sound. His voice in "Kiss Me Softly" is distinctive -- I can think of exactly the two words in the lyrics that really stuck out to me. Listen to the way he sings them (I've placed them in bold type):

1) It's a feelin' I thought lost or locked away

2) Another question to an answer that I know

On Red 13 and Generations, he just sounds like that Steve Augeri to me. You know, go easy on a new guy now, but I just popped in Arrival for the first time in a year this past weekend (I'd just been listening to "Generations" for several days), and was stunned when the vocals on "Higher Place" kicked in... I was hearing Deen Castronovo now, and not Augeri. I had only recently read the vocal credits on Generations and discovered which songs Deen even sang, and this only a few months after hearing him sing in concert. He has a much huskier and Perry-like tone that Augeri, and this was what I was hearing on "Higher Place". I felt that with Arrival, Journey was trying to prove they were still Journey to all the doubters, and wouldn't have been surprised if they didn't have Deen tackle some songs to bring it as close to home as possible.

Anyway... I started swapping between those two discs and comparing tracks to see if I could be certain, and of course did come away convinced it was Augeri -- just wasn't sure, as he sure sounds much different on Arrival than Generations. Anyway, again, go easy on a new guy... haha! I'm just really getting into all this stuff.

I believe Andrew has tried or at least tried to contact numerous times via email, and unfortunately, Steve has not responded. My only guess why Steve has not replied, and God knows I know nothing about the situation, could be that he sees Andrew as being too close to the band, and does not want to communicate with him. But, your guess is as good as mine.

I remember reading a note from Steve on a fan page several years back, saying that he wasn't even online... He was trying to refute some posts from people apparently posing as him. Maybe he's come into the digital age since then.

Love that song and Arrival (which completely owns TBF in my opinion). I really like the flanger effects on Steve Augeri's vocals on this one especially at the beginning. It's always been my favourite vocal sound for some reason.

Hell, I think I will listen to Arrival again now just for the hell of it!

And if anyone's intersted here's a karaoke file of With Your Love from said album. This one was a bitch to find! It can be used complete with lyrics with the free karaoke player Karafun available here -

http://www.karafun.com/

Or just extract the file with Winrar and play as a mp3

Enjoy!

TBF has some beautiful stuff on it (Still She Cries), but it was way too melancholy for me. Arrival was upbeat and positive and maybe I was just at a time in my life when that was the perfect sound.

BTW, I had to be dragged into the Augeri era kicking and screaming, but I love the guy now! :D

I became a Journey fan because of SP's voice. Nothing against SA, he may be the sweetest and nicest guy there is in the music industry, but when I first heard Arrival, it was revulsive to me. It was almost if he tried to sing those songs like SP, including all the "yeah, yeah"s. I like Generations much better. Beyond the Clouds is my favorite SA/Journey song.

Annie... uh... yeah that was the point. Bottom line... Augeri was an employee of the "Journey Corporation" and his responsibility was to sing as close to Perry as he could while attempting to remain himself. That's why everyone liked JSS so much because Journey was rocking the songs, but without a Perry clone. The new singer will again be a Perry clone with the very same job responsibilities Augeri had, and regardless to whether he has a good voice, the constant comparisons will be made between him and Perry, just like between the two Steve's.

Love Augeri's tone but not too keen on Beyond the Clouds or much of Generations. Your mentioning of that song title reminded me of how I much prefer the Jimi Jamison's Survivor song 'Just beyond the Clouds' from the brilliant Empires album though. Gonna have a listen now so thanks for the prompt!

Didn't care for the rotating lead singing of Generations (JonRossNeal should just stick with playing; Deen gets a pass). But I do like all the songs SA sang on, including the 2 he wrote -- Butterfly and Believe. I don't know what it is, after Arrival, didn't think I like his voice at all. But I find I like his singing, or maybe it's the songs, on Generations better. Arrival was "cookie-cutter" Journey--songs very generic (IMO), no song stood out (to my ears). Higher Place is memorable, though. I just have the original version, never heard World Gone Wild. Can someone post a link?
