Same thing happened to John Schlitt. He did end up singing for Petra (a Christian band), but he could have been as big as Steve Perry if he wouldn't have done the whole religious thing. Once they go that route they usually don't come back.
I'm sure if you asked Jason if he is happy doing what he's doing, whatever that is, he'd tell you that he is. If that's the case, then he's not wasting his talent.
As for John Schlitt, if you listen to his whole catalogue with Petra, you'd realize nothing was wasted at all. The stuff he did with them from 1986 through 1997 was excellent. They definitely had their share of "success" as they were the biggest selling band in the genre for several years running and I'm sure Schlitt would tell you that God's plan for him was better than his own plan.
