Let me add, Neal Morse is a genius in his own right....granted, he's a keyboardist. Spock's Beard was never the same after he left. Sorta like Styx without DeYoung.

His two solo albums, "One" and "Testimony" are both excellent, better than anything Spock's Beard has done since then anyway.

Thats consistent with my view that he was the heart and soul of that band...without his voice and music, SB is just another magna-carta style prog band with zero substance (I know SB is on metalblade, but the point I'm trying to make is that there are a gazzilion of these throw away prog bands that were released on Magna Carta records)...

Same thing with Styx. take anything Styx did without deyoung (including the non-deyoung songs on brave new world...and it just doesn't sound like styx...at all. It just sounds like Tommy Shaw solo shit....

Mike Slamer also gets my vote! Steelhouse Lane, Seventh Key and Slamer are alll amazing albums, with incredible guitar riffs and solos.

IMO the cream of the crop for melodic rock guitarists are...

Neal Schon
Frankie Sullivan
Steve Lukather
Josh Ramos
Dan Huff
Mick Jones (of Foreigner)
Lincoln Brewster
Jeff Watson
Brad Gillis
Paul Dean
Tom Scholtz
James Young
Tommy Shaw

To a certain extent you can also consider Jeff Carlisi and Elliot Easton to be melodic rock guitarists, and their both excellent players too.

I just know that after I post this I'm going to remember someone that I should have named.

Right, but we're talking about recent guitarists...

Neal Schon is growing irrelevant by the minute. Frankie Sullivan was irrelevant after Rocky IV made it to VHS, Dan Huff doesn't even play melodic rock anymore, same goes for Lincoln Brewster, Jeff Watson is in exile, Tom Sholz hasn't recorded anything earth shattering in over 13 years, Brad Gillis rules...but same thing....Paul Dean!?!?!?! I give up...

The rest of the players on that list (and some mentioned above) are too busy kicking out their singers and scraping the bottom of the fan-barrel.....instead of actually doing worthwhile guitar work.

the ONLY guy on this list worth mentioning, with respect to the title of this thread, is Josh Ramos....

one thing NEAL has over all of these guys is that HE CAN WRITE ... he doesnt shred the fastest.. he
doesnt go into crazy tunings, but he has the gift to put together songs that folks like hearing.. Eddie
could do the same.. im not so sure Steve Morse does that much .. Satch can... Vai cant... Vai is amazing
on guitar .. but not a song writer fo the masses...

but none of these guys has invented anything lately..

After thinking about this for a while, here are a few...and I'm limiting myself to guys who started making a name for themselves in the 90s...

Al Pitrelli (Alice Cooper, Asia, Megadeth, Savatage & TSO) - Next to Neal, my favorite player
John Petrucci
Zakk Wylde
Axel Rudi Pell
Joe Stump
Eric Johnson (he was around for awhile in the 80s but didn't really bust out until 1990)
Nick van Dyk (in Redemption w/Fates Warning's Ray Alder)
Michael Romeo
Michael Angelo Batio

For those unfamiliar with Al Pitrelli...I've always thought of him as the heavy metal version of Neal. Very melodic player, in other words.

Al Pitrelli played on two damn good ASIA albums from 90's (featuring John Payne on vocals) - AQUA (92.) and ARIA (94.)

I'm not sure if he played anything on best two ALICE COOPER's albums (Trash and Hey Stoopid) but he was in his touring band at that time...
I remember him contributing couple of guitar lections for serbian Hardmetal magazine in 1990/91.

You did change it. Well, that'll end the confusion.

That guy is fantastic. I do hear some Schon in his playing.
I like to sit out on the front porch, where the birds can see me, eating a plate of scrambled eggs, just so they know what I'm capable of.

I haven't seen them yet, though I have all their albums. The kicker is that they are so popular that they have two touring bands that go out at the same time every year, one covering the eastern half and the other the western. Pitrelli has been with the western group and, unfortunately, if they come to Indiana next year and I get a chance to see them, I won't get to see him.

We were in the same boat as you, only we wanted to see the east coast group - Alex Skolnick!! But I tell you we were not disappointed in the least!!! And as you know Al Pitrelli is fantastic!! The other guitarist on our side of the stage - we had great seats thanks to the TSO fan club(it's free join it before you get tix) - was Angus Clark. Also fantastic!! I wish I had gotten a program so I knew all the rest of the names. The whole group - everyone - FANTASTIC.
