And if Jessie's Girl is the only RS song you know...go get some education, then come back and talk some more.

Man, sounds like I've been missing out on Rick Springfield.

The words "deep," "anthemic," "lyrically," and "catchy" getting thrown around like this is getting me excited.

I'll do some research and maybe place an order for a Springfield disc this week. I need a new artist in my arsenal, he sounds like he's right up my alley too. 8)

Dude, am I the only one that wishes Journey would do more stuff like "One More?" Quite possibly Journey's most epic Perry-era track, in my opinion.

I'l take Springfield and his lyrics every day of the year over Journey or BA. As much as I also love both those! No shame here - Rick rules.

I've seen Rick in the 80's and then my wife took me to see him fall of last year, and he tore the fuckin house down. He walks out into the crowd during Human Touch and man, he stepped to my right onto the chair my wife was just sitting on and the crowd surges in and he loses his balance, I push up his shoulder and my girl, she pushes up on his butt to of course, prevent him from falling. I got grainy cell phone pics but nothing else. Oh well, Springfield will be coming back to California, and me and my girl...we'll be there. If you have to listen to a song with edge, Try Who Killed Rock And Roll.

What a trip! Very similar experience... We saw him last year, and when he came out into the crowd, he was only about 4 feet from me. Stayed out there quite a while, and I also took grainy cell phone pictures. Too bad I never transferred them off... Heck, I still have that phone... maybe I should retrieve them. As for your wife, she didn't listen to his specific rules -- no touching his butt!

Start with this and then check the anthology, he's been around the block musically...trust me.

Most men will say that Journey is gay when they hear me mention the name. When I mention Toto, these same men will give praise to their musicianship. BTW, when I saw Toto a couple of years ago, I was amazed at the number of men in attendance. These guys certainly weren't gay either from what I could tell. Many of them had their wives or girlfriends with them, which, BTW, were the only other women there other than my friend and I. Other than us, I didn't see any other women there by themselves. Hmm....

BTW, my husband and I saw the show FX while on our honeymoon in Vegas, when Rick Springfield was starring in it. I thought for sure that my husband would have something snide to say about him and would prefer the Blue Man Group show to this one. He surprised me by actually liking Rick and claiming that that show was fantastic. :::shrug:::

Oh, and for those obsessed with this label, my husband is NOT gay. :P

I see your point with Toto- never got them.
Springfield's a great song writer and that album I mentioned, if you haven't heard it Deano, you're missing a great album. Much better than Room Service (which I liked btw).

I LIKE Underwear. In fact, that album (18 Till I Die) blows away any album he did before that. Reckless had some good stuff, but Heaven ruined it for me. Hated that song, though I liked Smitty's playing on it. Into the Fire- that song and Native son are great. didn't dig the rest of it.

Jesse's girl, I never got that. Listen to the stuff AFTER he was on TV. The working class dog stuff did nothing for me. From Hard to Hold on, there are some great tracks. Oh, Living in Oz was good too. However, Jesse's girls works great in the clubs!

Back when this one came out, you gave this one a really great review, Andrew. I didn't know much about the man other than the top 40 stuff over the years. I've trusted your reviews in the past, Andrew, so I decided to give this one a shot and bought it. I'm glad I did, because there are some really good songs on this and I still throw this one into the player ever so often.

Will have to go out and pick up SDAA and the compilation now. :D

What's a good Rick Springfield album for starters, I.E.... what's his Escape?

Intresting. Rick has really evolved with each album, so you get a different sound each time. As each album reflects his personal expeiernces and at times demons, there are different vibes going on.

To put it very briefly -

Living In Oz (1983) would I think, be considered his "Escape". Heavier edge to it and more personal and filled with perfect melodic rock.

Tao (1985) is much more high-tech and features lots of synth and drum machines alongside the musicians. Heavier again in places, but his most anthemic release and lyrically, very very deep and disturbed.

Working Class Dog (1981) - 25 years aold, but ahead of it's time...very pop, but catchy as hell...every track.

Rock Of Life (1988) - Mellower, but very high tech power pop/rock. Lyrically as deep if not deeper than ever. A few massive anthems.

Karma (1996/7) - Ages more...but still pop/melodic rock at its best and some great anthems and more personal stories.

Shock Denial Anger Acceptance (2003) - Proof he's still as angry and as rocking as ever...very heavy in places.

Lots to choose from.

Written In Rock - The Anthology is a 2CD set released in 2006 - that's probaly the place to start. Everything represented.

saw springfield back in the 80s HE ROCKED LIVE big time... til tuesday opened up I think. More than Jesse's Girl for sure!!

I've heard much of Toto's catalogue and I can say without a doubt that they do not rock as hard as Journey. Not even close. However, that doesn't mean I don't like their music.

Most of Kingdom of Desire rocks my ass right off, same with Falling in Between. Those are both excellent hard-rocking albums.

Isolation has its hard rock moments too - its a great album - and Rick Springfield wrote some excellent songs and was a great performer.
Souls is an out and out classic.

How is it that Rick Springfield is the only Aussie I've ever heard without an accent??? I thought perhaps it was something that went away, with time. I then saw some 30 year old footage of the guy, and there isn't a hint of an accent anywhere. Strange.

I was a huge Rick Springfield fan in the 80's and saw him twice in concert and almost died from over heating! :D

I've lost track of him, but I just ordered S.D.A.A. I listened to the song samples on Amazon and liked most of them. I'll be watching Oprah today too! Wow, 2 days in a row!!

Uggh! Deano, please don't remind us of the HUMAN TOUCH era Boss. It's WELL documented how much I love Bruce, but I try to pretend that the early 90's (non E Street era) just didn't exist!

I rather like Mr Springfield. Yes, he was a pretty boy, but he did have some damn good songs, especially later on. I really liked IT'S ALWAYS SOMETHING, for example. (Saw him around the time that album was released- NEVER seen so many hot , 40 year old women in one room at the same time in my life!) My absolute fave of his is MY FATHER'S CHAIR- when my Dad passed that song became very important to me.

I also saw this last night... he does look great, but I hate to say, it was like a good portion of his face above the lower jaw did not move with the rest of his mouth... I sense BOTOX! :P He looks much younger than pictures I've seen of him from a few years back, so something is obviously up...

Another thing... I've suspected for quite a while that he does very little guitar playing in his live shows... that he mainly just uses his guitar as a prop. His hyper guitar antics are fun to watch, but rarely if ever match up with the song. I know at least he plays it some live, but I seriously doubt it was plugged in at all on Oprah. Any other opinions?

Rick's always performed with a guitar in hand...always. But he also uses a great lead guitarist in his band (Tim Pierce thru the 80s). Rick plays rhythm and drops in and out when hes running/going spaz...
