Well whoever it was, I am sure that person likes some bands I don't care for. Makes no difference to me as it shouldn't to any of you. Everyone has different tastes. It's certainly not for me to judge what people enjoy to listen to. Confrontation is not going to change anyone's tastes in music, the arts, or anything else and seems pointless. Come together on common ground and go your own way when your interests take a fork in the road, you know?

Triumph fucking rocks! Saw them in concert years ago and had a great time. Rik Emmett still has it too.

Cool - I knew there had to be others here! When they reunite this summer I am sure the news and reviews will be here. Just wish they had their own forum.

I saw where you petitioned Andrew to include one. I think you have a point. Come one Andrew, you could make one for Triumph/Rik Emmett for the fans of them.

Rik was so negative towards it for so long. I never thought it would happen. During the interim, I became a fan of his solo stuff which is very diverse. Anything from rock to fusion. My Canadian rock fix turned towards Rush for the most part. I love Rush, but Triumph for me was always a hybrid between Yes and Rush with a little bit of melodic metal sprinkled in. No one else could compare for me personally. I wish they could have stayed together longer to amass a much fuller body of work though.

funny whoever did the comparison chose the Chile show when it was Arnel's first show where he did not do well. They shouldve done the Vegas one where he did so much better

Okay, he sounds strong on lead and too blended on backing. There seems to be disparity between him being too far out front and the backing being too far back. In other words, I hear vocals that seem to be unbalanced and over-produced. I also think that AP still has a diction problem. There are some words where you can hear his accent. Right or wrong? Who's to say. But I know that I don't like it. In other parts, he sounds like Jimi Jamison. That's kinda cool.

But my connection to YouTube HD hasn't arrived yet, so current quality is poor at best.

Accent? ACCENT?!?!? Are you serious? Who gives a flying crap about an accent?!?! Did you ever hear Palcido or Domingo sing in English? Plenty of "accent" there, but no one gives a rats ass because a great voice is a great voice. PERIOD. For Christ sake, some of you people on this site are either out your minds or just dumb as dirt.!! You claim to be music lovers but you are more like People magazine types with your ranting over personalities. Appreciate a great voice for what is and enjoy the freaking music. We're lucky things worked out and this guy is here sharing his voice with us. I listened to a lot of radio today and no one comes close to this guy, and they ALL have access to the same recording technology.

pinkvelvet,

Thanks for the link. He sang the piece with heart-wrenching emotion. I've no problem with Arnel's accent coz he sings well and it's the conviction in his voice that wins me over. JBabe

Aaron, provide a link to the new song ? if ya want comments

Watched the Ellen D clip,.. I reckon he's a bit flat and holds notes longer than the way the song is written, phrasing is not good. He needs more vocal coaching. Yes he has a good range and needs more experience maybe but its been done before and now its being milked. So what if he sounds like Perry or doesn't. imo this time around Journey should have grown some hair on those musical balls, beef it up while keeping it melodic. For the record I would not like to see Steve Perry back,... they had their day, move on, redefine their sound break new ground. Its only my opinion so what.

What a coincidence!
You suck, are off kilter, can't appreciate a good voice, scream anti-Pineda boilerplate all the time, and are a weird presence.
You're so hard up to get rid of Pineda, you'll trash ANYTHING he does.

I agree. Perry rolled his ass there.

Yeah ... kinda no comparison. AP's pitch is fine, but Perry he ain't. AP's voice is definitely thinner than Steve Perry's and is not as rich. Range is same or close, but that's where the similarity ends for me. Perry's voice has more "quality" to it for lack of a better term. And yes, I know it's a shitty Youtube with meh quality for audio.

Here's Faithfully done the same way http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EvRZBJIKf4&NR=1

They are NOT helping Arnel's cause with these. As much as you want to hate to admit it, Perry in his prime (the key here) did these songs effortlessly and sounded better. Period. Again, Arnel isn't bad AT ALL.

The other thing I notice is the difference in Deen vs. Smitty. I think that also has a bit of a difference. And listen to Neil's tone in 2008 vs. 1984. Yuck. It was much more "woody" and fit in the mix better in 1984. SAme core tone, but the processing is too much now IMHO

On topic, though - AP sounds OK on that new tune, but it doesn't knock me out or make me think "Journey's back!" I can live with the little accent stuff on his voice. That doesn't bother me. It'll be interesting to see how this plays itself out after the release of the album and a more extensive tour of the USA.

I think Arnel sounds like Arnel on the new song, and probably sounds the same on the others. No different than Augeri sounding like Augeri on the original material that she sang on. The bottom line with Arnel and Augeri when his voice was capable was that they could and can bring enough of the Perry sound to satisfy the average fan at a live show, but they don't sound like Perry when they do the new stuff.

At last someone with a decent ear for guitar tone. Have to agree 100%

As for the comment Steve A. and Arnel not sounding the same as Perry on the newer stuff,.. its because they haven't got a clue about delivery in the true Journey style or vein, in other words they are lost because Perry didn't sing it first and give direction, emotional feel, style and passion for these guys to emulate. Who can they copy, yet they can not stamp their own identity on anything thats recorded, there ain't any room for that. So we get the nearest thing, clone, cover band.

I heard the new song and all I thought was "this would've been great with JSS."

Arnel will smoke on the ballads, but he's going to struggle on the heavier tunes, I think...which is the Journey stuff I really love.
