I can't find a link. I get the mag. on subscription so usually get it about 4 days before it hits the shops. It's a very short interview.

And I suppose Herbie Herbert would have to be counted as a "less than reliable source" too, right Jon? Didn't he razz the Augeri fronted 2001 "live" dvd in his recent interview with Andrew for much the same reason? A pitchy singer who has to be pro-tooled in post?

The comment about Jeff was simply idiotic! As someone else already pointed out...If these guys really thought of Jeff as a "relief pitcher", why the hell would they announce the guy as the "permanent lead singer"? The comments these guys make NEVER cease to amaze me. Someone pointed out in the Augeri thread that these guys were somehow "loyal", which is the most fucking absurd thing I've EVER heard! These guys are loyal to their wallets and bank accounts, and NOTHING else! Neal made some ridiculous comments about Perry in his latest interview, and now this. These guys REALLY need to hire a PR firm or simply shut their pieholes!

It's a business folks. Neil runs the business and he can do as he pleases. I've said from the beginning JSS is an incredible vocalist and front man but he wasn't a fit for Journey. Some wanted Journey to "take another direction" well guess what folks, then it wouldn't be Journey.

Arnel is an amazing singer and he is a high tenor, JSS is a baritone, the similarities in Perry and Arnel are more apparent because of the vocal range. When I listen to Journey I want the singer to be able to hit the notes and have the same "feeling" as Perry.

Steve Perry was offered the position to be lead singer again. He refused and wants to live his life, well, that's fine and dandy but I don't think the other guys should be forced to give up what they love (and face it, if they didn't love it they wouldn't be doing it) simply because Perry either can't sing, doesn't want to sing, or simply is over the whole Journey thing.

Want to blame someone, blame Perry. I give Neil props for carrying on the music and the legacy and I'm excited about this new CD more than I've been over and Journey CD since the 80's, just from listening to the clips.

Why do we have to keep rehasing and trashing? Let's enjoy the talents of these men and maybe recapture some of that love we felt all those years ago.

Peace all!

I'm not sure whether or not your comment is directed at me, but I can assure you that I NEVER believed Jeff was "the voice" for Journey. I think Jeff is a class act, and a very talented musician, but never suggested he should have been the front man. Then again, I thought Augeri struggled mightily attempting to sing Journey's catalog. My comment was simply that NeAl and company shouldn't have announced the guy as their "permanent lead singer" if Cain's comments about always knowing Jeff was a "relief pitcher" are accurate!

BobbyinTN wrote:Some wanted Journey to "take another direction" well guess what folks, then it wouldn't be Journey.

This we agree on. I've heard MANY on this board suggest Journey should go in a "more hard rocking direction". I've said all along that the suggestion is flat out dopey! After 30+ years, you don't fuck with the formula that brought you soooooo much success! To Neal's credit (even though I think the guy is a moron), he was at least smart enough to understand that. Let me also say that I never believed that Jeff was on a mission to take Journey in a whole "new" direction. I think Jeff was ALWAYS respectful of the legacy of the name Journey, and always understood what the band and their music was all about!

BobbyinTN wrote: When I listen to Journey I want the singer to be able to hit the notes and have the same "feeling" as Perry.

You and everyone else! Once again, Neal understands that this band will FOREVER be identified by Perry's soaring vocals. Because of that, he had to find someone who he thinks sounds like the guy!

BobbyinTN wrote: Steve Perry was offered the position to be lead singer again.

I'm not sure this is true. I know Perry has said in a recent interview that he and Neal simply "don't get along", so I would be shocked if a formal offer was ever made. We've all read the stories of Neal perusing YouTube looking for a guy who sounded like Perry. Nowhere in those stories did I ever read "Hey, I called and offered the gig to Perry, but he turned it down"!

BobbyinTN wrote:He refused and wants to live his life, well, that's fine and dandy

It sure is! I personally think Perry would be INSANE to EVER consider returning to these guys. His legacy is forever cemented. They are a caricature of what they once were. For the record, I still listen to and enjoy the music, but it's never going to be what it was

BobbyinTN wrote: I don't think the other guys should be forced to give up what they love

Nor do I. If these guys want to tour until they're 90 (which they might do), then more power to them! I don't recall anyone trying to "force" them to do anything. They're grown men, and should do what makes them happy and more importantly, what pays the bills!

BobbyinTN wrote:and face it, if they didn't love it they wouldn't be doing it

Well, I'm not so sure about that. I don't think these guys tour, ENDLESSLY, out of pure love for their craft. I think it might have something to do with needing to make as much money as they can (which is more than okay by me). I'm a capitalist, at heart, so I'll NEVER begrudge ANYONE for making every nickel they can make. I just get tired of hearing people turn Neal into some kind of musical martyr with all this "Hey, it's Neal's band and he loves this" crap! It's nauseating! Neal has said publically (on more than one occassion) that the music Journey plays isn't really his thing! He has flat out said "this is how I pay my bills". Again, I don't have a problem with this, but let's stop turning the guy into Mother fucking Theresa, because he isn't!

BobbyinTN wrote:Want to blame someone, blame Perry.

Blame Perry for what??? Listen, there are enough people on this board (my buddies JoePa and SJ, for starters) who believe Perry is the devil incarnate! The bottom line is that without Perry's voice, Journey doesn't exist, and Andrew doesn't have them listed ANYWHERE on this website, period, END OF STORY! Neal was surfing YouTube looking for a replacement for Perry...not Augeri or Soto!

Hi John,
No, it wasn't directed at you specifically, but to everyone who still wants to argue that JSS was the best choice, I mean that's opinion and nothing wrong with opinions, but it was Neal's (sorry for mispelling, I do it all the time and should check before I post) decision along with Jon C.'s

I agree with a lot of what you said. I love Steve Perry's voice and am inspired by it constantly and I was referring to the Trial By Fire era when he refuse to tour.

I do believe Arnel's voice is a perfect fit for Journey and as I said, I'm looking forward to the new CD, but don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those people who trash other singers, (I'm a singer) and I know it's hard pleasing all the people all the time.

Another thing you are EXACTLY correct about is the "hard rocking" thing. I wouldn't listen to Journey if they went entirely "hard rock", they're musicians for God's sake and not every musician wants to play the same beat 27/7-365. I love the rockin' tunes, but love them even more when there's a moderate tempo in the mix and yes, (much to some's chagrin) ballads. I love those ballads and without them, I don't think it would be Journey.

Peace.

A few points...

1- Captain Friga is a fucking prick. He needs to drop his elitist attitude and stick to doing what he does best: tickling ivories and writing lyrics. For a supposedly faithful family man he sure sounds like a massive tool.

2- I forgot how much I loved Coming Home. Thanks for the link Jeff, gonna spin the SS record after the races today now, and you're the shit. Can't wait for the new album.

and finally....

3- For those of you bitching about those who bitch about new directions for Journey and such....

....you wouldn't be on this forum today had Journey not taken a new direction in 1978. ;)

Well, and that was a "reforming" too.

The Journey we all know and love that charted and is one of the biggest bands in history has a "signature" sound that's ingrained in most of our minds, and ProgRocker, no disrespect meant at all, but that sound IMHO being fucked with would only insure less radio play and even more fan loss.

I thought the same thing when I read that...JC's probably not aware of the HH interview since it is Andrew's exclusive. 'Course, what are they going to say? Especially at this point where they are releasing a new CD and getting on t.v. They still need to think before they speak, 'tho.

I agree with you on points 1 and 2, but not 3. Journey is not going in a new direction, they are trying to imitate the old, nothing new. Fuckin with the greatest hit proves that point even more.

Cain said in an interview that Neal surfs the message boards for "every little bad thing that's being said about him". We also have Jeremey's old blog of his audition experience where he said Neal and Jon arrived at the rehearsal and were humorously quoting derogatory names they were being called on the MR forums. Kevin Shirley even went so far as to issue a glowing report about the new album's recording sessions when they heard about the negative assumptions about the upcoming Revelation album.

Thats how we know.

The issue with Jeff isn't so much that he's no longer the lead singer in Journey. That's subjective and it's the band's decision on what they want vocally from a frontman. It's how Neal and Jon went about it that rubs most people raw. Cain's assertion in this interview (should it be confirmed that it is a real interview, since there's no link to it anywhere) that Jeff was merely a relief pitcher when he was officially named lead singer, a photo session of him posing with the band on their website, Neal talking about the future with Jeff as front man in his own interviews at the time, just adds salt to the wound of their atrocious behavior.

Jeremey stated in a post (not long ago) that he got a call from Jon Cain telling him about his writing credit on NWA and that Neal sent him a text message. Basically healing any potential ill feelings. What, they can't do the same thing for Jeff? You know, the guy who saved their financial asses on a huge tour?

That's what's at issue. As artists, I admire them. As people, not so much.

I would submit that if you are looking for people to admire as indivduals (not as musicians) in the music industry, your list will be a very short one. Not excusing anyone's behaviour, it just seems to be more the norm than not...

The Interview is genuine.

It was Dave Ling who interviewed him and it is in the new classic Rock magazine with Kiss on the cover.

http://www.daveling.co.uk/diaryapril08.htm

Scroll down to 29th April.

this is not the interview just a pre cursor to it.

I think, for most of us, it's not a matter of re-hashing and beating a dead horse. It is their band, they have made their decision, and have moved on. But, as often is the case through the years (and through the # of interviews subsequent to every big event), the often callous way in which they talk about other people/events just rubs the wrong way.

As Johnfrom Boston said, they really should let their PR people do all the talking or "think" before they speak. But, then, maybe they are just insensitive SOB's and don't give a damn.

How do you know? gee there sure are alot of experts on here about Journey band members.
If you guys think they are such low lifes why are you even here?

The music industry is a megasorusgodzillaterranahsorusrex (just made that up 8) ) business, that god himself doesn't even know how it REALLY runs. It's so out there, planet earth doesn't even know where to begin...and that goes for ANYTHING that exists in this world when it comes to figures. There's one thing wrong with this world today...and that's money..throw in a close second fucked up specimen in the mix, and that's people. When the two clash, it isn't going to be pretty!!

Which comes to my point. These guys are business men...more-so business men, than they are people. Not only that, they are a WELL RECOGNIZED part of American and world history where they can NOT afford to throw themselves to a pact of wolves given any situation thrown at them. (Tape Gate, Perry, Records, Management, JSS, Jeremey, Herbert, Arnel, Augeri) and the list goes on.

You think they give a flying fuck that they announced JSS as a lead singer to their rock -n- roll band to soon dump him for another singer? No. You think they give a shit about using tapes for Augeri to keep on touring year in and year out? No. And most of all, do you think they give a rats ass about what some fan has to say about them on a message board? HELLLL NO.
This business is their LIFE and nothing more. They will never be reconized as normal people (not even to themselves) and that's the risk you take of being apart of something such a big deal. They are the planets own Ginny-pigs..to be apart of the music industry opens them up to criticisms amongst many. They will ALWAYS protect themselves no matter what...NO MATTER WHAT. And if one person who is registered on these boards were apart of it, you'd do the same damn thing. No one really knows what these guys have to go through on a day to day basis...throughout life..and that goes for any top dollar organization on earth. It's either their way....or the highway. PERIOD, and that's the way it will continue to be.

With that rant said... if you want to have a good life that these guys probably don't have..then stop worrying about what some piano player said or did about someone. It will make your life so much easier. Love them for who they are... MUSICIANS..and hot damn is this group one of the BEST IN THE WORLD..that's why we love them so much, so WE DON'T HAVE TO DO IT!!

long live Journey!

These guys are loyal to their wallets and bank accounts, and NOTHING else! Neal made some ridiculous comments about Perry in his latest interview, and now this. These guys REALLY need to hire a PR firm or simply shut their pieholes!

Thank you! They had Jeff's photo up as a member of the group in the photo line up on the front page.

He was in photos of the entire group on the website.

Jeff's biography was on the site.

This revision of history that Jon is trying to push off is insulting to Jeff, insulting to us and makes him look like a twit.

It really pisses me off.

I know that look well and have had it leveled at me on more than one occasion.

Yikes! :(

That's just wrong.

3- For those of you bitching about those who bitch about new directions for Journey and such....

....you wouldn't be on this forum today had Journey not taken a new direction in 1978. ;)

Man, I hate it when you make a point! :D :P :D
