Each unit counts as a sale for Billboard. Each audio CD counts towards RIAA certification. Therefore 250,000 units sold = GOLD certification. But it would still be listed on Billboard as 250,000 sold.

I wonder if Journey's contract with Wal-Mart allows for wider distribution after a certain time or sales point? By that I mean: will "Revelation" be distributed for sale in other stores (Fye, Target, Virgin, etc.) after Wal-Mart has had the first-shot at sales?

It might even make sense for Wal-Mart to allow that, for reasons of self-interest. Broader distribution could increase interest in the album, resulting ultimately in higher sales for Wal-Mart. For instance, by the end of the tour (late in the year), if Wal-Mart is the exclusive distributor, it might be selling, say, 1,000 units of "Revelation" per week. But, in contrast, by allowing broader distribution (thereby resulting in greater interest, resulting in greater radio airplay, resulting in greater album interest, etc. etc.), Wal-Mart moves, say 2-3,000 units per week late in the year. Because Wal-Mart is such a big player in retail, this is an entirely possible scenario.

Just curious .....

Along the same lines, if WalMart ends up with "overstock" will they "sell" to other outlets?
