Vocally it sounded very much like Perry's TBF voice. Pretty good stuff, Jeremey. I heard a touch of If He Should Break Your Heart in your vocals and I love that song. Your song had a faster tempo, though. Thanks for sharing.

Sounds great Jeremey. Definitely a Journey sound which can only be good. Good to see you getting the originals out there.

Reminds me a little of Departure's "Corporate Wheel". Ever given it a listen?

Yes, Timothy Lewis on Vox(he being Departure's THIRD vocalist behind David Baldwin, and Kenny Michaels) is a Perry doppelganger. Awesome Cd!

Tracks 5 and 7 sound the most Perry/Journey like.....

honestly my fear would be that you'd slip into oblivion with the perryesque kind of sound; guess it depends on what you are fine with; if it's your voice as you know it then it's cool but otherwise i'd be really trying to get my own sound and not be heard as an immitation of the voice. get something distinctly as your own.

Jeremey
The frustrating thing is that it's going to sound like Perry, regardless.

That is his voice!

OMFG, What if Jeremey and Perry release something around the same time. Imagine the irony when people think J sounds more like the Perry that they remember then the real SP is going to sound with his current voice.

Honestly Jeremey... it sounds like a great tune...and it's just a demo? Cool. While there will always be a little SP sound to your voice, just go with it. I agree that it sounds like a more modern Guiffria tune than SP or JOurney.

And Although I love Rascal Flatts, try not to sound too pop/country man... It's really not your style IMO. An album of melodic rock tunes like this one you posted with your vocals, good lyrics and some nice guitar hooks/riffs would be much preferred Jeremey. Nice track though, can't wait to see the CD available.

Thanks to all of you for taking a listen....Very encouraging! We've got about 4 songs floating around in some form or another right now, so the idea is to get about 15 together, with 10 for a CD and 5 more for publishing or some other thing. With my schedule I'm not sure how long it will take to meet that goal, but I'm working every day on this, so who knows. The funny thing is my collaborator actually asked me, "should we keep this Journey sound or work up a different arrangement?" I said, "Dude, this doesn't sound like Journey, this is what I'm trying for here." So then he tells me, "well, why don't you let some people listen to it for a few days and then come back to it?" And of course, everyone says it sounds like Journey, so shows how much I know....

When I mentioned Rascal Flatts and Keith Urban, what I meant was that modern country music is basically MORE pop and 80's style these days than anything on pop radio. I'm not shooting for a country sound, but for that kind of pop and rock, with elements of the modern country production, which guys like Dann Huff are making the best sounding CDs today. And Dann is an old 80's AOR guy, so go figure...

Anyway, thanks again for taking a listen. Send me a friend request if you're on myspace....I'll keep you all posted....

Thanks,
Jeremey

Jeremey,

It sounds excellent! And, yes, your voice is a spitting image of Perry's, but not because you're trying to make it sound that way! It's natural to you and like what others have said, go with it dude! I think it's awesome! I love the sound of that song. I understand the vibe you're trying to get with the sound and I think it's a good approach. I will definitely be purchasing more than one copy of this, so please keep us posted!

key point to remember here....as long as you sing as a smooth tenor voice, people are going to say it sounds like Perry. As long as you sing in that voice in a melodic rock/pop song, they are going to say it sounds like Journey. Doesn't matter about vocal inflections/style or anything else--people hear the tenor voice, and that's ALL they hear. Personally, I don't think you sound like Perry--especially on the original material...but I understand where everyone else is coming from.

Asking people on a JOURNEY forum, where you are known to sing Journey, is only going to skew/bias the results. They are listening for Journey, and will pick up the slightest hint in a millisecond. To a regular audience (non-Journey based), it may not be as noticeable.

The only way you are going to get away from it though is to drastically change the music style (see Kevin Chalfant's Running with the Wind cd)...or lower your voice an octave or so and sing a bit lower. Otherwise, you'll have to live with people saying it sounds like Journey or "Steve Perry singing....__insert music style here__....".

Call it a blessing or a curse, but unless you do something radical, you are stuck with it.

Good luck.

Thanks you guys...

Reason I'm bringing this back up is because after a week or so, I've gotten the clearance to give a little more info on this one...

Probably sounds like a rocked up Outfield, because it is John Spinks from The Outfield handling all musical duties on this demo. :o

John has been incredibly gracious of his time and his interest in my career over the past year or so, and we are currently working together on putting together some semblance of a solo record in the next 12 months. I can't and won't speak on John's behalf regarding any of this project, but it in no way interferes with his bread and butter that is his Outfield career and his and Tony's partnership. With both John and mine continuing commitments, we are hoping to get something together by next spring, understanding my touring schedule and John's own commitments.

Anyway, it's a way cool thing for me, as John's always been a huge musical hero of mine, and it's an amazing thing to share the excitement with him on the prospect of us working together...

Thanks again!
