I've never felt the earth move so I can't imagine how really strange and scary it must feel.

that got me thinking earlier...
what is worse going through a tornado or earthquake...
I've lived through both sort of- the tornado didn't hit our house but one of worst outbreaks- April 1974 in KY- destroyed lots around us. I've felt a 5.2 quake in KY (centered near West Salem, IL.) back in April that was- hair raising. It was sort of a rolling, shuddering thing.Hope everyone is safe.

Didn't feel it but it;s a reminder to get prepared.
Glad there were no real injuries other than stuff.

There fun when they thrill without injury or property spill.

This one was 1 perecent of the Northridge energy & it still shook pretty good.
There saying the likelihood of a Northridge or greater is probable in the next 10 years

I don't know why I didn't feel it seems almost everyone did.
I may have been on the road
perhaps the tires absorbed the shock
or else I was at the Dr's in Sylmar. Either way I had no idea there was an earthquake until I saw it in the TV
which concerned me as I hoped everything was alright at home.
I wasn't too worried as this building made it fine thru Northridge so I assumed this smaller quake would be ok.
I heard they did feel it in North Hollywood for about 30 seconds
Thats pretty long but my builidng had no damage.
The last earthquake I remember was about 4AM
maybe 4 or so years ago so it woke me.
It was fun
sort of that rolling wave tingling feeling
still it was scary fun as I could see flashes of light & hear explosions as transformers blowing up in the distance.
When it was over I looked out the window to see the water in the pool swaying in & out of it like giant waves.

Being on the first floor is a major concer but if any bed can save me from a ceiling falling
I got it so I feel its safe to sleep.
It's antique cast iron with a 5 foot headboard of 2 inch tubing.
It was found hidden in the boiler room of an old school turned condo in SOHO & it took two guys to carry it up 5 flights to my Greenwich Village apt.
It's one of a kind & I like that.
So let's get prepared
so that if the city is cut off
we got some food & water
flashlights.
Won't be fun
but life is not always easy so hoping we can have loved ones safe by our side.
That's all that really matter.

Yeah, this was like an after shock for the Northridge Quake. I was a delivery driver in L.A. at the time, that was scary!! I was in an elevator a few times when we had after shocks, that was an experienceJust the same, Ill take Earth Quakes over Floods and Hurricanes anytime.

scared the bird
felt 2 hard jerks
no damage or movement
just big jerks
I looked it up
first saw a 5
then they said 3
no way that was a 3
It was scary as it was violent but very quick
like someone dropped a piano upstairs

I'm glad I got a poured concrete foundation...my builder builds em strong!
Gosh it was scary though hoping it wouldn;t keep going on or get worse
I still have chills from it & my head is a bit dazed

I'm in N Hollywood & it seemed to be ok here in the valley as it was centered in Lennox & they say 3.1???

Shadowsong wrote:Seems it was a 5 at Sunday, May 17, 2009 at 8:39:36 PM (PDT)
I felt that one
2 jerks
I didn't feel the 3.1 that was recorded 5 minutes later
So let's hope the earth belched & now it feels better

Agreed. 4.7s are noticeable, but that's it. Lamps sway, seats shake, pictures may fall off wall if they are put up with playdoh.
5.7s on the other hand can be scary kaka. It's more than notice, it's duck & cover as things go flying. I'm not sure of the math as it's a logiarithm (and I'm arts), but per the internet... you'd need 900 4.7s to equal one 6.7. Joys huh... so figure at least 450 times stronger?. And if you are at ground zero (under your feet) rather than miles away, it's worse. During the Northridge quake, I thought our house was going to fall down. The noise, the shaking. It was horrific. Then I found out that it was centered in Northridge -- a good 12 miles away. Three days later, I was in Northridge (I worked there at the time), putting our office back together (nothing was left standing). The Bullocks that collapsed was right down the street from the office, so that was ground zero more or less. We were outside on the patio having lunch when the two 5.0s hit.... I went screaming like a banshee into the parking lot, and everyone else was just staring at me.
They said that was nothing.... being right IN IT was worse. The 6.9 in Pasadena felt as strong as the 5.0 did to me at ground zero. I can't even imagine.
One thing I did do after that was to get trained. I took a gazillion courses in urban search & rescue, triage, first aid, cpr, etc. I was trained by paramedics and the guys who do this for a living. They had a destroyed elementary school they used, and we had to crawl in on our bellies to 'rescue' victims in a one hour period (cause that's kinda all you got for those that are seriously injured). First time I did it, I got to the part where I could stand up, and brushed away some wires that were hanging down from the ceiling. I was dead (the wires were live). Back of the hand, back of the hand... the muscles in your hand will contract if they get a surge of electricity... so you clear a room with the back of your hand instead, you arm will bounce off the wire, not contract around it. Little things....I have bags upon bags of ERT team supplies. If something goes down, I could actually help. I prefer helping than standing there doing nothing and being part of the problem.
