Earthquakes are pretty tough, though kinda fun as long as no one gets hurt. I was in the '89 7.0 in N. Ca. That was an experience! They are saying Utah is due for a big one soon as well. I'm sure they will probably bring that up again tonight on the news.

California sure knows how to ROCK AND ROLL!!!

......sorry.
Rock on,

For those of you that know Southern California, you probably know where this is...

Just got back to the office here...was sitting on the junction overpass from the Northbound 15 to the Westbound 91.; Just 10 miles from the Epicenter and about 100 or so feet in the air; talk about some scary s**t! !

Anyways, I saw a big rig pull up in the lane next to me as traffic was heavy and I thought to myself "boy, those big rigs still rock these things (overpasses) even when they're going slow." Then, this poor guy in a black Toyota Prius pulled up next to me and stopped. His face suddenly lost all color and I thought he was gonna throw up! LOL

Anyways, that was my worst nightmare come true right there.

I've never felt the earth move so I can't imagine how really strange and scary it must feel.

The Northridge one in '94 was at around 5 a.m. -- it was scary because you are suddenly awaken to feeling like the house is falling down & you can't see anything, it was still dark. We were so surprised to see only a few glasses broke, when it sounded like much worse. Of course, there were some concrete buildings, major freeway overpasses, parking structures and homes that collapsed killing many people...only a few miles away and some several miles away. It really hit a wide area and even 'tho we were close to the epicenter there was a lot of damage further away, depending on if they are on landfill or bedrock, and how the structures were built. There would have been more casualties if it had happened at another time, like during the day...it was also lucky that it happened on Martin Luther King's B-day and it was a holiday for a lot of people.
You prepare the best you can and hope for the best...most people have their heavy furniture, wall units bolted to the walls (or should), breakables tacked down with earthquake putty, water bottles, flashlight & shoes under the bed in case there's broken glass somewhere.

This one looks like minor damage done...the mall nearby was just on the News and they had broken water lines and flooding at the Macy's.

I'm always 20 miles from everything. I'm 20 miles from West Salem, and let me tell ya, that's NO way to be woke early in the morning! I'm also about 20 miles from Allendale, IL where there was an F4 tornado in January of 1989. Judging from what I saw in the aftermath of the Allendale tornado, I think I'd take an earthquake in most cases.

Definitely felt it. I work in the basement of a brick building in the San Gabriel Valley... so yeah. The whole building was definitely shaking severely. I had our 75 year old aunt in the office so I had to get her up the stairs. All the dancers from Russia were in the building for coaching with the world champ, and they were freaked out. Eyes as wide as deer in a headlight. I spent most of the rest of that hour calming people down, checking the building for cracks, and answering phone calls... all the way from Romania!!! LOL. So cute. For me.. it was a piece of cake. Northridge was scary shit. This one was nuthin' compared to that.

and then it occured to me I don't have my obligatory change of clothes and shoes that I should have there. No earthquake kit... I used to be the Emergency Floor captain at my old job, so I know how to do light urban search & rescue if necessary. But now.. no helmet, no flashlight. Sheesh.. I need to get reprepped.

They're calling it a 5.4

Didn't feel it but it;s a reminder to get prepared.
Glad there were no real injuries other than stuff.

There fun when they thrill without injury or property spill.

This one was 1 perecent of the Northridge energy & it still shook pretty good.

I don't know why I didn't feel it seems almost everyone did.
I may have been on the road
perhaps the tires absorbed the shock
or else I was at the Dr's in Sylmar. Either way I had no idea there was an earthquake until I saw it in the TV
which concerned me as I hoped everything was alright at home.
I wasn't too worried as this building made it fine thru Northridge so I assumed this smaller quake would be ok.
I heard they did feel it in North Hollywood for about 30 seconds
Thats pretty long but my builidng had no damage.

The last earthquake I remember was about 4AM
maybe 4 or so years ago so it woke me.
It was fun
sort of that rolling wave tingling feeling
still it was scary fun as I could see flashes of light & hear explosions as transformers blowing up in the distance.
When it was over I looked out the window to see the water in the pool swaying in & out of it like giant waves.

Being on the first floor is a major concer but if any bed can save me from a ceiling falling

It's antique cast iron with a 5 foot headboard of 2 inch tubing.
It was found hidden in the boiler room of an old school turned condo in SOHO & it took two guys to carry it up 5 flights to my Greenwich Village apt.
It's one of a kind & I like that.

So let's get prepared

Won't be fun

In an elevator?! Yikes!

The thing that concerns me with these - like the one here yesterday - is the not knowing. Not knowing if the one you are going through is just the tip of the iceberg of a bigger one somewhere else.

......sorry.

Me, too, I was about to get off work right in downtown S.F. when the quake hit a little before 6 pm. And the Giants/A's were getting ready to play their WS game at Candlestick Park. What a sight driving through the Marina seeing the homes on fire, just trying to get on the Golden Gate Bridge heading home to hubby and baby. Remarkable, all the destruction centered on that part of the City and East Bay, including the collapse of the Bay Bridge where cars were trapped with those poor early commuters. Marin County went completely unscathed, not even a broken glass.

Glad to hear this is not a big one, and everyone seems to be all right.

Did you guys know that just a few miles of here (NW of Reno, Nevada) lies a fault. I have been living here since '91, and this is the 1st I've been aware of this. For the past 2 months, we have been experiencing "the shakes" -- like 4-5 ccurrences throughout the day -- day after day -- anywhere from 2.0 to a 4.9 being the highest. I am so glad our house is in the SW, as the people in NW reported cracking walls and foundation all around their houses. And, it's like a mad rush to get earthquake insurance.

Seismologists say it's no longer a matter of if, but when and in which "earthquake state" the next big one will hit with the magnitude like the S.F. '06 earthquake that almost destroyed the city.

Well, enough about earthquakes, lol.

I still got chills from it
scared the bird
felt 2 hard jerks
no damage or movement
just big jerks

I looked it up
first saw a 5
then they said 3
no way that was a 3

It was scary as it was violent but very quick
like someone dropped a piano upstairs

I'm glad I got a poured concrete foundation...my builder builds em strong!

Gosh it was scary though hoping it wouldn;t keep going on or get worse

I still have chills from it & my head is a bit dazed

I'm in N Hollywood & it seemed to be ok here in the valley as it was centered in Lennox & they say 3.1???

We had a quake? Didn't feel a thing. Nothing. Neither did my son.

Now it's downgraded down to a 4.7. Pffft... easy.

Laura on the other hand, is probably freaking.... she doesn't do quakes well. Probably would equate to my reaction to a tornado. Should be interesting to hear if she felt it or not. She didn't call... so perhaps she didn't feel it afterall. Hmmmmmmmmmm

earthquakes are kinda fun, as long as they're not strong enough to cause injuries. some feel like a single jolt, like someone's bumped into your chair & some feel more jiggly, like turbulence on an airplane.

Agreed. 4.7s are noticeable, but that's it. Lamps sway, seats shake, pictures may fall off wall if they are put up with playdoh.

5.7s on the other hand can be scary kaka. It's more than notice, it's duck & cover as things go flying. I'm not sure of the math as it's a logiarithm (and I'm arts), but per the internet... you'd need 900 4.7s to equal one 6.7. Joys huh... so figure at least 450 times stronger?. And if you are at ground zero (under your feet) rather than miles away, it's worse. During the Northridge quake, I thought our house was going to fall down. The noise, the shaking. It was horrific. Then I found out that it was centered in Northridge -- a good 12 miles away. Three days later, I was in Northridge (I worked there at the time), putting our office back together (nothing was left standing). The Bullocks that collapsed was right down the street from the office, so that was ground zero more or less. We were outside on the patio having lunch when the two 5.0s hit.... I went screaming like a banshee into the parking lot, and everyone else was just staring at me.

They said that was nothing.... being right IN IT was worse. The 6.9 in Pasadena felt as strong as the 5.0 did to me at ground zero. I can't even imagine.

One thing I did do after that was to get trained. I took a gazillion courses in urban search & rescue, triage, first aid, cpr, etc. I was trained by paramedics and the guys who do this for a living. They had a destroyed elementary school they used, and we had to crawl in on our bellies to 'rescue' victims in a one hour period (cause that's kinda all you got for those that are seriously injured). First time I did it, I got to the part where I could stand up, and brushed away some wires that were hanging down from the ceiling. I was dead (the wires were live). Back of the hand, back of the hand... the muscles in your hand will contract if they get a surge of electricity... so you clear a room with the back of your hand instead, you arm will bounce off the wire, not contract around it. Little things....I have bags upon bags of ERT team supplies. If something goes down, I could actually help. I prefer helping than standing there doing nothing and being part of the problem.

I can noticed you all seem are not used to earthquakes...i already past through two big of those..one more than 8.0 and other 9.0..95' and 2007 in the north of Chile (the good thing that my city is build over rocks so most of the people were jusf fine)...they are scary sometimes but i'm too used to them already, is part of life

Wow! Now that's being proactive! That's a good idea.
