I hear a helluva lot more Jackie Wilson in Steve Perry than I do Sam Cooke. No one could match the smoothness and distinct delivery of Sam's voice...not even Perry. Perry did however match Jackie's power...and that's saying a lot!!! I can hear the Sam influence, Phyllis...just not as much as JW. :)
Thats cool..thats how you hear it.....and I kinda agree.....was just pointing out that Perry has said that Sam Cooke was his biggest influence....he has never claimed he sounded just like him has he?...I don't think so...just said he was his biggest influence......and you said it was JW....which wasn't accurate.
... Yes..I agree Perry had more power.....but you can hear how close his sound is to SC in this....was he mimicking Cooke?...no ......but, as you said..the style and delivery and the influence is there to hear. 8)

I hear both, but more of Cooke's phrasing, especially circa Street Talk/ROR. Key thing for Cooke though is that live vs studio was VERY different. The guy was a gospel singer prior to going pop, and that side of him was largely diluted on the pop material. If you get away from the Copa live recording and on to something like the Harlem Square Club live cd, it is VERY prominent--even on the pop songs. If you are only going by Sam Cooke's big hits, you are only getting a small portion of who he was as a singer.

Either way, you can tell both were major influences on Perry.

The original Eagles lineup with The original Little River Band line up doing an album together, the harmonies would be awesome.

The Eagles with John Cowan would be incredible, too. 8)

Agreed....I think that maybe the difference with Cooke singing pop songs and gospel is due to how he was "feeling" the music...the gospel he may have felt more in his heart and his soulfulness due to that is heard more....you can also notice that a little in Al Green as well.
...and thats the biggest difference between a good singer and a great singer....a good singer might have a great sounding voice but if their just singing words then they don't reach their full potential and it's lacking.....a great singer is able to really feel what their singing ..the ones that can project their emotion into their voice...so you can hear their soul in their voice. Thats what makes Perry's stand out so much...not only his vocal abilities and his mastery of them..but by the emotion he projected into his voice as well.
