Omg, I watched that.
That was wild as shit, when they showed the inside of his throat while he sang!!

Nat Geo: How were you able to get access to film Steven Tyler of Aerosmith from the inside out?

Chad Cohen: Steven had recently come to Dr. Steven Zeitels of Massachusetts General Hospital with a vocal bleed that had caused the band to cancel part of its tour. Dr. Zeitels pioneered a noninvasive method of laser surgery that zaps the blood vessels, sealing them off and stopping the bleeding. Steven was very impressed with the surgery and happy that his voice was working again. Both he and Dr. Zeitels were interested in getting the story of the technology out there, and I think they trusted National Geographic Channel to tell it in the way it should be told.

Nat Geo: What was it like filming the live sequence with Steven during the concert?

Chad Cohen: It was crazy backstage, not the sort of place a National Geographic producer usually finds himself. Steven was a pleasure to work with and was really interested in learning how his voice actually worked. The doctors hooked him up with devices to measure the speed of his vocal cords and to monitor his heart rate and respiration rate during the live performance. It was hilarious when he went out on stage and said, “Thank you to Massachusetts General Hospital and National Geographic for getting me ‘more wired’ than I have ever been before.” During the concert, we recorded how many times his vocal cords flapped together — it was more than 500,000 times, and his vocal cords traveled more than six miles over the course of the show. No one has ever recorded real-time data like that during a rock concert.

He has always laughed like that. His voice sounds the same to me. I am a woman, and believe me I pay attention. I love all this speculation over a 3 or 4 minute interview. Oh, he sounds Raspy! Can he still sing? Will the world come to an end? Get a grip folks! LOL! If he puts something out then we can decide.

I beg to differ.. His speaking voice is different.. Stronger and not so airy. Listen back to older interviews.. The rasp in his speaking is at least 50% less than ANYTHING I have heard come out of his mouth in the last 10 years..

The laugh is the biggest give away because when you laugh your voice goes in to a higher register and when Perry would laugh you could hear lots of crack almost like someone with a bad chest cold laughing...
That has been present in his laugh for at least 15 years.. Listen to escape interviews where he laughs and notice it doesnt "break up" This started around ROR and got worse as time went on..

His speaking voice on behind the music was very troubled.. If you look up the symptoms of vocal nodules he hit every sing one to a T and it should be no shock.. The guy sang his ass off for a long time and had some other "things" that would contribute to vocal cord thickening and wear... Steven Tyler is proof that with proper treatment and a little luck you can get it back. He is 60 and listen to him sing Dream on from their last tour vs Dream on pre surgery... The difference is huge and now he sounds like he is 25 again. It is quite amazing really.

Sorry I will trust witnesses like Lora and Cyndy, and others who know the man, and have heard him sing. I don't wish to speculate on things I have no proof of. Cut the guy some slack! Geez it seems some just cannot be happy if they don't start the doomsday gossip. And that is all this is is gossip. I will wait until he releases some material. Silly thing to go on about considering we do not know the man, and your using a recorded interview that is so short to make all your predictions on.

No doomsday here. Just the opposite. I was saying (and I do have some insider info) that Perry's voice was messed up. Have you heard some of the FTLOSM boots ? Geesh... His voice was toast and he was croaking everywhere on some of those.. Felt sorry for him and I cant even listen to that stuff. Almost all long term singers have this happen... Jss, Klause Mein, and a few others I cant think of had nodes removed. Would you believe that Klause had one removed in like 82 ?!?

Toast was his word and it meant more than just his body being tired... I am saying he sounds better than ever even though it was short it is enough to hear a difference from someone that has been paying very close attention and someone (me) that knows well how the voice works and what certain voice issues sound like.. He cords were not closing tight enough and that lets air escape which you started to hear on Frontiers... Its all good.

... I never doubted that he could sing. The question is can he sing good enough to please himself ! He could release a cd of him self singing

Oh dogturd, oh dogturd.. Whoa a whoa a woo Dogturd and people would run out and buy it myself included.. I would like to hear him soar again not just release some humdrum ballad heavy male version of a Celine Dion record..

Well, I don't know who your "sources" are. But I trust in the ones that know him best. I won't join in the gossip mill. Steve's voice has always had presence, and regardless of weather it is a sense of a baratone or tenor. I would love to hear it. Wonder if you would like the tables turned on you if you were in his shoes. I just never cared for idle gossiping, especially negitive in nature. Maybe that is not your angle.

Sorry artist4perry, but I don't believe anyone is talking smack or gossiping here. LD simply offered his opinion (and great accurate knowledge, may I add) on some of the things that can happen to a pro singer of Steve's caliber...And I am sure that SP went through some really nasty times with his voice.
That's not gossip, it's just what happens to the singers who overwork their pipes, unfortunately. SP was sure one of those who did.

I've listened to the interview earlier and noticed the improvement of his speaking voice. If he treated his cords, then good for him. The positive results are obvious.

Gotta share this with you guys, when I heard Dennis Miller say something to Perry about having his face on Mount Rushmore, I about died! A week or two ago I made this picture for laughs with a friend who said his image should be on Mount Rushmore. It is very quickly done, and badly put together on Paint. But I about fell out of my chair. Talk about irony!

Note I revised my thread. I don't know what LD's angle is. I just don't want to speculate. I think it would be unfair to do so without his input on it. I cannot stop anyone else if they want to. I just disagree that his voice was so damaged as some speculate. And bottom line that is what it is, speculation. People who are close to him seem to have a different take.

Hey, *Laura! Good to see you here again. 8) \~/

RE: Steve's voice:

All I can say is.....I can "hear" a HUGE SMILE on his face as he was talking. :D

To me, he's sounding very relaxed....which could POSSIBLY lead to the "ease" of his speaking voice....dunno...hmmmm.....

Laura is back!

Hello! You have been missed terribly. Where did you go?

"Nodes" is such a misleading term. They're actually callouses.

Anyway, LD is spot-on in his analysis. Years of singing covers in my tessitura (too much Hagar and Delp) gave me laryngeal polyps and nodules. I basically didn't speak out loud for two years (this was back in the mid-90's, mind you). My voice was never the same. So now I give lessons...and hopefully the same thing won't happen to any of my students.
But around town, it was well known...when they got home at night
Their fat and psychopathic wives
Would thrash them within inches of their lives!

Nope. The Science Channel. That, and downloading some Gotthard. Great stuff.
