Arnel did a superb job of impersonating Steve Perry.

I was happy they played it. Everything else I've heard before, so it was a nice change.

Bullshit. He sang the song with the timbre Perry lacked at that time. How 'bout Deen on backing vox?!?!?! You guys hear that?!?!?! :D That was really good. Crowd seemed to think so.

This is a song they should they should have included on disc 1 and put FITHL on disc 2. Since there is no live Perry version (that we know of) Arnel nails it as far as I'm concerned.

I'll agree that was REALLY good! But disagree on the timbre, loved Perry's timbre/tone and emotion he brought to that one. But Arnel did an amazing job and what I liked most is he seemed to change up how Perry sang some of the words........I loved it....and respect that. :)

You're right, Deb...I retract that stupid statement. Perry's timbre on that song was awesome. He made up for lost range and showed the ARTIST he was. That's what always made him great. The best ever. Can't wait for the new stuff...it's coming. Singing on AI will seal his legacy. Though it's already sealed in this guy's heart.

Perfection on every level. Arnel nailed it. Amazing since it's the end of a long tour that his voice is that good. Neal on guitar, Jonathan's piano, the harmony with the guys on vocals, especially Deen, all added to just a beautiful performance all the way around.

If you really listen to Deen you hear some beautiful stuff. Arnel hit a homerun on that song. Bravo and salamat, Arnel! 8)

I guess I need to buy Trial By Fire. I never really cared about buying that one from the reviews it received. But hearing this makes me want to now.

Yeah, great stuff all around. Deen's background vocals add so much to the song. Great performance.

Neal's guitar is so beautiful on this song but Arnel vocals did nothing for me. I guess the singer either reaches you or doesn't and Arnel just doesn't reach me. Singing the words, singing the notes, nice voice but he does not connect with me on any level. Glad that he is making a connection with others, though.

This is why this song was nominated to the Grammy's. Perry's rendition to this song is so emotional and uplifting and can't be duplicated. Arnel did okay with it, but the way Perry sang this song is just incredible.

Dan, I take back my compliments to you in the other thread (SP fading) . SP's WYLAW is beautifully sung. What he may have lost in his higher register, he more than made up in timbre. And, nobody can touch the emotion he brings to a song .... nobody.

But, I will give Arnel a listen when I get home tonight.

Let's not forget that AP is a big fan of SP and what he might be doing is paying tribute to SP? just saying... :D Besides, however he does this song, he can't win both camps, or all camps...you see? I'm diggin' this one.

I personally don’t feel a need to dissect this and put it up against the original for comparison. But if I must – to me, Arnel sounds nothing like SP in this song. He sounds like Arnel, and he sounds great. Beautiful song, beautiful job!

Arnel's live version can be compared to the original studio version. JMHO.

Not for me. He is not striking out on his own, He has the words and music and the performance of the original to show him the way and he is only following a pattern already set. It shows in the way he sings the song. It's like he is reciting.

Journey is bringing back wonderful memories from their fans' younger days when they play these songs. What better way of doing that by having a vocalist who can sing it as close as possible to the original.

However, if a person's memories of these songs is watching Perry and having moistness in between the thighs or heaven forbid a tightening of the trousers :D then it's no longer about the music but more about the personality. While I see something wrong with that, I still respect it as that is a personal preference. However, people should give credit when it is due. Arnel sang this song (and most of Journey's song for that matter) beautifully. The least we can do is give him kudos. The man deserves it.
