Replace "Nickelback" with "Journey" and it's the 80's all over again.

You've got a point, but at the end of the day, true talent/musicianship needs to be combined with hooks for the music to endure. That is why Journey is still around and why Nickelback won't be 25 years from now.

Critics used the exact same terms when describing Journey 20+ years ago. ;)

Yeah, but the only difference is... THOSE critics were wrong

My point is they slow the songs down very very very noticably just so they can be singalong douchebag rock. Something for the "look how cool I am" people to latch onto. And strangely enough, a lot of these people are the same people that are now totally into that movie Twilight, just because its the big trendy hip thing to be "all about". Trendiness in general makes me want to vomit.

(and let me point out, I don't think there's anything wrong with a song you're able to sing along to... as long as its a good song and not obnoxiously annoying... just that when you're noticeably trying toooo hard to drive that point across in EVERY song your label releases to the airwaves... to the point where nails on a chalkboard while someone is scraping your teeth with a nail file is preferable to listening to it!!!)

Haven't heard too much Shinedown but I've heard lots of good things... Avenged Sevenfold is not my bag, tried them on the recommendation of fellow Dream Theater fans. What should I try from Shinedown?

Avenged Sevenfold are good until the choruses hit and the singer goes all pop-punk-emo then it's all over. Their first few albums were pretty good, then City Of Evil happened and sealed their fate. Gave them a chance at Ozzfest a few years ago and was greatly disappointed at the potential they had, and then the choruses of the song happened and shot those songs to hell.

Shinedown I know nothing about.

You want a modern band that motherfucking rocks? Check out Black Stone Cherry.

And for some reason, as far as bands I've been "partying to" lately... Soilwork has been in that mix very often... really can't explain why... but they are some pretty bad ass "melodic death metal"... though I really don't see the "death" part of the metal with them anymore.

Airbourne sound toooooo much like AC/DC for me. Love AC/DC... don't think they need a clone. Not that Airbourne makes bad music by any stretch of the imagination, it just doesn't sound like their own.

Shinedown is great the singer is awesome, great voice, the band has gone through a major lineup change with only the singer ( brett smith ) and the original drummer in the band founding memeber and original guitarist Jasin Todd was booted out of the band, Ther new Cd Sound of Madness is great, great stage show to saw them once a few years ago with Alter Bridge and 3DD and Shinedown stole the show.

i feel the same way.about four or five years ago i met this gal online and she was pretty hot and happened to live within walking distance and i couldn't believe how lucky i was UNTIL i got to her house.she had that central park dave matthews concert up full blast and asked if i liked them and i meekly said yes but should've said no.i was tortured all night fucking long with that shit and it got so bad i turned down a sure piece of ass just to get the fuck away from listening and i walked home and my ears were thanking me the whole two minutes home.
lol...no way I could have said that I like those fuckers. By about the 3rd song I would have been dripping with sweat and chugging Drano while sticking steak knives in my ears.

I'm not a huge fan, but those guys can play. Carter is a monster drummer. As far as the "jam" bands go, I consider them to be way ahead of many other acts. "Stay-Wasting Time" is a great song, as is "Crash."

Ive always liked Steely Dan. You have to be in the exact right mood for it, but theyve got a couple of clas songs. I ve always loved the lyrics from Deacon blues:

" THey got a name for winners in this world, I want a name when I lose. They call Alabama the Crimson Tide . Call me Deacon Blues."

me and a friend were drinking one day and i got punched in the mouth by a yes geek back in the late 1980's because he showed me a yes album and asked me to comment on it.i told him to let me think about it for a minute and told him i'd be right back.i went to the bathroom and defacated on this album titled fragile by yes.i brought it back and told him yes its fragile be careful, lol.he didn't take kindly to it but thats what i thought.after he punched me in the mouth i rared back and knocked that fuckers glasses off his face and rearranged his damn nose for him too.he said to get out of his house and don't ever come back and me and my friend made sure if we were going to hang out and party to make sure before hand what the musical entertainment would be.you'll shoot me first before i lay around listening to shit like yes, dave matthews, etc.

Yeah, they seem like a glorified stoner/college band at best... but probably why they're such a phenomenon among trendy college kids and stoners... especially the latter. For some reason they get to play TWO dates in Pittsburgh almost every year, and end up selling out both... WTF?

Steely Dan- HATE them. All of my fellow musician buddies are like "ooh, listen to the chords and inversions they use, blah blah blah". I don't care. Their music and their singer blows. Hate that band.

No question that DMB are good players- BUT just because you can play fast or intricate stuff doesn't give someone's music merit. You HAVE to be stoned to appreciate them I guess. Just like the Grateful Dead. When the drugs wore off, their audience went "JEEZUS! These guys SUCK"

I loved the Busted Stuff album - both versions released and unreleased - but hated pretty much everything else they have ever released. Go figure!

For the record I am not a stoner and am far beyond college!
