The lack of correct pronunciation was one of the reasons why I didn't approve of the choice to have Arnel sing for Journey early on. Summer came and went, and he reportedly improved. Cool. Now, with a month plus back home, the annunciation issue is back. If I go back east and spend any longer than a month, I start talking "Philly" without even noticing. "Yo...let's go to thuh mawl". I felt like all the work he did over the summer went to the toilet. I was really disappointed.
Arnel should have been back in the US for two weeks prior to this event, training with the band. His health would have not been an issue, as the diction. I can't just roll this into "the cold" excuse. C'mon. I applaud him apologizing, but the cold excuse... enough. He's 40, 41? He needs to do what he needs to do... this gig comes once in a lifetime, and he's fuckin' it up. That and working with someone on stage presence would help too... sorry... I'm still not sold on this guy at all. I can't tell you how frustrating that is, to love the music but hate hearing it now. argh.
Good points. I think the whole celebrity thing took off for him and he didn't know how to handle it. I think he has been on a wild rollercoaster ride ever since Neal first called him, and the Superbowl event was the first sign that Arnel is not an experienced veteran of the rock music industry like the rest of the guys in Journey are. Maybe Arnel didn't know how to say "no" to all of the interviews, charity events, media events, and everything else that came at him as a result of Journey discovering him. It's like some guy playing in a local cover band and then he wins the lottery. No one knows how he will handle this level of success until he goes through it and proves himself.
Does this mean Arnel has failed? No, but you know how image-conscious Neal is... this was not the feather in his cap that he wanted it to be. You know why? It's because Neal wanted Arnel to kick some serious ass in front of millions of SuperBowl viewers to prove that Journey's success is not due to Steve Perry's unique vocals (the same motive that fueled re-recording the classics). That didn't happen. SuperBowl viewers did not hear the Arnel that Neal heard on YouTube, nor the one who sang on Revelation. I was pretty shocked myself at what I heard. In addition, if there was ever a possibility for Steve Perry to see Journey with Arnel (short of buying a concert ticket or the Revelation DVD), my guess is that the SuperBowl gig would be it. I am sure that Neal wanted to deliver a near-perfect performance that night, and unfortunately Arnel had an off-night. Oh well, the only damage was to Neal's ego.
To me, Arnel looked like he is exhausted and stressed-out during the SuperBowl gig... possibly even burned-out. I'm sure that he now has a much deeper respect for why Perry, Augeri, and Soto are all no longer in Journey.
I hope Arnel doesn't let this get to him. He needs to remember that wearing Perry's shoes will require some thick skin. Steve Perry is an American icon, and therefore he has some big shoes. Arnel does a better job walking in them than most singers would, but they are still impossible shoes to walk in. Arnel will always be compared to Steve Perry, and he will never satisfy the Perry loons because no one can duplicate the personna, style, skill, charsima, passion, charm, and talent of another artist.
