I won't go for the obvious ones here, like Journey and JSS, as you already know all about them, so here's my pick of bands to look out for:-
Rush
This band excels on so many levels. Musicianship, both individually and collectively. Their live performance. The quality of their live ‘show’ (ie the videos, the lighting etc). The songwriting. The lyrics…. I could go on.
Thunder
The best rock band never to have made it really big, without a doubt (An accident of timing. Like JSS, Thunder's brand of melodic rock got completely scuppered by the advent of grunge in the early 90's and no radio stations would play them). Fantastic songs played with gusto and humour, as well as skill. Thunder really engage with their audience to put on a show you can’t help but enjoy. They also do everything themselves – run their own website, do all their own promotion, manage their own tours etc etc.
Joe Bonamassa
Often described as the best blues guitarist of his generation (he’s in his early 30’s). I’d say he’s probably one of the best blues guitarists of any generation. However you have to see him live to really appreciate what he can do. His albums are superb, particularly the last two, but they don’t begin to describe the quality of his musicianship live. The last time I saw him, I looked around and there were experienced guitarists in the audience with jaws agape, watching in absolute awe.
Ian Hunter
Ian’s former band Mott The Hoople were a great band in the early 70’s. Since then Ian has been solo and is regarded as one of the best lyricists ever to come out of the UK. Sort of like Bob Dylan, but without the angst and with a voice you can actually understand. His ballads are very poignant and moving, his rockers are pure rhythm and blues foot stomping belters.
Gun
Gun’s debut album, ‘Taking on the World’, released around 1989 I think, remains in my opinion the best debut album I’ve ever heard. What is even more remarkable is that the AVERAGE age of the band at that time was just 17. It really is a stunning sophisticated album, a little like U2 in places, like UFO in others. All their subsequent albums are good solid rock albums.
