I guess my point was that Journey has played MANY obscure tunes in the past 10 years live. And by obscure, I mean album cuts, like:
EDGE OF THE BLADE
RUBICON
CHAIN REACTION
LINE OF FIRE
MOTHER, FATHER
KEEP ON RUNNIN'
DEAD OR ALIVE
WHERE WERE YOU
LA DO DA
PATEINTLY

During the above songs, most of the crowd doesn't really know the song. ( at least when I've seen them in Detroit, which is always a sell out crowd) I'm fine with any of those, as I have all of Journey's stuff and love it.

I just wondered why they didn't pull a tune from "Evolution" more often. But I agree that Perry was really up there on most of those tunes. "Just the Same Way" would go over well live I think, and I can always hope to hear LTS and COTA.

I love Departure, though it's a uneven album and has some simplistic lyrics. True, a few of Perry's high-pitched vocals on here can get on my nerves, like Mariah Carey can at times. I don't like Homemade Love at all. His vocals grate to me. But he shines on many of these songs, even though I wouldn't call it rock without Neal playing. Though People and Places, one of my favorites, is rock on here. Love it. Stay Awhile.

But on I'm Crying, his vocals are out of this world, as is the bonus track on the reissue, Little Girl - unbelievably beautiful.

That's what I like about Journey, the evolution of their music. If Perry's voice had stayed like this, they wouldn't have been as great longevitywise (to me, only opinion), as I love his richer voice on Faithfully, Send Her My Love, Still They Ride, etc. But Departure is still a great CD I love to listen to, as is definitely Infinity, one of my favorites. I really enjoy Evolution too. I would never consider them garbage, SJ, like you stated earlier.

Two of my absolute favorites! Thanks for that. This is clearly Journey at their best before fag boy Friga came along and they were still a real rock band. Sweet and Simple has Perry's highest recorded note on record (I think). Let's see Arnel sing that one day in and day out. That would have even strained Perry's milk.

I don't really care about who can hit the highest notes. Trying to say that Escape and Frontiers aren't Journey's two best albums is just silly. While it is subjective, the vast majority of consumers seem to agree with me. The "corporate" label has always been bullshit anyway. Just a way for jealous music writers to dismiss the fact that Perry is the greatest vocalist ever and that Schon is (at least one of) the best melodic guitarist of all-time. Time has proven these fucktwats to be very, very wrong.

I'll just go out and say it, but too often anymore I hate going to shows here in America because all the supposed "fans" want to hear are the big radio hits, and otherwise just stand there, or go off to go to the bathroom or fill up on more beer, or you get the dudes that are already too wasted yelling "play something good" as soon as its a song they don't recognize. Seriously, it is an embarrassment to me as an American concertgoer to have to put up with that crap. Why do people want the same songs over and over again? Why are we so obsessed with pop mentality as far & nostalgia... and not the music, like it should be? Bands don't seem to have that problem nearly as much in other countries... what am I missing??? Should I just start saving up for plane fare to go to concerts in other countries where they actually want to hear a variety of tunes from a band's entire catalog? Is that what it's going to have to come to?????

...bring on the Evolution tunes!!!! Hell, do a set of nothing but material from Infinity-Departure. I'd be all for it, but the drunken radio-brainwashed masses would ruin those shows.

I disagree. His voice on those albums, trading off with Rolie's vocals and Schon's guitar is what turned me onto the group. Once Cain joined them...they turned to a "pop" sound that totally changed the band. I still liked them...just not as before. I preferred the nuts in the vice to the rasp. That's just me.

Garbage is strong. I didn't care much for ROR, but I wouldn't call it garbage.

As I've mentioned several other times and in polls here....Evolution is my #2 favorite album behind Escape. There are so many great moments on this album. To me, it was the band's best album in the Gregg Rollie era AND.... had Steve Smith on drums for the first time. Great Album! Will always be right up there as an all time favorite.

ROR is the second best Journey album to lay down and pass out to while really drunk or wasted... the first being Frontiers. That being said... Frontiers is my favorite Journey album (and one of my favorite albums in general) and ROR is one of my least fav, depending on my mood though that changes. Either are great drunk listens for sure though, especially if you have a good system for it. If no one's created a thread for best albums to listen to while drunk, someone should... maybe I will. Would definitely be an interesting topic, especially the probable embarrassment of some of the albums that will show up on there.
