Cant wait to make the drive up dude. Cant wait. Man how I would love to drum for you guys.. I got my Smitty down dude. I can play EVERY Journey track cleanly but alas. I live down here and you guys have a solid drummer anyway. It would be so much fun to play my favorite music and sing backups with you guys ! I love my Pink Floyd tribute but Journey comes in 1st these days. Did Kit have dark curly hair ? If so that guy was a freaking monster. Near flawless feel and execution..

I don't remember what he looked like back in the day. Only recently. It's possible that some of those guys may come out to the Fox show as well.

I hear great things about your Pink Floyd tribute. Would love to see you guys live as well.

There is just somethng about Journey.......

You might note that some video isnt synced up with the audio. This is because the hi res vids are from a show we did on a wed night, the far away cam video is from Fri night and all of the audio is from that same Friday show at the same venue.

Oh and BTW this was only our 2nd show ever. We worked out the bugs on the wed show which had lower attendance because it was a weeknight and Halloween. The Fri show is the far away cam shots and all of the audio. The close up shots are all from the Wed show. We practiced our asses off and got to do a show by ourselves at the venue on Tue night when they were closed which helped a bunch. A lot of stuff going on up there with the keyboard played triggering everything but the kitchen sink !

Looks like a fantastic experience from the videos -- a real group effort! No music background or anything of the kind, but I sure can appreciate the many talented musicians on this board. Enjoyed the interview, too, LD. Brings back the music of my era, although Pink Floyd was a little too hard rock for my taste (at the time). Funny ... now, I like my music LOUD. Drives my husband and boys crazy, lol.

Sorry, but de-tuning is a crutch. :D

Yeah, it is. Play it along with SW from the album. It's pretty clear that it is. That's what I had to do to be proven that it was, because I didn't believe it either.

The debate rages on... :D Sounds great regardless, Arnel has found his comfort zone with Journey.

Detuning is for pussies? lol.

Had they done that sooner, Perry might still be a part of the band. This catalogue is evidently among the very hardest to sing in all technical aspects. Particularly given that the songs were centered around a counter tenor voice, you have songs that run the gamut from shit like "Mother, Father" and the '70s superfuckinghigh vocal acrobatics to the grittier, more powerful performances of the mid and late 80s. That's a difficult transition to make night after night, particularly given the frequency of shows, the physicality of Arnel's performance, and the fact that he's 40+ years old. Hell, has the man even been immunized?

Now I don't know about Kelty, but Journey tours a lot. If he's only doing a couple of shows, then it's no fucking wonder he does it so well. If he tours a lot, too, then I'll concede that point.

It's not being taken down to the level that it was when Perry sang it at the Graham reunion (was that a half-step or full step?) and the songs still sound fantastic. It could be a pre-emptive measure to ensure that what happened to Perry and Augeri doesn't happen to Arnel.

In short? It's the smart thing to do.

If you're a pussy it's the smart thing to do. The Graham gig was detuned and sounded decent because the king, Steve Perry, was singing those songs. The dude could sing two steps down and it would sound good. Perry did not put up with a tune down because the dude had class and understood the impact that detuning would have to the legacy of Journey. I'm firmly convinced the reason Perry quit was because the dude was on the ragged edge of failure every show and did not want to disappoint his fans. The dude was a dick and treated the fans like shit but this is a plausible reason for some of the shit he did.

If you getting a hired gun, get a fucking good one. Lets see who could be in the running:

1. Hugo
2. Chalfant
3. Hunsciker
4. Kelty
5. The latest tribute dude on here, blah blah

At the end of the day, there are several folks capable of delivering. If the band is going to detune, go get Perry and drop two steps with the tour. Fuck, better yet, let's just tune Neal to drop D and have him do the one finger boogie while covering Nickleback and Creed covers on tour.

Journey's legacy is only retained with the music played in it's original key. It does not have the impact, nor does it convey the emotion of the written material, when detuned. The difference between God's music and devil music is only a full step so ....

Get someone capable or call it a fucking day ....

I will have to say that SP is probably the hardest vocalist to cover consistently long-term. He doesn't necessarily sing higher than everyone, it is just the lyrical lines and his tone that make it what it is. I doubt that anyone, Jason included, could do it night after night after night after........ However, we have no plans to play every night. :o)

There are a lot of band with less challenging vocals that drop them a half step live. Seems to be the direction that things are moving. However, it is not "just" a half-step. Different keys just SOUND different to the trained ear.

95% of the people wouldn't notice the difference (OK, only 25% of the people on THIS blog, but you get my drift), and maybe it would have helped SP. Nobody will ever know for sure.

I agree, it's not an easy gig night after night but I think it can be done with the right person. Like I've said, a half step down is for pussies, bottom line. The music is not the same detuned, agreed. When are you guys coming to Indiana so I can hear you and Kelty again?

I've got a Western Civ. test to fail tomorrow, otherwise I'd argue this. I'll do it tomorrow, if you want; we can have a little pow wow of differing opinions.

This is an IOU for a debate and we can cash it in tomorrow.

We have a player, good deal. SRV rocked but when he detuned .... and the same goes for Hendrix. If a fucking monkey can play it with one finger, and they can, I'll stick to my guns.

Now as far as this mister shit goes with Hedrix, can really say that to a dude that died with a fucking smack needle hanging out of his arm? That's a pretty loose interpretation of Mr. I think ...

Hugo wasn't detuned for his Valentine show a few weeks ago on Long Island.

I've got a Western Civ. test to fail tomorrow, otherwise I'd argue this. I'll do it tomorrow, if you want; we can have a little pow wow of differing opinions.

This is an IOU for a debate and we can cash it in tomorrow.

Not sure yet, but people here will be the first to know. If you (or anyone) know of large venues that specialize in tribute acts in your area, let me know.

Paul,

Once you guys get going and have your show fine tuned, live vid and audio up I can help you get a gig at two of the biggest bars in Louisville. City block and Phoenix Hill tavern. I know the booking agents from my PInk Floyd tribute shows. Just say the word, get me a press kit when the time comes and I will be happy to shop it for you as long as I get to get up and drum on a song !! Hehe... Preferably Escape which is my favorite Journey song to play on drums.

The tiger was never "replaced" only copied. I can put you in touch with the right people, show them your site, let them hear the demos (live demos would be preferable) and then you can negotiate the money aspects. We sold out the largest club in louisville 2 nights in a row with the floyd thing because of thier PR work.. IF you can put together a nice professonal promo kit and blow them away with the sound they will advertise the fuck out of it because they want to fill their club of course. The bar takes up one sqaure city block hence the name and is really 4 bars in one. Great venue, KILLER SOUND SYSTEM too. Their lights are MEH however... City block is the club you see in my Floyd tribute vids. Phoenix hill is like Toy Tiger only bigger and with 3 stages.

Now as far as this mister shit goes with Hedrix, can really say that to a dude that died with a fucking smack needle hanging out of his arm? That's a pretty loose interpretation of Mr. I think ...

Aaron wrote:If you're a pussy it's the smart thing to do.

Yeah, it is. Play it along with SW from the album. It's pretty clear that it is. That's what I had to do to be proven that it was, because I didn't believe it either.

Great video. Loved the performance. Neal looks like a happy camper. When are they going to post Florida dates? :?
