Bear in mind, where I was diving is where they filmed all the live action shark sequences in "Jaws".   I'm telling you, I walked water to get back in the boat, and spent a good 20 minutes swearing at my instructor

That sentence perfectly expressed the utter terror and rush of adrenalin that must have consumed you as you were trying to get back in the boat.

Note to Jim... please do not get eaten by a shark before I get a chance to party with ya. Kthx.

Seriously, I'm glad you're ok and the you got away from it. I'm pretty sure that would have been the end of any kind of swimming that weekend if it were me. Then again, I can't swim to begin with so I'd be to afraid to go ito shark waters anyway. I'd be the beer-drinking vacationer reading Cosmo on the beach watching you race for your life with Jaws up your ass.

G.I.Jim wrote:Hey everyone,

I HAD to come in here and tell you about my experience at Myrtle beach this weekend. Friday my wife, my son, my nephew and I headed to the beach for the weekend. We got there around lunch time, and decided to go to the beach. I like to boogey-board, so when we got there I went out looking for some waves. I was out there for a little over an hour (and had caught some really decent waves), and I saw something out of the corner of my eye. A second later, a fin appeared out of the water about 8 or 9 feet right in front of me! It was a 5-6 foot shark, and it was literally between me and the beach, just kinda swimming in place!!! It turned on it's side, and it's side fin came all the way out of the water (keep in mind, I could have almost reached out and touched this thing!). I could clearly see it's gills and light colored underbelly eliminating the possibility of a dolphin. It then turned towards me and dove, almost like it was circling behind me.

I"VE NEVER MOVED SO FUCKING FAST IN MY LIFE!!! I say again...  I hauled ASS through that water (by the way, have you ever tried to run in water over waist deep? ), and my wife was wondering why I looked the way I did when I got to the beach. Needless to say, I was texting everybody I knew while I was sitting there on the beach catching my composure (Deano got a text ), and my hands were shaking so damn bad that I kept fucking up the words!

That was something that I'll NEVER forget as long as I live. I was nervous as hell, but I spent the entire next day in the water catching waves. It was a blast! I did see 2 other sharks, but they were much further away. One was probably 8 to 10 feet long, and it jumped all the way out of the water chasing a fish. The funny thing was, I was talking to another guy out there who was swimming next to me about my encounter the previous day RIGHT when it jumped. That thing made a loud splash as it came back down, and was one of the coolest things I've ever seen! I think it scared the SHIT out of him, as he didn't stay out there long after that.

I also talked to a couple of old guys right after that, and they said they saw 4 sharks right up next to the beach and they were apparently chasing some school of fish. I always knew that they are right there in the area, but that shit is a little freaky to see close up. I guess I had statistics on my side. Not to mention...it'd have to be a big-ass shark to mistake ME for some food.

OH HELL!! I bet you looked like you were walking on water. LOL

Glad you're alright./

You would be surprised how many sharks swim around people everyday. I lived by the beach for 15 years and I was told for every 1 shark you see there could be up to 10 more swimming close by. Like someone else said, most shark attacks on humans are accidents. But like the old saying goes "It's an accident waiting to happen".

treetopovskaya wrote:do you know what type of shark? jumped out of water? sounds like they could have been white sharks... if it was only 5-6 feet it was just a baby... woudn't have attacked you. how awesome! my hubby used to surf off san onofre here in socal... the white sharks use that area as a nursery... the sharks swim around surfers waiting for waves. the media makes such a big deal about it every summer... surfers think nothing of it... i think it's awesome that my hubby surfed with white sharks... even if they were just babies.

People have definitely been attacked by baby white sharks but it's rare in general for any shark to attack any humans. People have actually swam in open waters with white sharks and been fine.

Yeah Buddy, that's why I don't like getting in the water, cause once you do, you pretty much kiss thousands of years of evolution out the door and jump right back into the food chain. When I was assigned to a carrier back in the 80's, one of the wonderful duties our department had was to go under the carrier and check for anything like bombs and/or tracking devices that may have been attached to the ship by commies, terrorists and the like. We would do this within hours of pulling out of wherever we were. I remember once we were getting ready to pull out of a place called Diego Garcia and we're under the ship inspecting the water inlets of the ship (they suck in sea water and make drinking water out of it) and low and behold, something like a 15 fucking foot shark goes swimming up past us. What sucks is, the Navy never gave us bang sticks or any other types of safety gear for this type of situation. Our gripe was they won't do anything about it until someone gets seriously injured or killed. So seeing a shark face to face while in the water is one thing that will catch your undivided attention which lasts for days on end!
