Yep, "You Can Tune a Piano but You Can't Tuna Fish" best album name ever!

This is up there for me as well. They peaked here. While they found commercial success with Hi Infidelity, it was the beginning of the end for me. A Decade of Rock and Roll is still one of my favorite compilations.

Also, I agree about Back on the Road Again...awesome rocker and one of my favorite REO songs. Love the old stuff Golden Country, Son of a Poor Man, Keep Pushin', Time is gonna Come... Those were the days.

Hi Infidelity was a great album, loaded with hits such as "Dont let him go", "Take it on the run", "Keep on loving you", and "tough guys". One of the first REO albums I bought. I also really like the album Wheel are Turning which includes the hits "Cant fight this feeling", and "One lonely night".

Gary can be found bumping around Lamp post pizza in Newbury park, CA. He usually trolls the parking lot looking for edible grub tossed into the garbage bins, and he always has a brown bag with a cheap bottle of Merlot in it. I became pretty close to him, as I would go to lamp Post daily after work and get completely drunk, see him outside the window, and end up buying him a large pepperoni pizza. That's where I started to sing like Cronin. He and I would fuck around out there in the lot, and had each other laughing our asses off. He does own a fairly nice house(I'd say about 350-450K), in that neighborhood. Oh and he always wears this God forbidden shit stained 49er's sweatshirt. I had a deep talk with him once about his falling out from the band. he started off angry, complaining that REO Speedwagon had become the Kevin Cronin Band, but after about 60 minutes and 2 more bottles of merlot, he was blaming himself for alcohol abuse as well as the inability to eat right and stay clean altogether. Cronin wanted the band to really get in shape and they did so for the most part- except Gary. Gary played a mean axe. He had a sound uniquely his own. Now Cronin lives in Agoura Hills and Gary lives in Newbury Park. Next time I am up there(60 miles west of me), I will find that cockroach and drive him to Cronins' house.

Note- last time I saw Gary was last year.

PS- For the record, I personally think REO continued to make good music. Good Trouble was ok, and Wheels was superb i thought. Also, I found the Earth, a Small man, his Dog and a Chicken was great. I like Building a Bridge a lot as well. The new one though, Cronin sounds thinner than Lindsay Lohan's pussy lips.

If you think about it, from the early 80's when REO, Twigs and Journey all were fairly big, I'd say that REO from mid 80's onward, made the better music of the three. Life as We Know It was a great record, IMO. Twigs and Journey had singer issues, and REO, well, they had the Cronin issue, and I frankly think that's why they get a bad rap. Put all three of those bands together for a raw hour set, playing requests and jamming, and i would wager REO would own em all. Listen to Unidentified Flying Turkey Trot, 157 Riverside and Rollin' with the Changes, and those songs are all blistering jam rock songs.

I actually have a boot the year of or the year after the BTM were Gary played encore for 3 or 3 songs with the band.

Any audio/video of this uploaded anywhere?

All I have is a cd of it.

I'll upload it here in the near future. We are in the process of turning our garage in into a master bedroom. All my cds 1,200+ are in boxes and crates, and no longer in any certain order. It would be like finding a needle in a haystack right now to go pull the one cd I need.

Richrath was awesome, but his best guitar work can certainly be found pre-HI days. But I'm a pretty big fan of REO's overall output, especially through the 80s. The more recent stuff has had its moments too.

The new guitarist Dave is good, but he doesn't have that unique sound that Gary had.

On the flip side, the harmonies in the band really stepped up when Dave came along. I have some old, old, vintage REO live discs where they sang no harmony live, which just wasn't right given how prevalent they've always been, even on the old stuff. Dave also seems like a really cool guy, and he has an incredible guitar collection

I wasn't taking anything from Dave. Seen them in concert with both Dave and Gary. Gary would never go all over the stage and seemed to be almost shy or afraid of the audience. Dave doesn't have that problem. Dave seems a very alive and warm on stage, and you are right about the harmonies now.

Oh I know you weren't - I do know some hardliners that refuse to see REO now with Dave there, which seems kinda silly to me. I mean Gary was a good player and all but far from inimitable (I think Dave does a fine job of doing so). Plus, he's been in the band 20 years - it's not like he's a hired gun hiding behind his speaker cabs!
