I don't think this song works out well live. ????

Well, I'm not sure if WCTNGOF works out well live either. They're playing a stripped down version without the big finish at the end which was really the best part of the song. Like Matt brought up earlier, is it more the mystique of the song not being played that is fanning its popularity at the moment? Musically, it's not much of a masterpiece at all when you really look at it.
With a new album coming out, that could really be the deathknell for WIN, TDTWT and even WDILYL being played live as more room will have to be made for new material again.
If they play the normal venues like in 2008, they'll probably have an opening act , so shorter setlist again. They want to get away from the ballads, yet they always end up being their best songs when they release anything.

Gonna be tough to break away from ballads, when a large part of your song writing staff is into ballads. *cough CAIN cough* Maybe they just need to work on getting on the radio again.
They could play more of the new songs if anyone knew what they were but they don't get aired so nobody at the concerts knows them.

Hmm agh this is a tough one.

I've heard TDTWT live before.. but never WCTNGOF...

Normally I'm all in favour of new tracks... but to hear that song live would be amazing.. however they would have to do the end bit, it's probably the only reason I listen to the song all the way to the end.

Take off Open Arms and Faithfully for the two Rev tracks if you wish.

IMO, some songs in the Journey catalog are not meant to be sung by anyone other than SP. WCTNGOF is one of those songs, and since Patiently was the very first song written by the SP/NS team, I think it should be kept out of it too.

I guarantee you if you put AP a studio environment on that song he will turn out a rendition that will rival the original. Perry never sang WCTNGOF live. Keeping songs out? That's just more of the same loony shit that keeps getting spewed around this place. These are Journey's songs.....Get it? Journey can play whatever songs are in their catalog. It's their band, not Steve Perry's.

I think Arnel did really good on both these songs, and they're really working in the setlist, especially with more practice and tweaking. I would love to hear these live when they come, and I will thoroughly enjoy hearing them by Arnel. But rival the original in the studio by Perry if Arnel did them in the studio? I think you're speaking of WCTNGOF, and not Patiently, but either song you're LEGALLY INSANE thinking that. Nothing can touch the way those songs were delivered by Perry on the original recordings. Perfection.

I don't think he would, and the re-records on "Revelation" are living proof that walking into a studio doesn't recapture something that died 25 years ago. While some of the re-records are very good (I personally think "Only The Young" is VERY close to the original), some aren't close to the original recordings. In fact, I think Arnel sings "Faithfully" much better live than he did on the re-records! That song is missing soooooooo much on the re-record, and its name is Perry!

I'm thinking of starting a different poll because what I have seen here. I'm really surprised by the lack of response for the Revelation songs. Six months ago, people were clamoring for the songs like WDILYL AND WIN. Now after hearing an INCOMPLETE version of WCTNGOF, opinions have shifted. Arnel hasn't even attempted the money notes on that song yet but people seem sold on the performance.
Is Rev going the way of Arrival with casual fans? Is a new album even necessary at this moment?

I think that's the true flaw in your argument. "Casual fans" don't visit websites like these, and "casual fans" could give a shit about "Arrival", "Revelation", or any other one word title that Journey feels like throwing out there. 99% of people showing up at Journey concerts don't visit this website and have zero idea that Journey is on their third lead singer, since Perry left. Hell, I'm sure a good number of them are shocked to learn that "After All These Years", Perry is Asian

Ain't that amazing? All that promotion last year and people are twittering about some asian guy singing, who isn't Steve Perry. Arnel's name seems to allude many despite all the press from the last 18 months.

You had a big 31 votes, 19 to 12 for the older songs. Woopy-doo. No big landslide. And quite a few commented they would like one of each off the combination. And I'm pretty sure most of the casual fans attending the concert won't even know WCTNGOF nor Patiently. So if some of us who frequent this board would like songs we've never heard live or that were never sung live that are older versus Rev, big deal - IMHO, of course.   I chose the older songs for one reason. Arnel is getting older and I've never heard those songs live and this is probably the only year he can pull it off. WIN will be on the DVD and I can hear that another time. But I'm extremely happy with either combo. I'm just happy with any new mixup in the setlist period, actually.

Okay then Jana. Since you seem to have your finger on the pulse of what the regular Journey fan wants, let me ask you specifically, what do you want the next time you see them?
Would you like to hear the two/thirds version of WCTNGOF wrapped into Patiently OR TDTWT and WIN at your show?

If that shit keeps getting spewed, obviously there's good logic behind it.

Journey has a catalog with Arnel now, why in the hell do they need to revisit songs from 20-30 years ago while leaving current songs out of their setlist? I can tell you why. It's because they are trying to capture the Steve Perry era magic that Journey had during that time. Period. As good a singer as Arnel may be, his era of Journey will never deliver that same magic.

They can play whatever songs they want to play. A question was posed to the forum participants and I shared my opinion....Get it? I'm not the one getting my panties in a bunch over it.

I would be estatic to hear either combination or a mixture b/c I love all of those songs and have never heard any of them live. Like I said, I doubt Arnel will be able to sing Patiently/WCTNGOF next year b/c of age, so might just say that combo b/c it's new to me with him live also and doubt after 42 he will be able to sing it again. And he can sing WIN and TDTWT past this year. So slight edge to that combo, but I mean barely and only for that reason. But like I said above, I actually just don't have a preference. Because I've always said Patiently and WCTNGOF are two of my favorite songs of all time for Journey but so is TDTWT. WIN is just awesome live with the extended Neal solo and would love to hear it live. But let me amend my answer to say if there's no chance of hearing the other combo, WIN and TDTWT another year if I pick WCTNGOF and Patiently this year, then I pick TDTWT and WIN.

I didn't say I had the pulse of what the regular Journey fan wants. I said the casual fan probably doesn't know WCTNGOF or Patiently much more than they know WIN or TDTWT. I have no idea what the majority prefers.

Since you seem to have your finger on the pulse of what the regular Journey fan wants, let me ask you spefically, what do you want the next time you see them?
Would you like to hear the two/thirds version of WCTNGOF wrapped into Patiently OR TDTWT and WIN at your show?

If Arnie was singing complete versions of the songs I might agree with you, but the way they have edited it, I think he could sing this medley style for a while yet.
