I predict that Journey will give away "free" copies of their new cd "Irrelevation" at the gates of their South American concert venues. The "free" cd's will also come with "free" cans of refried beans and "free" bunches of plantains!

You have to admit, Neil knows how to make a buck!

I was a Journey fan with Perry, even with Augeri. I came to a realization when I saw JSS butcher SIL in Indianapolis years ago. I don't want to see anyone else thrown out front just for the sake of one man's wallet.

Turned past HDNet and caught some of Live in Manilla, and didn't hear anything that made me feel otherwise. Though I did like hearing some of the Revelation stuff played live.

I'm sitting out unless there's a return of Perry or even Kelty. I'm planning on traveling to see Escape. :D

BINGO.

Seriously, to the Amazing Kreskin Mentality out there that said "Arnel won't last 3 months", Wow, the success rate of your psychic abilities is astounding... Please, throw some psychic stock information our way, won't you?
Journey is going to other countries because there is DEMAND there. When they played Chile last time (Arnel's first gig), the audience went apeshit for them AND Arnel. It was the guy's first gig out of the shoot. It wasn't flawless and it wasn't god horrible, but more importantly, the audience loved it. Watch the show, they absolutely loved it. Not really sure why people don't get "Why are they going there?". Obviously, because they were successful the first time through and there's a demand for them now. It's pretty cool that they are getting to tour the WORLD and not just the US as in years past. Why is that a bad thing?? Why does it bother people so much that the band succeeds now? It's VERY rare for acts from the 80s to be doing well these days. Journey's holding their own through a lot of ups and downs. I'm not sure why that's a bad thing.

Welll.. I guess bands like Bon Jovi and Iron Maiden weren't enough!!

I saw Bon Jovi three times and Iron Maiden six times. Sometimes it's hard to see what's going on outside the US/European market, but I can tell you that South America is a huge market and it's a shame that Journet have not visited us yet, with the exception of the Vina Del Mar concert.

Within next months we'll have concerts of bands/artists like: Iron Maiden, Ozzy, Steve Augeri, Jeff Scott Soto, Motorhead, U2 (three sold-out shows at Morumbi stadium with 80.000 people each). We'll have Rock in Rio next September with Metallica, Slipknot, Motorhead (again), Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Coldplay...
Let's not forget about the Soccer's World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016.

If this is not a place for entertainment...

I agree on many points you made here brywool, except for DEMAND. You have to be careful when you throw out the word, "Demand." Are they playing 2,500 seaters, 10K pavillions or 25,000 seat arenas? Journey will have have a demand here at home to see them, but what kind of demand? They will ALWAYS have a 2500 seat demand, but not a multiple night 18,000 hockey arena demand. Mind you, I am NOT putting them down here and actually praise them for playing the world. Good for them. It absolutely does not bother me in the slightest that they are enjoying moderate success. They are helping to uphold the rock n roll flag from the 70/80/90's.... I would think that a couple factors are in play regarding them playing new, fresh markets, ie, third world states...1- DSB. That song, whether you like it or not, has kept Journey not only afloat, but in the media eye...2- Pineda. Word of mouth from the Phillipines has spread to Chile and Brazil and all the other non 1st world countries...it is a good story and rallies the less fortunate. good for Pineda. and maybe 3- the back catalog. Journey's catalog is it's number 1 crutch. that fucking back calalog keeps them from failing. Thank what's his name for that.

5 of the 8 shows I saw on the Revelation tour exceeded 18,000. The other 2 were sell outs in Vegas (6-8k)and the sold out New York State Fair held about 15,000.

Journey has worked it's way back to being a second tier band, we can all agree on that right? They hit the dregs for a decade or so but were able to climb back up, thanks to opportunistic licensing and a guy who not only can sing but who also who brings his own built in fan base because of his ethnicity and back story. In all probability, the band won't be able to quite make it up to that top step again but they have made great strides over the last three years.

Don, you have no idea how this new CD and tour will do, so why do you speculate? The 2011-12 WORLD tour is already shaping up to be their biggest tour ever, post Perry. Yes, the back catalog is what primarily sells Journey and there's obviously still a huge DEMAND for this band, otherwise why would they spend the time and money traveling to these places. And who knows at this point, the NEW album could take off and surpass Revelation sales. That would just be another added bonus.

What is your point? I was stating where I thought the band is at this moment in popularity but when it comes to it, why shouldn't I speculate? What's the point of being on this message board then? This isn't a band run fan site, obviously. What was derogatory in what I said anyway?

As successful as they were in 1983 when they were a top tier band, no I don't think they will be. If you think I was saying they wouldn't tour as well as they did in 2008, then you misconstrued my post. They are doing about 30 more shows this time around, they should have no problem passing or at least equaling their totals from 2008.
As far as album sales, though I don't see this album surpassing Revelation for the simple reason that is a single disc instead of a three disc set. No DVD and no bonus disc to be counted. Also, there is the hard fact that album sales have declined about 30 percent just in the few short years since Revelation came out. Even Bon Jovi's last release barely went platinum. It's a different era now. it's all about singles, not complete albums now days.

I have no problem giving Perry credit for songs he wrote and shows he did. Absolutely NONE. I saw a lot of Journey shows and loved them. The guy did his job. But for people to slam the band now because it's no longer 1983 is ridiculous. There obviously IS demand there, or they wouldn't go. Whether that means "Fans" or "Dollars" doesn't matter. Someone is paying for them to go there. They wouldn't do it for free and they wouldn't do it unless there was money to be made. The fact is, very FEW bands from that era can do the business that you're asking for. U2, but they're not the same type of band. Neither is Springsteen. To compare today's Journey numbers to yesterday's Journey numbers is completely ignoring the fact that time has moved on. If it hadn't, then John Waite would have a number one tune according to some here. As for DSB, I don't like the GLEE version of it. It's a great song yet a personal thorn in my side for other reasons. It's a great song. Perry WAS a great singer. I have ZERO problem acknowledging that. Just because he WAS doesn't mean I want to read about his first teenage kiss these days. The fact is, he's no longer relevant. That's his own doing and he likes it that way. Too bad. There's nobody that wouldn't like to see him prove the skeptics wrong. Even Pineda would I'm sure. The fact is, to just completely dog the guy for kicking ass and doing the job just gets to me. But the band, time, and Perry have moved on.

Deano, talking about the Brazilian case, I think it's more beacuse the catalog than the Arnel story. DSB, Who's Crying Now and Open Arms are familiar to many people. These songs still play in the adult's radio stations here.
Only the fans or the people that have Cable TV knows Arnel's story. To give you an example, Revelation wasn't released in Brazil.

Don't necessarily agree with the "dregs" comment a few posts earlier. I would say the only time they were the dregs were when there was no Journey. They may not have played as many huge venues or toured as much worldwide, but there also wasn't Arnel's story and DSB being played everywhere, all the time. I doubt their bank accounts suffered much during the Augeri era or Soto's brief tenure. I think it's mostly a matter of the exposure DSB has given them ever since the Sopranos finale. My guess/opinion, is if they had similar exposure sooner or during other periods post-Perry, regardless to who the singer was [Augeri's vocal issues aside], much of the same thing likely would have happened because the band would have been thrust back into the spotlight like they were a couple years back. That didn't happen, but now you have the exposure with DSB + their ability to ride the Arnel rags to riches story all at the same time, and you have a media windfall... tons of exposure, new opportunities, and lots of $$$$. The only question I think a lot of us who are more casual fans of the band, but enjoy this board is... will the new album have the chance to be as successful as Revelation if there isn't the media storm surrounding it?

More proof that it's going to be extremely difficult for a single disc new release by Journey to outsell the double disc release of Revelation.
On a side note, Digital Singles are still going strong.

Cake Scores Lowest-Selling No. 1 Album in SoundScan History

Sales at the top of the Billboard 200 continue to slide, as the No. 1-debuting set -- from a rather unlikely band -- sold 44,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Meanwhile, Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me" makes a sizzling debut atop the Digital Songs chart with 411,000 sold.

Cake's "Showroom of Compassion" bows atop the Billboard 200 with just 44,000. That's not only the smallest frame for a No. 1 album since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991 ( beating a record set only last week), but it's also obviously the tiniest figure racked up by a No. 1-debuting album.

Who would have thought that Cake -- a band that many may only remember for its 1998 No. 1 Alternative Songs hit, "Never There" -- would notch not just its first top 10 album in 2011, but also its first No. 1?

Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Jan. 16) totaled 4.9 million units, down 11% compared with the sum last week (5.4 million) and down 15% compared with the comparable sales week of 2010 (5.7 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 10.3 million, an 11% drop compared with the same total at this point last year (11.6 million).[/u]

I know how to get guaranteed sales for the new disc...go on the Stern show. Yup, for real. Back a few years, I asked Schon if he would like to go and he said yes, but he knew Sterm would ask him of the lipping so they couldn't. Now though, I think Howard wouldn't ask them about that and he would focus on the Pineda story and the fact that Journey is doing alright nowadays. Howard likes Journey, just hates SP. Fred loves Neal. Remember, the Stern show now reaches 25 million listeners, and is replayed all week long. He has a studio where bands can play live...Journey can certainly do that well. I think it's a no brainer. Go on Stern and you sell an extra 200K discs.

Leno, Letterman, Fallon, Kimmel and Conan...plus I think they should do a Soundstage as well.

Stern had an incident a few years back where he got blacklisted by the Filipinos because he was talking about how they sell their daughters to Japan and other countries for sex. Would be interesting to see how it would go down now with Arnel in his studio.

Either way, the stats don't lie and Album sales are in the tank. Singles are where it is at. The new album would have to sell a real 1.6 million, not 800k to equal Revelation's RIAA totals. A tough task. The first week might be big but it's not how you start, it's how you finish. The Manila DVD debuted at #1 but isn't even certified Gold after one year. When Bon Jovi and U2 can't even hit multi-platinum, you know times are tough in the Rock world.
