I agree, I quite liked that. One of the few times he hasn't tried to oversing, which is good cuz, his high end rock vocals wouldn't have suited it. But I don't think he let himself get up into the stratosphere like he can, even once in that. Dug the Evolution class T and black tails too.

Yeah, people that aren't on the Glee side of the fence are saying not bad, but also are saying enough with this song already. James may very well have peeled the last piece of tread off of this tune.
Notice the crowd wasn't really exploding on the introduction like has been seen before.

James wore the TAILS....and Randy said he paid homage to the One of the BEST voices in Rock....Steve Perry.
James did it justice! Good on him!
The comments coming in are 50/50, some alluding to this song being over done already and on the other side, Glee fans are giving James a bit of a bashing for his rendition.
God, is the Glee cover now the definitive version of the song?
Could this be the straw that finally break's this song's back?

I've never actually really listened to the Glee version - I just think James did it justice - wasn't great but he did seem to hit the notes quite easily and didn't do his signature screech at any point (thankfully).
I thought Haley sucked on her song - that growling- on a MJ song?

I can't believe someone FINALLY agrees with me on this! For FUCK's sake people... he is NOT a good singer! What qualities other than his vocal range (and being an Adam Lambert wannabe) do you like? He sucks ASS!He screams at the end of EVERY song, and has zero decent qualities to his voice. He has non-existent shitty vibrato, no decent tone, and no texture to his voice. He wouldn't even be qualified to hold Lambert's sweat rag, and I can't even STAND Lambert!
WTF do people get out of his vocals?I seriously don't get it.

I think James has a good voice, but I do agree that Adam is a better singer and delivers his vocals much better, and has a much better stage presence too. Clip my friend took at a show last year, have a listen..... Sleepwalker ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-mtlmlgB7I

Exactly what was Randy propping there?
All that will do is get GH a couple more million sales but doesn't help the current band, at least not
Deen and AP.

Durbin has [supposedly] crafted a "mind-blowing" version of the 1981 classic.
Depending how James does, this could be the moment where Fonzie jumps the shark and crashes into a barrel of flammable liquid which ignites and leaves him scarred for life.

Actually Randy gave high props to both Perry and Journey. He called Journey one of the best bands ever and called Perry one of the best singers ever. It was very cool to hear people who are veterans in the music biz and who are highly respected by many to speak so highly of Journey as all 3 of them did.

That's all well and good and Randy always says he loves the Journey boys..BUT Steve Perry hasn't sang a fucking note publicly or been a part of this band since '98. Steve Perry WAS one of the best singers ever, past tense.

Randy Jackson has every right to give props to Steve Perry in this respect, because outside of the musicianship of Schon and Cain, Perry is a huge reason why songs like Don't Stop Believing are as timeless as they are. Some of you guys want to sweep the band's successful past under the carpet because you want so much for this version of the band to outshine anything it has accomplished prior to AP. Sure, you have every right to wish such. But no matter how successful this version of Journey will be, they will never be able to escape their past success. Their catalog is who they are and who all fans and acquaintances of the band know them by. Like or not, that is the stone cold fact. James gave homage to not only Journey, but Steve Perry by wearing Perry's trademark tux jacket with the tails, so it's only fitting for Randy to have made the comments he made. Whether if you like Steve Perry or hate him, you should all feel some sort of pride knowing that this band has had a lot of positive exposure in the past several years, and there are probably a lot more fans of this band because of that exposure than what would have been if the band remained in some obscure setting. In all fairness, outside of the hardcore group of Journey fans, not many really know who Arnel Pineda is. The same could be said for Steve Augeri and certainly Jeff Scott Soto. It has nothing to do with any of them as human beings nor their vocal abilities, but the fact that when it's all said and done, the early 80's line-up will always be the one remembered.
With all of that said, I thought James pretty much just tried to make the song his own. I didn't care for his vocals because he doesn't have the voice for a Journey song such as that. Only thing I disagree with Andrew on is that singing any other Journey song would not have helped his chances, since for one thing...that night was about the contestants picking songs that inspired them, and two, the American Idol judges do not like their contestants singing songs that may be considered obscure or not popular enough with the American Idol crowd.
