I don't get what the stink is all about. South Detroit doesn't exist, but DSB still rocks. Oh and by the way, "any way you want it, that's the way you need it" it's hardly a Christian (or Muslim, or, what have you) value either, but I've never heard anyone's religious sensibilities offended by that song before! The point is, you don't have to give up your religious views, just to hear someone else singing about a view different than yours. It's still only rock n roll, if you like it or don't.

Did anyone hear the Underwood song "Jesus take the wheel" *shudder* I'm not even Christian, but that's a great song, and my faith has not been damaged from liking it.

She's a country singer, we expect to get a little god there....and a pickup...and a shotgun, coon dog, cheatin' heart, etc.

Whoa. None of this had anything to do with me being offended or any religious views I may have. Not at all. I was simply pointing out that it's a silly thing to pray to multiple Gods. Worthless. And this idea that somehow it's noble to pray to multiple Gods is counter-productive to finding true religion. I am not a particularly religious person, but if I were I'd figure out what the hell I believe in and commit to it and if I couldn't, I'd know that praying to multiple Gods would only highlight my lack of faith in whatever one true God may be out there. It's a nice artistic thought, but not a very spiritual one.

Well, I'm not sure where you're getting that take from. To me it sounds like praying to "what's his name" meaning, people call God lots of different names, and I don't know which name you go by, but I'm talking to you.

T.

That's my whole point. If you look at God and say "I don't know which name you go by", then you obviously have no faith in whatever it is He is. Any God would want to be addressed by name with full faith. Just my point of view and really the point of view expressed in probably all rules and regulation documents (e.g. The Bible). :)

South Detroit is not supposed to be the name of the city. It's an AREA of the city. I can't believe people don't realize that when they hear that song. I just asked my wife about this and she said "They're just talking about the south part of Detroit." This cracks me up whenever I hear people talk about it.

LMFAO! Why is arguably the worst song on this disc being taken so seriously!
Oops! Hope I don't go to hell for saying that!

Or you're just being honest! Let's define "faith," when it comes to religion, shall we? Pretty much believing in something or someone when every bit of logic, history and sanity says otherwise. To pretend you know what's impossible to know seems far worse than prefacing your thoughts with the admittance that you don't know. To Whom It May Concern isn't lyrical genius, but it makes fucking sense. Great song and thought provoking lyrics.

Right! Plus, if you look at God at all, to say anything, you have faith or hope that something is there, or you'd not have taken that action.

Which people? People like Steve Perry? There is an interesting interview somewhere on the web, possibly on wolfgang's vault, where Perry talks about that lyric in the song and how he knew it was a faux pas, but that it just worked musically.

Really, really, really hate this song.

I like the chorus, but the rest of the song drives me absolutely nuts. The guitar part sounds out of place and like it belongs in every other post-Perry, we're writing this song to be played at weddings across the universe, ballad and the lyrics of the verses are beyond goofy.

This one and Tantra get skipped almost every time I play the album.

Well, the lyrics simply echo the very essence of the supposed Hindu concept...

Wikipedia wrote:When we think of the Hindu religion, unlike other religions in the world, the Hindu religion does not claim any one prophet; it does not worship any one god; it does not subscribe to any one dogma; it does not believe in any one philosophic concept; it does not follow any one set of religious rites or performances; in fact, it does not appear to satisfy the narrow traditional features of any religion or creed. It may broadly be described as a way of life and nothing more.

Thus some scholars argue that the Hinduism is not a religion per se but rather a reification of a diverse set of traditions and practices by scholars who constituted a unified system and arbitrarily labeled it Hinduism.

Perry's an idiot in that respect then. Anyone with a brain can figure out the song is talking about the southern part of Detroit, even if the writers weren't thinking that when they wrote it.

He said it was a faux pas because Detroiters know that one travels south
to cross the Canadian border and Detroit runs east/west ...Perry
was referring to the south part of Detroit, not a city named South Detroit ... :?
You are correct, Dave and SP, there is a south part of Detroit, one couldn't cross the
border if one didn't go there...
